Paths: A Killers Novel, Book 2 (The Killers) by Brynne Asher (23)

Chapter 22 One, Two, Three, and Four

Grady

Once the plane lands, I hurry her to my Escalade while making sure no one follows us.  I dont think theyll try to make another move so soon, but you never know.

I checked her eyes two more times on the plane for signs of a concussion.  Shes got swelling on her cheek thats sure to bruise and the scratches are starting to scab.  Her pupils arent dilated, she hasnt fallen asleep or been sickbut Im not taking any chances, so I tell her Im taking her straight to a doctor to get checked out.

This is when we have our first argument.  It isnt ridiculous banter about food or Christmas trees, either.  Its a hands-down, lay-your-shit-out disagreement.

She insists shes fine.

I tell her shes going to the doctorend of discussion.  Shes not the one looking at her face with a constant reminder of what just happened.  She even admits to having a slight headache.

She retorts that anyone who skidded across a tarmac on their face would have a headache, and again, repeats that shes fine.

I tell her she doesnt have a choicewere going.

She says Ill have to wrestle her out of the car and that would just be embarrassing, because she isnt going andfucking againsays shes fine.

I ignore her, insisting she go.

Then she explains in a high-pitched tone that shes the only health care professional in this vehicle and if she gets sick, shell go.  She even goes so far as to add in a sarcastic tone that shell be sure to throw up all over me so I dont miss it.

I start my car, and as we leave the parking lot, put my foot down.  Shes going to see a doctor.

As I pull onto the highway to find the nearest emergency clinic, her voice fills the car, but this time its small and shaky.

Please, Grady, she starts, and when I look over, her eyes are filled with tears.  Damn it.  That, mixed with seeing her beautiful face marred, is enough to gut me all over again.  I just want to go home after all thats happened.  I promise Ill tell you if I dont feel good.  Please.

I sigh and turn back to focus on the highway.  Reaching over, I take her hand and, fuck me, I agree.  Seeing tears in her eyes nearly does me in.

This doesnt bode well for me.

But I try to save face and tell her Ill only take her home if she takes a couple more days off work to make sure shes okay.

Surprisingly, she doesnt argue.  Im out of pawns to negotiate with, so Im relieved she gives in.  Plus, theres no way I was going to let her go to work anyway, so it saves me another argument.

The rest of the car ride is quiet, but when my phone rings and I see that its Crew, my stomach tightens, wondering what it could be now.

I dont put it on speaker, just in case.  Yeah?

Hey, I know youve had a busy day already, and trust me, I wouldnt bother you for anything else, but if I were you Id want a warning.  Ive known Crew for more than ten years.  I probably know him better than anyone, so I can tell by his tone of voice, this isnt an emergency.  If anything, he sounds amused.

Okay, I drawl, waiting for him to finish.

I was in the middle of a training session with the men, and then, boomit was like a tornado hit.

What are you talking about? I growl and feel Maya squeeze my arm.

When I look over, her face is as confused as I feel.

Well.  I hear him move the phone and muffle a laugh.  Lets just say the Cain Quartet rolled into town and now my old farmhouse looks like Rudolph threw up all over the place.

What the fuck?  I feel my face fall as Mayas expression turns from confused to concerned.

Ive been putting my sisters off for months, even more since I was captured and fucked-up.  I didnt need them to see me that way.  They know my job as a contractor could be dangerous and I told them Id had an incident, but was fine.  They dont know the truth about my prior job.

I guess I put them off long enough, they made a surprise attack.  Damn them.

Yeah, you heard me.  They said they were tired of you giving them the runaround, so they came to you.  Did they ever.  I wouldnt believe it if I hadnt seen it with my own eyes.  There was no way I could stop them, and man, theyve only been here for thirty minutes.  Theyre a force to be reckoned with.

I look back to the road, but slow down.  I was in a hurry to get her home, but now Im wondering if we can get back on the plane and head for Fiji.  I can keep her safe in Fiji, not to mention, we can fuck on the beach.

Just when my thoughts go to how many ways we can fuck on a private island, Crew keeps talking.  Tell me youre close.  Theyre talking my fucking ear off and I left the men with Asa.  Ive carried in all their shit and eaten enough Christmas cookies to get me through Independence Day.  I think Id rather go to the depths of hell for you again than entertain them.

I shake my head and turn onto the two-lane road that leads us home.  Ive decided to take Maya to Fiji.

Fuck you, Crew clips.

Ill see you in five, I concede and we hang up.

Whats wrong now? Maya asks.

I feel bad, I start, trying to break the news that well be bombarded the second we get home.  I had no idea they were coming, but theyre crazy and can do shit like this from time to time.  I know its really a bad time after last night and today.  I wanted to bring you home to peace and quiet, not to the whirlwind were about to walk into.

Grady, what are you talking about?

My sisters.  I look over at her.  Theyre here.  They like this spur-of-the-moment shit.  Im sorry, baby, but from the sounds of it, therell be no peace and quiet today.

Her hand comes to her face and she instantly pulls down the mirror on the visor to inspect her scrapes.

Hey, I call for her.  Theyre a pain in the ass, but only the good kind.  Theyll love you so much, itll make you sick to your stomach.  But still, if you throw up on me, dont think you can blame it purely on my sisters.  Youre going to the doctor to get checked for a concussion.

Im a mess, she says into the mirror.  I cant believe I have to meet them looking like this.  Can you just take me home?  Ill meet them next time.

I shake my head as I pull onto the road that leads to Crews house.  Sorry, baby.  I need to get my sisters off Crews back and Im not letting you out of my sight.

She flips the mirror closed, giving up.  Its useless anyway.  Who knows when my face will heal.

Its not deep.  It should heal soon.  I look over at her and raise a brow.  But I shouldnt have to tell you that.  You are the health care professional here, right?

She closes her eyes.  Shut up.

I pull slowly up to the house, park next to a brand-new minivan with temporary tags and add, Warningtheyll attack you with the energy of a pack of puppies who just downed a double espresso.  And since its Christmas, they could be on a sugar high.  Just go with the flow, I promise youll make it out alive.

Her eyes get big right before I hear them and look toward the house.

Maya

When the door bursts open, I get the feeling Grady wasnt exaggerating.  Four women come filing outone in a flat-out run, one skip-running, and the other two at a quick clip.

When Grady opens his door, I hear excited screams and shouts from the women, but I stay where I am.  I know I cant hide in Gradys SUV forever, but for now, I feel safer in here.

All four women have darkish hair similar to Gradys.  They all have his coloring, especially the most enthusiastic one running to him.  Even from here, I see she has the same vibrant blue eyes Ive been falling for.

Shorter than me, shes petite.  When she gets close to Grady, she jumps, leaping into his arms where he catches her, leaving her feet dangling at least six inches off the ground.  She wiggles from side to side, excited to see her big brother.

But I barely have a moment to appreciate her love for Grady when the other three reach him.  At least they dont run and jump, but they do attack him.  Its like hes turned into a huge tree smothered in vines.

Its honestly one of the sweetest things Ive ever witnessed.  I know Im the same way with Joe, but to see Grady being loved on by his family, especially after I learned their parents are gone, makes it even sweeter.

They finally give him some breathing room, breaking away even though they all seem to be talking a mile a minute.  But just when I think Im safe, tucked away in Gradys big SUV, one of the sisters looks over and catches my eye.

I cant help but tense when she doesnt look away.  Im not a professional lip-reader, but its easy to see she just asked who I was as she gestured to where Im hiding.  When they all look over, I give them a half-smile with a little wave.  Grady gazes straight into my eyes, and his smile is bigger when he lifts a hand, crooking a finger for me to come to him.

Well, Id look like a freak if I just sat here, but none of my mothers incessant lessons in composure taught me how to meet the family of the man Im sleeping with when my face is scraped, swollen, and starting to bruise.  Its not like I can simply explain that my ex-fiancé and his mob family are after me and my face skidded across the tarmac of a runway.  They obviously love Grady, theyre going to want more for him than some woman with baggage so big and heavy, it requires an eighteen-wheeler to haul it around.

But the longer I sit here, the longer theyll stare, and the weirder theyll think I am.

I finally reach for my door handle and climb down from my seat.  The second I start toward the Cain huddle, Grady breaks away from his sisters and moves to me.  I instantly feel at ease when he reaches for my hand and pulls me to his side with his arm around my shoulders.

He turns me to our captive audience and announces, This is Maya Augustine.  Maya, these are my sisters.

I open my mouth to greet them, but its like I never had a chance.  They prove just what I thoughttheir interest in the woman standing with their brother is off the charts.

Youre dating someone?

No wonder he wont return our calls.

Obviously, hes been busy.

Look how cute they are.

How long have you been together?

Youre the most hypocritical man ever.  You demand to know everything about us, and you didnt tell us you have a girlfriend?

I mean look, with her blonde hair against his dark complexion?  Theyre soooo cute.

I agree.

I bet theyve been together a long time, its why he hasnt come to visit.  Hes been relationship-busy.

But hes never been in a real relationship.

Thats why hes been so busyhe doesnt know what hes doing.

What happened to your face?

Seriously, Grace?  You need a filter.

Sorry.  But really, what happened to your face?

Holy shit, the way they talk, I doubt they ever need anyone to answer.  Im usually good with people, but really, its four versus one.  Im not sure what to say, who to answer first, or how to lie about my face.

Gradys arm tightens around my shoulders and he tucks my front to his side. I try not to look pained when I offer a little wave accompanied with a lame, Hey.

What the hell? the tallest of the Cain sisters screams, staring at my hand.  Youre engaged?

I quickly pull my hand back, but Grady catches it in his.

Okay, Grady starts in a voice that sounds practiced and clearly demands attention.  I shouldve told you about Maya.  But fuck, have you all ever heard of an invitation?  Or at least a phone call to warn me of this shit?

No, and no.  The woman with blonde highlights steps forward and juts her hand out.  At first I thought she wanted to shake mine, that is, until she rips my left hand out of Gradys to inspect my ring.  Its huge.  And beautiful.  And huge.  She looks up at her brother and smiles.  To think you did this without our help.  Im proud of you.  Looking back to me, she adds, Im Peyton, number two.

Overcome by everything really, all I can think to do is question, Number two?

Yeah, sister number two, she confirms.  She waves her hand toward another sister, the one with shoulder length dark hair and a fuller face.  Raine thinks shes special since shes number one.  She flips out her other hand to the side toward the younger ones and continues, Holly is number three and Gracie is four.

Hollys the one who announced how cute Grady and I are, and Grace was the one who jumped into her brothers arms.

Its hard not to be overwhelmed but I am.

I open my mouth again to properly greet them when Grace hits Gradys arm and exclaims, Youre getting married and didnt tell us?  Wait.  Youre not already married, are you?

No, I respond quickly.  Were not married.  Were, I pause to collect my thoughts so I dont ramble.  He gave me a ring just last night, in fact.  So, it wasnt that he didnt tell you, there just hasnt been time.  He did tell me about you all, though.  But, ah, not enough.  Still, he wasnt keeping anything from you.  Its just been a busy…” I think about it, not wanting to admit its only been weeks, although Grady would insist its more like months, time.

You just got engaged last night? Holly exclaims and grabs my hand, dislodging me from Grady.  She pulls me into a huge hug.  Congratulations!

Well, it seems we got here just in time, Peyton says, with a hint of sarcasm.  Who knows how long it wouldve taken Grady to call us.  They probably wouldve been pregnant before we heard from him.

Holly just releases me when these words float through the air, making me gasp.

Its cold.  Grady changes the subject and puts a hand to the small of my back, giving me a push.  Can we take this inside?  Im about to take a step through the gaggle of sisters when Grady stops and states, You look funny.  Whats wrong with you?

When I look back, his arms are crossed, and hes glaring at Raine, sister number one.

Raine smiles big, her shoulders rise, and her arms come out to her sides.  I was going to wait to tell you, but its hard to keep it a secret anymore.  Im pregnant!

I start to smile at her news until I hear Grady growl, What the fuck?

When I look up to him, he doesnt appear happy about becoming an uncle, even if Raine seems overly happy about her announcement.

Raine rolls her eyes.  Would you stop?  Im marriedget over it.

Really confused now, I look back to Grady and hes closing his eyes and shakes his head.

Honestly.  I dont know when Ive ever been more confused.

Sisters one, two, three, and four dont seem a bit phased by Gradys unhappiness about number one being with child, and they all turn toward the house, but not before Grace threads her arm through mine and pulls me with her.

When I look over, she leans into me as if shes telling a secret, but in the same boisterous voice only the Cain sisters have managed to perfect, says, Dont mind him.  Raines hubby, Alex, is the bomb.  Grady knows it down deep, and even paid for their wedding, but he only did it because he loves Raine, and the whole time he grumbled about poor Alex.  I mean, Alex is an accountant, and a good one.  He does all our taxes.  Its convenient.  Grady just refuses to believe any of us have sex.  She turns around and gives her older brother a glare when we reach the front door.

I dont have a chance to turn to see Gradys expression, because the next moment, Raine opens the front door and Christmas music is blaring from inside the house.

Grace doesnt miss a beat.  Come on, Crew told us about the vineyard next door.  Were going to do a tasting and youre coming with us.  She looks straight into my eyes and is as serious as serious can be when she demands, And youre going to tell us all what happened to your face.

I let out a little puff of air and look over at the man whose ring Im wearing, whose baby I could be pregnant with, and whose sisters just ran roughshod all over us.  I widen my eyes and silently plea for help.

And damn him, what does he do?

He leans down and kisses me.

Then I hear catcalls through the Christmas music.

What.  The.  Hell?

Weston MacLachlan

Somewhere outside of Buffalo

I see him.  Hes standing with Jeff and my dad.  Trevor is off to the side with his arms crossed and looking intently at the scene in front of him.

I look back to Byron.  Hes got an enormous knot on the side of his head where hes holding ice.  Besides that, I dont see any other injuries, but I wouldnt because Im not looking for them, and Im not looking because I dont give a fuck.

They all watch me as I approach, but I dont stop.  When I get close enough, I put my hands to his chest and shove with all my might.  You went after my woman?

Byron goes reeling, landing on his ass first before falling to his back.

I sense someone at my side and I hold my hand out to stop them before looking to my dad.  Do not fucking tell me you ordered that to happen.  Do not tell me you ordered him to go after her.

My dads face tightens and he looks to Byron, whos slowly pulling himself up from the ground.  I did not.

Byron looks worse for the wear, but even so, he looks straight at me and yells, It needed to be done and you never talk to your Lieutenant that way!  Youre a fucking mess and not held to the same rules because youre a daddys boy.  He takes another couple steps toward me and puts a finger in my face.  Youre a soldier.  Dont ever question anything I do.

I couldnt give a shit who the fuck he is or if Im supposed to answer to him.  He made a move on Maya.  I know Ive gotta find a way to get her back and Im in the process of making that happen.  Nothing in my life has made me crazier than seeing her with him.  That wont last for long, though.

But Byron going after her on his own?  No one fucking does that without answering to me.  I dont give a shit who he is.

Did you hurt her?  I counter, hitting his hand out of my face and taking a step to get into his.  I stay where I am, but turn to look at Trevor and demand, Did you?

Trevors eyes shoot to me and his face tightens.  His chest is rising and falling, but I dont give a fuck.  I can tell by the look in his eyes something happened.

I pull my gun out of the back of my pants, point it at Trevor, and shout, Fucking answer me.  Did you hurt her?

Weston! my dad bellows at the same time Jeff yells, Stand down!

But I dont take my eyes off Trevor.  His hands come out, palms up as he lowers his voice, even though it holds steady.  I took my order and did what I was told.  I tried to be careful, but there was a scuffle.  Other than some scrapes, she looked fine.

Put the gun down.  Thats an order, Jeff warns again.

I dont give a shit if he was trying to be careful, I barely move my gun a centimeter and squeeze the trigger.  Trevor falls to the ground, but not because I hit him.

What the fuck? he yells from the ground where he fell for cover, and scrambles back to his feet.

Weston! my dad growls.

Thats a warning, I seethe, glaring straight into Trevors eyes.  If Maya ever gets so much as a scratch on her again and youre involved, youre dead.

Only because hes a recruit and I know he was taking an order from my shithead Lieutenant, do I take a step back and swing my arm around to Byron.

Weston!  I barely hear Jeff yell for the rage ringing in my ears.

Whatre you gonna do, pretty boy? Byron eggs me on.  Youll pay for this.  Youre a soldier, nothing more.  Dont forget you report to me.  You dont take a stand against your superior.  Ever.  I dont give a fuck what your last name is.

I lower my voice and look at him through the sight of my 9mm.  You hurt whats mine.  No one goes after whats mine.  Ill get her back, but in my own way.

She knows about us.  It was necessary, shes a liabili—”

Without moving my gun, I shout, No one calls her a liability!

Put the fucking gun down, Jeff demands.

Weston, my dad calls for me.

I ignore them both.

Ill get her back on my own and get rid of that other guy in the process, I inform Byron.  Dont ever think about her again.  Shed better not even enter your fucking brain.

Byron takes a step and narrows his eyes.  Ill do what I need to do for this family.  Liabilities are eliminated, and shes a fucking liabil—”

Thats when I pull the trigger.

All I hear is the gunshot ringing through the abandoned warehouse as he hits the floor.  I dont hear the commotion, the yelling, or the men running to Byron where hes starting to bleed, lying on the cold concrete.  Thats when his eyes roll back in his head.

I know hes dead.  Thats what he gets for going after Maya.

Fuck! Jeff yells and turns to my dad.  What are you going to do about this?

No one fucking touches her, I warn and turn my gun on the rest of the group, including my father.  I look to Trevor, who doesnt take his eyes off me.  The only reason you arent dead, too, is because I know you were taking an order.  His chest heaves, even though hes standing stock-still.  I look back to the rest of them.  Ill get her back and that asshole who took her from me will pay.  But no one makes a move on Maya Augustine.  Ever.

I dont give a shit about Byron, Ive always hated him and now hes out of the way.  I walk backwards, not taking my eyes off them when my dad calls for me, Weston, stop.

As soon as my back clears the door, I turn and move.  Its time to bring Maya home and take care of that asshole who took her from me for good.  I shoot two tires on every car but mine.

I have a task.

Fuck the consequences.  All I can think about is her.
