Scorch (The Blackthorn Brothers #4) by Cali MacKay (23)

I bit Avery’s neck as I pinned her against the hard steel of my car, pounding each thrust into her, my hand slipping down to her sweet cunt to stroke her swollen clit. I tried to fight back the energy building inside me, but Avery was making my head spin, and she felt so fucking good as her body squeezed tight around my cock, her hips pushing back to take me deeper and quicken our pace.

Her hands splayed out against the side of my car as she braced herself, her needy moans breaking the quiet of the forest. “I’m so close, Dane. Harder...”

With my mouth catching hers in a plundering kiss, I held nothing back, our pace brutal. And that was all it took to have her crying out as she came, her body quivering in my arms, as I finally let loose the orgasm I’d been desperately holding back. With my heart pounding and my breathing heavy, I emptied into her, my cock pulsing deep inside her as I filled her with my cum, even as my thoughts strayed to her getting pregnant.

Truth be told, I’d like nothing more than to start a family with her. It’d always been there in the background when we were together, even if, at the time, it seemed like an impossibility, given my life’s complications. And now? Things may not be all that different at the moment, but once I’d rid myself of Stubbs, I swore, I’d make sure to provide a safe and happy life for any child we brought into the world.

Not that I had discussed any of this with Avery—at least not recently. But we’d yet to use protection, and though it left me wondering if she was on the Pill, I was hoping she wasn’t. I wanted her to be the mother of my children—and I wanted her to be my wife.

I kissed her cheek and pulled out of her, my heart never slowing much when she was around. “I fucking love you, baby girl.”

She pulled her jeans up, and then went up onto the tips of her toes to kiss me. “You’re a persistent man, Blackthorn. I’ll give you that.”

“If you want to gather up some kindling and firewood, I’ll get the tent set up.” It wouldn’t take long at all, even if I was putting it up myself.

And it truly didn’t. By the time she dumped the first armful of branches, I was nearly done, and by the second armful, not only was the tent set up, but I had the air mattress inflated and set up, and had cleared away a spot to start a fire. I went through the pile and picked out the driest of the branches, quickly stacking them and strategically placing the kindling before setting the bundle alight.

“Such a Boy Scout.” She gave me a teasing smile as I stood up and pulled her to me, my mouth hard on hers in a kiss, her tongue clashing with mine, as I debated dragging her off to the tent or taking her again right there in the open.

I groaned, forcing myself to break from our kiss, though I still held her close, my head bent to hers. “You make me crazy, Rae. You make it so I can barely think of anything beyond fucking you.”

Her brow furrowed, and for a moment, despite her good mood just moments earlier, she looked worried. “Promise me that no matter what happens, you won’t leave me, Dane. I don’t know if I could survive losing you again, without losing my heart for good the next time around. I swear, I won’t recover from it.”

“You have my word, I’m not going anywhere. I’m not fucking leaving you, Avery.” Yet, somehow...it felt like that wasn’t the only thing bothering her. “What’s going on, baby...talk to me. If there’s something bothering you...just tell me what’s going on. You know you can talk to me.”

She took a breath, as if ready to say something, but then it was like the words stuck in her throat, and then she tried to mask it all behind a smile. “It’s nothing. I just hope you brought supplies to make s’mores.”

I wasn’t buying her cover-up. Not for a minute, though I refused to let my mind wander back down a path that led to her with my brother. No fucking way. So I let it go for now and managed a charming smile of my own. “I’ve got marshmallows and chocolate, but I didn’t have any graham crackers at the house, so I improvised with chocolate chip cookies. Hope that isn’t too big a disappointment.” Not that it could be when chocolate chip cookies were her favorite.

“Are you kidding? That’s even better.” This time, her smile actually reached her intelligent brown eyes, setting them alight, as she slipped her arms around my neck. “I knew there was a reason I fell in love with you.”

My heart thundered against my chest each time I heard her say it, especially when I thought I’d lost her for good. But now that she was back in my life, there was no way I was going to fuck this up.

I tipped her chin up and stole a kiss, even though I knew I’d never get my fill. “Come on then... S’mores first, and then—”

“Then you’ll ravage me again?” She flicked her eyebrows up teasingly as I couldn’t help but laugh.

“How could I ever say no to you, baby girl?”
