Chapter 1 – Drew

Zack grumbled something I couldn't quite make out. When I looked over at him across the small apartment, he was sitting cross legged on the couch, glaring at his laptop like it had kicked a puppy. For a moment, I just leaned against the kitchen counter and watched him with an eyebrow raised.

When he started grumbling at it again, I spoke up. "What's wrong this time? Someone screw with your code again?" Zack worked as a computer programmer and spent many nights and days growling at his computer when something wasn't working the way it was supposed to. But I hadn't thought he had anything to work on tonight, hence the confusion about what was bugging him.

"No, not this time." Zack sighed and leaned back against the couch. He closed his eyes and started massaging his temple with his right hand. "This trip to Texas is going to end up costing us a small fortune. Between the flight, the hotel, and food, we're basically looking at all of our savings going bye bye."

Ah, so that's what he'd been doing for the last hour and a half. Planning for the wedding. "Well, if we don't go, Josh is liable to drive out here just to murder the both of us. There's no way we can just blow off his wedding. You only get married once. At least, I hope he only gets married once."

Zack sat up straight. Then he looked over at me and grinned. His eyes sparkled, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to know what genius idea he'd come up with this time. Usually that look meant we were in for some big-time trouble. Like that time him, Josh, and I had all snuck out and TP'd Principal Collin's house sophomore year. Or junior year when he'd decided to do a cannon ball into his pool from his roof.

Whatever Zack was planning, there was bound to be some chaos involved.

"Why don't we drive out instead of flying? Most of the cost is coming from the flight. It'd save each of us a chunk of change since we could split the gas out there."

The way Zack looked at me, I knew he'd already made up his mind. And with the way he put it, driving out there would make more sense financially. There was no way I was going to miss Josh and Carla's wedding, but I really didn't want to completely drain my savings account just to go. I'd already had to put out a pretty penny when I'd blown a tire two weeks ago.

So, with a sigh, I nodded. "Okay, I guess we could do that. How long is it going to take to get out there?"

Zack frowned and turned back to his computer. He had his tongue between his lips, his patented look when he was thinking about something. Girls always thought it was cute, I just thought it made him look like he was still six. After a bit of typing, he looked back up at me. "About twenty-three hours, if we got the way Google Maps suggests. We'd have plenty of places we could stop on the way, too, without being in the middle of Bumfuck."

Well, that didn't sound too bad. If we broke it up over a couple days and split the driving, we could do that easily, especially if there were decent places to stop each night on the way out there. And it would certainly beat the headache of going through airport security and dealing with layovers and all the other bullshit that always accompanied flying. Sure, it'd take longer, but it'd been a while since we'd had more than a weekend vacation.

Between being able to work remote and our actual vacation days, we could do it with no issues.

So, why the hell not?

"Okay, let's drive then," I said, smiling at him. For once, he'd had a “genius idea” that was actually pretty genius. And most likely wouldn't land one of us in the hospital or jail.

Hopefully.

I went over and joined Zack on the couch as we decided on the details for our trip. Did we want to rent a car or drive one of ours? Did we want to stop along the way or just drive straight through? Did we want to do anything else while we were out in Texas, with full access to a car at any time? There were a million questions that we had to find answers to. And with the wedding coming up soon, we needed to hammer out all the details now.

We decided to take Zack's car, since it was newer and renting one wouldn't be much cheaper than flying out, especially once we factored in gas and insurance. We'd take a couple days to make the drive, stopping to see some sights along the way, maybe find a girl or two to help make the nights a bit more fun. We also had a list of bars and breweries in the area that we planned on hitting.

Josh was the one getting married and settling down -- not us.

We figured we might as well spend as much time drinking and having fun as God allowed us! The daily grind didn’t appeal to either one of us much. Rather, we preferred to vary things up as frequently as possible. It certainly made life a lot more fun!

I still hadn't figured out why Josh wanted to settle down. Sure, Carla was great and all, but why limit yourself to one girl for the rest of your life? Tying yourself down and taking on all the responsibility and pressure of a wife just sounded like a drag.

But hey, it was his life. If that was what he wanted, then Zack and I would support him. We'd just do it in our own manner. In this case, that meant a cross country road trip with the goal of partying and getting as wild as we could manage. It was a good thing both of us had jobs that would let us work remote for a while. That meant we could enjoy ourselves and take our time, rather than trying to rush there and back.

Oh yeah, this was going to be quite the trip.

"Don't forget to see what bars are near the hotels we'll be staying at during the drive out there," I reminded him. Going out and hitting the local scenes would probably give us better chances of a good time than just hanging out at the hotel bar. Not that I was going to discount that as an option, but I wanted to be prepared.

Zack nodded and grinned, opening another search window. "Maybe if we're lucky we can have some real fun! Find a babe and tag team her. Or two babes and swap! Just think of all the possibilities we'll have!"

I couldn't help but laugh. It certainly wouldn't be the first time we'd had a threesome or a foursome or a fivesome. There wasn't much I'd say no to at this point, either. Zack and I had been best friends for what seemed like forever. There was nothing we didn't share with each other, including women on occasion.

Zack was in full planning mode today. He had multiple browser windows open, spreadsheets, and Word documents. He usually liked to be well prepared for everything, but today, he was kicking it into overdrive it seemed like! At the rate we were going, we'd have everything completely planned out by the end of the night. Which would leave us free to go hit the clubs here and celebrate.

Life is good when you're single!
