SpidersAndFlies wrote: Arthur, I am bereft. I cannot bridge the gap of communication that death opens up inside each of us, and between us—oh, Arthur, between us. It is chasm and cavern, a tunnel that expands and contracts so viciously that word and image are concertina’d beyond cognition. There must be another way. I began seeking the story of their lives and deaths. I wanted to ease them with the promise to tell their stories. But this undertaking has opened something up in *me*. Something I never imagined. A grasping, panting, waiting thing that sees the world now as so hideously random that the mere movement of a foot can end a life. This morning, I stepped out my own front door and trod upon a beetle scuttling past. It did *nothing*, Arthur, and death found it, capriciously, with me as its agent. How can we live when any movement, any action, any decision might cause death? And what use is a life paralyzed by the fear of mere movement? Thus we are dead things, trundling along until a second death finds us. I cannot live this way. Nor should anyone have to.

Body Found Drained of Blood, Mardi Gras Continues

A man was found dead last night, drained of blood. NOPD officers were called to the scene when a reveler found what she believed to be a gruesome float decoration just off Decatur street in the French Quarter, on the Krewe du Vieux parade route. The reveler, Marisol Gaudet, was searching for a friend she’d lost track of during the parade, and found a body instead.

“We got separated in the crowd, so I went back to the bar where we’d met up in case she went back. But she wasn’t there and I needed some air so I started down toward the river. I stopped because I saw what looked like a papier-mâché man. People put so much effort into their floats; I thought it fell off one of them! When I bent down and saw it was… Lord, I tell you, I about had a heart attack.”

Gaudet was, the responding officers say, intoxicated and extremely shaken by her discovery. The body has not yet been identified. The death has been ruled a homicide. Gaudet is not a suspect in the case at this time.

The mayor has stated that the Mardi Gras festivities will continue, as an investigation is launched. “This is a horrible crime,” the mayor told reporters this morning. “But Mardi Gras is a celebration of this city and its history. Most people out there are having good fun. We’re going to do everything we can to keep people safe, and find who committed this terrible crime. But we’re not going to let one disturbed person ruin it for the whole city."

NOPD simply advises the public to take precautions: “Be aware of your surroundings, travel with a buddy, stay in populated areas.”

Tess Tomlinson Tells Truths, on WNOW 96.3FM

“Listen. Listen. Y’all know Tess loves Mardi Gras. Well, y’all know Tess likes sittin’ on the porch and toasting y’all while you make fools of yourselves. Point is—hello! There is a dead body. A…a damn drained of blood dead body just dumped in the French Market and the mayor all ‘Naw, it’s fine, y’all go on.’ I know it’s fine for your ass, Mayor, cause you ain’t out there in the dark all drunk and reckless about to get killed!

“Let’s tell truth, since that’s what I do. Ain’t no mayor ever gonna cancel Mardi Gras ever cause of tourist dollars raining down on the city, okay? And let’s just be straight about that. Drunk tourists wanna come here from wherever and drop paper, who cares if they end up dead in a ditch, y’all feel me? That’s what the mayor is saying.

“Don’t hear me wrong, y’all. I ain’t saying cancel the whole thing. I’m just saying how ‘bout don’t act like this a birthday party and some naughty kid spilled the punch. This some serious stuff and I’d like a bit more than ‘y’all use the buddy system.’ And that’s Tess Telling Truth, y’all. Good morning."

Lucy Westenra

So we've all seen these tweets, right? Also Arthur, can you please tweet back and say yes, we've seen the mardi gras murder and are aware and NO, we did NOT murder someone as a publicity stunt?

Mina Murray

God what’s wrong with people

Arthur Quincey

Will do. I wasn't sure how you wanted to handle it. Address it or just ignore.

Lucy Westenra

…guys this is weird, right?

A body found IRL drained of blood JUST like in the game???

Mina Murray

Are we 100% sure it IS real?

A. Van Helsing

Tweets?

Mina Murray

People tweeted at us bc of that body they found in French Market, did you see?

Arthur Quincey

I can't imagine the actual police would be tricked into announcing that. Especially during Mardi Gras

A. Van Helsing

Ah, yes, I read it in the news.

Arthur Quincey

We all get our news on Twitter

A. Van Helsing

Yes, well, the Times-Picayune does leave something to be desired with regard to journalistic rigor.

Arthur Quincey

Just wait, Van. I'll get you on Twitter yet.

A. Van Helsing

There is, I suppose, a value to being succinct.

Lucy Westenra

I—you guys don't actually think someone actually did this because of our podcast do you? To get our attention?

Mina Murray

Well…we *are* living in a moment when resentment can turn into violence. Or to attention-seeking via violence.

I mean, it’s easy for me to dismiss the idea that anyone would actually be trying to get our attention bc in my mind we’re just doing a little podcast and we’re just…us. But I *do* acknowledge that ppl have strong feelings about media and the people who make it and so it IS possible that someone has fixated on us.

I mean not that all ppl who fixate on things they like are MURDERERS obviously. Just…you know?

Arthur Quincey

Yeah. Remember when someone recognized you at Rouse’s and you were like “WHAT EVER ON EARTH” and Lucy had to be like “you do get that you’re a little bit of a public figure” later?

Mina Murray

Ugh. I don’t wanna be a public anything.

Lucy Westenra

Nope yr just mine :D

Arthur Quincey

By which you mean you’re happy to take all the public attention for yourself :D

Lucy Westenra

Correct! I will take that bullet :D

Uh, I mean no bullets <__<

But I know what you mean, M. Yr right. We don’t know what’s going on for people.

Mina Murray

I guess my point is just that we do have a true crime podcast. It’d be irresponsible of us not to at least acknowledge the possibility, right?

Lucy Westenra

God you guys don’t think Harker could have done it, do you?

Jesus, no, never mind. I can’t believe I said that.

I think I have some feelings about my brother I need to talk about in therapy <___<

I’m just worried about him.

Mina Murray

Babe, it makes sense why your mind went there.

Even if it’s horrible, you know it's far-fetched that H is a murderer, so it's an easier thing to think about than him being hurt.

Lucy Westenra

I guess.

A. Van Helsing

Yes. At the risk of instructing you on matters to which I am not privy…sometimes when we are afraid for someone, it is easier to turn our fear to anger, which distances us, than allow in the worry, which feels close.

Arthur Quincey

Yes, that.

Lucy Westenra

…that makes sense. I tend to, uh, feel things very strongly. But yeah, I get that.

A. Van Helsing

I'm sure you care about your brother very much. Caring makes things complicated. I understand.

Lucy Westenra

I wish I could be a robot sometimes :(

Mina Murray

No you don’t, love.

Arthur Quincey

Should we contact the police and tell them about Allium? Maybe it’d help them with the case.

Lucy Westenra

But what if they shut the game down and it’s our only chance of finding Harker!?

Like, I just keep thinking that if we follow the clues he followed, then eventually we’ll end up wherever he is. Right?

Mina Murray

I…I hope so, Luce.

Lucy Westenra

And tbh guys i’m still pretty damn unsettled by Hark’s search history about dumping bodies. Like hello I’m NOT here for handing over info to the police that they might twist into a story about a Black man who’s a murderer!

Mina Murray

Okay, baby, we won’t. You’re right.

A. Van Helsing

Do we think that this…killer might pose an actual threat to Miss Mina or Miss Lucy in the real world?

Arthur Quincey

I think that you should both be careful. As. Fuck.
