CHAPTER 24

Google Hangouts

10:32 PM

Arthur Quincey

heyyyy professor :D

A. Van Helsing

Why hello, Arthur.

Arthur Quincey

hiii wait do you have a problem if i'm maaaybe a little drunk

A. Van Helsing

Not if it means I get to see what kind of a inebriate you are—confessional, moribund, flirtatious, happy, belligerent…

Arthur Quincey

what does moribund mean

i'm always flirty but confessional sounds kinda hot

A. Van Helsing

It means on death's door (which I hope you are not—I do recall you saying you could hold your liquor).

I like how flirty you are, and I would gladly hear any confession you chose to make.

Arthur Quincey

well I'm not a guy who gets in fights so

and i'm definitely not drunk enough to be dead

A. Van Helsing

No, dear, I just meant I hope you don't get sick.

Arthur Quincey

i was out with friends—well, kinda. work people. the more i hang out with lucy and mina and you the more i realize how like, the people i think are friends are really kinda like…just not friends?

haha i won't, like i said, i'm not that drunk. just tipsy :)

A. Van Helsing

It sounds like you should spend more time with us, then. Does it bother you to realize that those people aren't your true friends?

Arthur Quincey

Nah, I mean…it's more like, I don't mind being that version of me around them 'cause it's easy

I did tell them about you though

I hope that's okay :/

A. Van Helsing

You did? Yes, of course--it's nice that you would want to mention me. What did you say?

Arthur Quincey

One of the guys who was there is a…hook-up buddy. Or used to be a hook-up buddy. He wanted to know if I wanted to go home with him and I told him no, that I was seeing someone and not living that bachelor life any more

A. Van Helsing

I see. I realize…we haven't discussed our thoughts about seeing other people. Would you like to?

Arthur Quincey

See other people? No. I just want to see you.

A. Van Helsing

I…I feel the same, Arthur. I actually meant did you wish to discuss the issue, but I suppose we just did. So, did you say anything else about me?

Arthur Quincey

oh haha oops yeah

yes i said you were a hot, smart professor who liked to go hiking and camping and shit and were from amsterdam and they thought i made you up >:(

A. Van Helsing

I might have mentioned you too…

Arthur Quincey

!! omg to who

A. Van Helsing

To David. My ex? I, ah…I wrote him a rather embarrassingly plaintive email soon after we first chatted.

Arthur Quincey

august have you been pining over me

A. Van Helsing

I suppose I was, rather, yes :|

Arthur Quincey

van you are using emojis…wait, are you drunk, too?

also i would give a million dollars to see what you said about me

A. Van Helsing

No, simply attempting to style shift somewhat into this new medium to which you've introduced me.

Arthur Quincey

i knew you'd like it once you got the hang of it

A. Van Helsing

I didn't say I liked it.

Arthur Quincey

i'll show you that it has its uses later ;)

A. Van Helsing

Ah, there's the flirty drunk.

Arthur Quincey

so back to that email

the one you sent david about me

A. Van Helsing

Yes, I told him about you and how I'd felt something between us but couldn't imagine a beautiful, charming, infuriating man such as yourself would look twice at me.

Arthur Quincey

[starts typing, stops, starts typing, stops]

that's—why would you think that? Mostly I figured I was too…not interesting enough. For you.

A. Van Helsing

What? No, no, not at all. I…I still don't know quite how to act around you, Arthur. I find you very confusing. In the best possible way, but I am still…finding my footing, I suppose.

Arthur Quincey

I figured you were way out of my league unless—well, unless you just wanted to fuck me

A. Van Helsing

There is no “just” in that sentence; not for me. I do want to fuck you. More than I've wanted that with anyone in…ever, really. But I want to be around you in other moments. I want—well, I suppose you were right when you suggested that this medium of communication had its uses. I find my heart leaping a little when I see you in my chat box. Is that…customary?

Arthur Quincey

no one's ever—i mean. ugh. i kind of wish you were here but then i'm like, ugh, what would i say? sometimes i'm better at this stuff when i type it. and idk but it's definitely customary for me. my friend Sean said i talked about you like 23 times in the space of an hour btw. what did David say when you told him? I'd like to meet him. I want to know everyone you care about

A. Van Helsing

I feel the same. There is a way in which the distance of being able to express emotions honestly, without having the person I'm expressing them to see me have them, that feels freeing. I'm not sure I could be quite so honest in person yet either.

David said that you sounded like exactly what I needed.

Arthur Quincey

well, see, there's a good thing about this whole level of mediation, right? and obviously david is brilliant and you should listen to him

i really like you. i hope that's not a problem.

A. Van Helsing

Yes, I stand quite corrected on that front. Have I told you how much I like your honesty? No, it's not a problem. Nothing about you is a problem, except how incredibly distracting my feelings for you are. I've never been late so often in my life.

Arthur Quincey

i would be all over you if you were here rn fyi

sorry you're making it hard (haha) for me to write like, smart things

A. Van Helsing

I don't need smart things; I want whatever you feel you should give me.

I wish I were there, too. Now that we've utilized this medium for what it's best at. There are things for which it isn't so well suited, however.

Arthur Quincey

believe me i feel i should give you a lot of things right now

uh well

A. Van Helsing

Is that right? Care to share?

Arthur Quincey

i mean

there are things

it's good for

A. Van Helsing

Are you proposing that we have mediated chat sex, Arthur?

Arthur Quincey

anytime but also i just laughed hope that's okay

A. Van Helsing

I love your laugh.

Arthur Quincey

hey do you see that thing up on the bar under my name that's a little video camera

A. Van Helsing

I do.

Arthur Quincey

you should click that 'cause probably you'd like what i'm doing rn

A. Van Helsing

Is that right?

Would you be able to see me too?

Arthur Quincey

yeah of course, babe, it's like video chat

A. Van Helsing

I…I haven't showered.

Arthur Quincey

good. you're just gonna get messier ;)

A. Van Helsing
