CHAPTER 1

Text Message

Harker Westenra to John Seward

1:24 AM

Harker: I know I must sound crazy, but I think I need to do this.

I can’t stop thinking about it, imagining how it would feel to just…give in to that side of myself.

John: Er…do what?

Harker?

Information, please.

Harker.

Harker: I’ve wanted this for so long—wanted to shrug off the mantle of SHOULD that has always felt like both armor and noose. Who would I be without it? I’m not sure I know anymore.

John: COULD YOU POSSIBLY BE MORE VAGUE???

Harker: I have to do this. If there are consequences, then I accept them. To live always within the rules set forth for me—and, yes, the rules I have taken for myself…it chafes, John.

To see, suddenly, that there may be a way to break them—no, to obliterate them—fills me with a curiosity so strong I can’t resist it. I don’t think I want to.

John: Are you drunk texting? Writing poetry? HINT PLS!

The Top 10 Podcasts You Should Be Listening To (page 2 of 2)

Shadowcast

There are a lot of true crime podcasts out there, but this is one of our favorites. Set in New Orleans, lifelong residents Lucy Westenra and Mina Murray spin macabre tales of murder and mayhem in the City of the Dead—with just enough supernatural speculation to titillate.

Westenra's lively storytelling and Murray's dry humor make them a perfect pair—it’s no wonder they’re a couple in real life as well as the podcast! The duo's love for their home city is palpable, and their fascination with the darkness of human nature that lurks beneath the town makes for an enthralling hour of storytelling each week.

Tune in for grotesque tales of missing dignitaries dumped in the bayou, vengeful spirits rumored to haunt the French Quarter and the real deaths attributed to them, kidnapping plans gone awry in the city's infamous Garden District, and much more. This is the true crime tour through one of the most fascinating cities in America that you’ve been waiting for—just don't listen before bed!

WELCOME TO SHADOWCAST

A TRUE CRIME PODCAST FROM THE HEART OF HAUNTED NEW ORLEANS

In New Orleans, true (and perhaps true-ish) crime and tales of the supernatural go hand in hand. Come for the stories of murder, mayhem, and Mardi Gras; stay for the ways we freak each other out!

Shadowcast is produced and recorded locally, and you can find us on all your favorite social media sites in the footer. Catch new episodes each week, and if you love the show, please make sure to subscribe and review on iTunes or however you found us!

SHADOWCAST IS

Lucy Westenra (cohost)

A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Lucy discovered the "true crime" section of the library in middle school and hasn't looked back since. By day the twenty-five-year-old manages the renowned Holmwood Hotel in the Marigny, and her interest in researching the infamous 1913 murder—resulting in the Holmwood's resident ghost—led to the creation of the podcast. Lucy's love of the darker side of New Orleans history is shared by her best friend, girlfriend, and cohost, with whom she shared all those true crime books in middle school. Lucy is an active member of the African American History Association of New Orleans, dedicated to preserving and publicizing African American history in the Crescent City.

Mina Murray (cohost)

Mina grew up on stories of New Orleans history—the creepier, the better—and she put her childhood interest to work as a ghost tour guide in the French Quarter while she attended Tulane. After graduating with a dual degree in Education and Urban Studies, Mina began working with the Claudette Roget Project and is now the coordinator of their after-school programs, where she designs programming for middle and high school youth with an interest in exploring the arts and technology. When not relating stories of murder and supernatural mayhem on Shadowcast, or working with New Orleans youth, Mina can be found tending her plot in the community garden, baking, and being dragged to jazz shows by her cohost, even though it’s past her bedtime.

Arthur Quincey (social media maven)

A New Orleans transplant by way of Atlanta, Georgia, Arthur first met host Lucy Westenra at the Holmwood Hotel (one of Arthur's social media clients), and they hit it off sharing gruesome stories over café au lait. Arthur is in charge of Shadowcast's social media, blog and online presence. He also curates the "ShadowCats!" feature on the show's Instagram account, which is…pictures of cats casting shadows, of course. Arthur's never met a stranger and loves connecting people to their true passion in new and innovative ways…even when it's murder. Check out his website at www.AQuinceyMedia.com, and keep tweeting those cat pictures!

ShadowCats!

SpidersAndFlies wrote: Dear sir, I have recently come across your account here as well as begun listening to Shadowcast, both of which are wonderful! I write to you here rather than to the hosts because while Mina and Lucy are speaking for those human souls that have left the earth too soon, your affinity for cats suggests you share my desire to speak for the animals. I myself would like to start a podcast in which I tell the stories of our animal friends who are no longer with us. Perhaps I could ask you a few questions about podcasting? —Renfield

ShadowCats! wrote: Hey, bud, thanks for your message. Tbh I can’t really tell if you’re serious or if you’re messing with me, but I like to err on the side of generosity, so hello! I’d be happy to answer your questions and I’m curious to hear how you plan on speaking for the animals that are no longer with us.

SpidersAndFlies wrote: Oh I am so delighted that you responded! Many people do not, you know. But few have our overlap in interests :D Thank you for asking. This is my plan: I will be psychically communicating with our fallen animal brethren as I find them around the city, and I shall ask them how they met their ends. Where there is a story, I will tell it! Not for justice, you understand, but because life is sacred and I wish to honor its power. Some believe the larger or more complex the life (read: humans) the more valuable it is. But I do not agree. I believe even the smallest among us have a role to play, and I honor that role.

ShadowCats! wrote: You know what, I think that’s great. I would 100% listen to a podcast where you told the stories of roadkill and bugs on windowsills, Renfield, so godspeed. I think Mina and Lucy would get a kick out of it too. Live your truth!
