I didn’t think Colton could get any sexier but watching him interact with Lucy makes my insides melt. God, I don’t do this over men. I don’t swoon or lose my self-control but for some reason, with him, I do.
And it’s annoying.
Colton and Lucy win the balloon toss, but not before Lucy pegs him with a water balloon. He pretends to be mad—that is, until he starts to chase her around the yard. She’s giggling and screaming. Apparently, I can’t disguise the joy on my face because my sister is staring at me.
“What?”
“He’s sexy, isn’t he?” She nods at Colton.
Here we go.
“I mean, if you like that kind of thing,” I say, my tone noncommittal.
Nic turns to me slowly. “What do you mean, ‘that kind of thing’?”
What did I get myself into here?
“I meant, yeah, Colton is sexy. He just seems like such a broody alpha male.”
Nic laughs. “Oh, he is that, but he can also be sweet. Just look at how he is with Lucy. They adore each other.”
I know how that feels, I think to myself.
“You know, he doesn’t have a girlfriend. Maybe you should go over and talk to him.”
“Look, Nic, I know you want me to find a nice guy, but I’ve got too much going on right now.”
Before I can even admonish her more, Lucy and Colton come over to us. Why does he look as though he’s stalking his prey? His gaze is intense and undeniable. It makes me squirm where I stand.
“Can I open my presents now?” Lucy asks my sister.
Nic looks between me and Colton. “Let’s go ask your daddy, honey.”
Colton moves closer to me as they walk away. He looks around at the other guests sitting in the yard, then leans in near my ear, and his closeness makes me shiver.
“The minute Lucy is done with her cake and presents, you and I are out of here.”
He moves back to face me. I arch an eyebrow, keeping my voice quiet. “And why is that?”
“Because, darlin’, if I don’t get my hands on you soon, I’m going to explode.”
When he calls me darlin’, I can suddenly feel the wetness between my legs. I move to rub my thighs together in order to get some friction, and Colton notices.
“Oh no, you don’t, Goldie. If I can’t take care of you here, you can’t either.”
Of course my thoughts immediately go to his mouth on my pussy.
“Aunt Alex, I’m about to open your present,” Lucy yells across the yard. Jesus, this kid has good timing.
“We need to stop this, Colton. I’ll meet you after, but for now, we need to stop.”
He smirks as he walks over to Lucy, and I follow behind. “I’m coming, Lucy.”
Lucy opens my homemade gift. Well, it’s more like I bought several things and put them in a large gift bag for her.
She squeals as she opens each of them. “I’m so excited! I got a new dinosaur field guide and a vest for all my stuff. Look, Daddy, I can put my guide in one pocket and my pencil in the other.”
“There’s one more in there, Lucy.”
She throws the rest of the tissue paper in the air and everyone starts to laugh.
Lucy jumps up and down when she sees the fossil dig kit I bought her. “I can dig for my own fossils now! I know I’ll find a dinosaur bone or something.”
She runs over to me and gives me a hug. “Thank you so much for my presents, Aunt Alex. I love everything.”
“Wow, Alex, you sure knew what Lucy wanted.” My sister laughs as she follows her over.
Lucy runs back over to her gift table.
“Hey, if she’s going to actually be my niece someday, I want her to like me. By the way, any talk of giving me a brother-in-law?”
Nic lets out a sigh. “We’ve talked about getting married, but it’s just too soon. I mean, we are just really getting to know each other, and making sure that Lucy is OK with everything.”
“Oh, I think you are using Lucy as an excuse. Who cares how long you’ve know each other? You love each other, and it’s obvious that Lucy thinks of you as her stepmom already, so why wait?”
I can’t believe I actually said who cares about the length of time you know a person. Damn that Colton. He’s messing with my mind.
I hear another squeal. Looking over, I see Lucy hugging Colton. He’s kneeling down so he can hug her back, and my heart melts.
“What did you get, Lucy?” Daniel asks.
She shows him, then runs over to us with an envelope in her hand. She’s breathless. I look over at Colton, who has a big smile on his face.
“I can’t believe it. Uncle Murph got me three tickets to go to a real fossil dig and dinosaur show.” She’s jumping up and down like a jumping bean.
“Wow, that’s great, Lucy.” My sister bends down to hug her.
Suddenly, Lucy expression changes. It’s as if she been scolded. Still at eye level, my sister asks her what’s wrong.
Daniel and Colton must’ve seen the change too because they makes their way over.
“What’s wrong, sweets?”
She looks between Nic and Daniel. “I know I’m supposed to want you and Nicole to go with me to dig for fossils, but I’d really like to ask Uncle Murph and Aunt Alex, but I don’t want you to be mad.”
Her bottom lip starts to tremble. Oh, sweet Jesus, she’s breaking my heart.
My sister looks at Daniel. “Oh, sweetheart, you can take anyone you want. I’m sure Uncle Murph and Aunt Alex would love to go with you.” Daniel gives us both looks that tell us not break his daughter’s heart.
Colton smirks at me, and I know what I have to do. “Of course we’ll go with you, Lucy. I’m sure your Uncle Murph agrees, don’t you?”
“Oh absolutely. I think the three of us will have a great time…digging for fossils and looking at the dinosaurs,” he says as he tries to stifle his laugh.
I’m mentally telling him not to push his luck on this.
“Really? You’ll go with me?”
My sister is hiding her smile behind her hand.
“It’ll be fun. And the two of you can get to know each other better,” Nic says.
I inwardly groan. If she only knew.
