A Christmas For Eve by Michael James (16)

Memorial Day weekend went by fast like I thought it would. Spending three days with my parents was tough. My dad kept going on and on about how Kevin's picture raised the most money. They kept asking me questions about Kevin all weekend. When they asked where he was, I took the cowards way out and told them he was training out of town. I'm not sure why I lied and didn't tell them the truth about him breaking up with me. I feel horrible about it. It isn't like me to bold face lie to anyone. When I get the courage, I'll tell them the truth.

I let out a yawn as I close the file I have open on my desk. Having to entertain my parents for three days was exhausting. We went hiking at one of the local waterfalls, had a cookout and went to two different casinos’. Every day we were out doing something and up late sitting around a bonfire or watching movies. I file the folders in the filing cabinet before I get ready for lunch. I have a doctor's appointment during my lunch hour today, so I get my purse and put my phone inside it and leave my office. I stop off at Cynthia's office to let her know I'm leaving.

I knock on the door frame and say, “I'll be back. I'm stepping out for lunch.”

“Can I join you? I have a few things I need to discuss with you.”

“I’m actually using my lunch hour to go to my doctor's office.”

“Oh, is everything alright?”

“Yep, just a routine checkup.”

“Alright, stop by when you get back.”

When I get to my appointment and sign in, I take a seat in the waiting area. I pick up a magazine, and it's the same one I saw back in Denver when Tracy was in the hospital. Instead of putting it down, I open it and find the page Kevin is on. I run my fingers down his face. I miss him so much. I just wish I knew what went wrong. What could possibly be so important that he feels he can't share with me? Is he trying to protect me? Is there another woman? I've gone over everything in my head, and it doesn't make any sense to me. He wanted to come with me to Denver, but instead, he ends up in Los Angeles in an apartment that I had no idea he even had. I close the magazine and drop it back on the end table; I've put myself through enough.

I get called back and wait in the tiny room for my doctor. I hope she isn't much longer because I don't want to be late getting back to work. Especially now that I know, my boss is waiting for me.

“Afternoon, Eve. Sorry to keep you waiting.”

“It's alright Dr. Latinski.”

“I've told you many times to call me Theresa. What brings you in today?”

“Just a checkup. You wanted to make sure the new birth control was working.”

“You feel they are a good fit? When was your last menstrual cycle?”

“Beginning of March.”

“Eve, it's June. Any chance you are pregnant?”

“I've never been regular, and you told me switching pills could mess up my cycle.”

“We better get a pregnancy test to make sure.”

I take the pee cup with me to the bathroom. No way am I pregnant. I'd know, right? Isn't there morning sickness, sore breasts, and all that good stuff? Being pregnant is the last thing I need. I'm not going to be a single mom.

I'm fifteen minutes late getting back to work. I drop my stuff off on my desk and go right to my boss’s office. Her door is closed so maybe she won't notice I'm late. Her secretary isn't at her desk, so I knock on Cynthia's door. When she tells me to enter, I go in and take a seat.

“Eve, thanks for making time for me.”

“Sorry my appointment took so long.”

“You're fine. The reason I wanted to talk to you is to give you a heads up. I'm leaving Glazed Marketing.”

“What? Why?”

“The company has been sold to Empire Print, and I refuse to work for them.”

“I had no idea the company was selling. They are one of our biggest competitors.”

“It was hush-hush, and I'm not even supposed to tell you. I like you, Eve, and you are valuable to this company. I hate to be the one to tell you the promotion I was going to give you, isn't going to happen either. Empire plans on bringing in their own for these positions.”

I've worked my ass off for this company and that spot as assistant manager.”

“I know you have. That is why I'm leaving. I would suggest you start looking for a new place to work.”

“Where are you going?”

“I'm actually moving back to Texas. I lined up a job already, and I'll be home. I'm truly sorry Eve.”

“I appreciate the heads up. I'm not sure what I'll do. I like living here, and there is only one other marketing company left here.”

“I've heard good things about Blitz Press. If you leave, maybe you can get Kevin to take his campaign with you. Taking a client to a new job with his status will show you have initiative. Email your clients to let them know you are leaving the company and someone else will handle their marketing. If they like you, they will follow.”

“When is your last day?”

“Friday, and for the record, I'm going to miss working with you.”

“I'll miss you too.”

“I'm taking to rest of the day off. You should do that as well. Go figure out your next move.”

I took Cynthia up on her offer and left work a half hour ago. I'm now at the grocery store to pick up some milk and sandwich meat. When I get into line to cash out the gossip tabloids stare at me and there on the cover is Kevin with another woman. I tell myself to look away. It can't be real; no way is he with another woman.

“Ma'am, the line has moved.”

I look at the woman, wondering what she is talking about. She points at the cashier. Right, I'm in the checkout line. I pay for my stuff and leave. I run out to my car with tears filling my eyes. How could this happen? The man I love is in another state with another woman, and I’m here pregnant with his baby. My job is going nowhere after busting my ass. How did my life become such a mess?
