A Christmas For Eve by Michael James (17)

My old boss Cynthia left and now my boss is Trish Potter. She's nice and actually funny. She's easy to work for, but the problem is she did give the position I worked hard for to Ann Lopez. That pill was hard to swallow knowing I did my work on top of Ann's work while she was on leave. The campaign that landed her the promotion I did all the work on. I don't have any hard feelings towards Ann, but someone could have given me credit. I brought it up to Trish and she at least listened to me. She ended up telling me to keep working and there will be more promotions coming up. It angers me but what else is there to do.

“Hey, Eve, I was wondering if we could have lunch today?”

“Sure, Jacquelyn. What time?”

“I plan on going in an hour if you can swing it?”

“Works for me. Just stop in whenever you are ready.”

Jacquelyn Sander's has been working here for the last six years. I'm curious as to why she wants to have lunch with me. We haven't ever gone out to lunch before or hung out outside of work. She basically comes in does her job and leaves. She sweet as pie and talks to everyone.

I open my e-mail account and I have a lot of them. I sent out notices to quite a few clients letting them know I'm leaving. I'm not sure why I did that, it's not like I have another job. I've thought about quitting here, but now that I'm pregnant I need to make sure I have income. I have looked into working at other places, but I'm not sure I want to be at the bottom again.

I open and read some of the mail. It seems most are disappointed and want to know where I'm going. I open Kevin's e-mail last to read. I close it because I have no answer to give him. A part of me wishes he asked about me personally. Maybe it's best he didn't ask, I mean what am I going to say back, hey jerk you’re going to be a dad? I close out my e-mails I don't feel like dealing with this anymore today. Jacquelyn should be here soon for lunch anyways.

I went to lunch with Jacquelyn and she gave me a good pitch on starting up our own business in marketing. We could work from home or anywhere there's internet. I have to admit it's very tempting. It would be a big leap of faith hoping some of our clients would go with us. We'd have to basically steal clients and I’m not sure I want to do anything illegal. I have built a good relationship with many outside contractors like Erica Cunningham. I know she is independent and can work with anyone. If I can get Kevin to come with me, I'm almost positive others will follow suit. To get Kevin to come with me I'd have to tell him about the baby, and honestly, I've been unsure if I was going to tell him.

“Hey, Eve.”

I look towards the door and Trish stands there. “Hey, what's up?”

“Did you know your Boyfriend has a fight tomorrow? We should have known so we could get his commercials to play during his fight.”

“I had no idea he had a fight. I have never in the past done paid advertisement. It's nothing Glazed Marketing has ever done.”

“Well, this isn't Glazed Marketing anymore. I suggest you get on the phone and find out how to get this done.”

“Won't this cost Kevin more money?”

“Really, Eve? He can afford it. Get it done and let me know when it's set to air. I want it during his fight. So, you might want to find out what time he fights.”

“Got it. I'll get right on that.”

She leaves my office and to tell you the truth, this pisses me off. How can she just tell me to air a commercial without a client approving it? I'm not doing that to him or any of them. That's not how I do work. People have budgets for a reason. I open up my e-mails and I copy all the addresses. Afterward, I sent a mass e-mail using my personal account. I no longer work for Glazed Marketing. I will not go over set budgets like I was just asked to do. Thanks, Eve. I log off my computer pack up my few belongings. I go right to Jacquelyn’s office.

“I'm in. I just quit without notice. I hope you were serious.”

“Oh, I'm serious, but no notice?”

“I have something I need to do. I'll get a hold of you on Monday.”

I go to leave, and she calls after me, “Eve, did you tell your clients?”

“I did. When we get started I'm also going to run an ad in the paper. I gotta go. We'll talk soon. Have a good weekend.”

I just walked out on my job. I didn't tell anyone I quit. I'm not going to be a doormat for anyone anymore. I can work my ass off building me, right? I get in my car and drive home. I can't think about it right now. I have something more important to do.
