Going All In by Tory Baker (17)

Mia

Cash rushes me to the hospital and even fills out the forms for me to be seen. He moves so fast, that if I wasn’t already that way, he would have made me dizzy. We sit in the lobby, waiting to be called back. I have my head on his shoulder and he has his arm wrapped around me. His warmth is surrounding me and giving me a reason not to hyperventilate.

“Mia Edwards,” the nurse calls.

I get up and Cash is right there with me every step of the way. When she’s done going over my vitals, she asks when my last cycle was. I pause, because I honestly can’t remember.

“I don’t know… it’s been a while, I guess,” I whisper and when I tell her that, she hands me a cup.

“Bathroom is right through there. We need to rule out everything as a precaution. Wouldn’t want any side effects with a baby, if you’re prescribed medicine.” I blanch.

Could I be pregnant?

I look at Cash and he’s looking hopeful for the first time this evening.

I finish and leave the cup on the counter where the nurse instructed, then return to Cash. He settles me on his lap and declares, “Darlin’, if you are pregnant. I’ll be the happiest man on Earth. You’re my soul. The thought of losing you… I can’t handle it, I just can’t.”

“Cash, you’re going to make me bawl my eyes out again,” I whisper into the room. He sits there and holds me. One of the best feelings in the world is his arms around me.

What seems like minutes later, the doctor comes in and goes over my chart. We discuss my family history of cancer and I try not to cry again. He pats my shoulder reassuringly, and excuses himself. It seems like a lifetime before he finally comes back in with my results.

“Congratulations Ms. Edwards. You’re pregnant,” he says.

Cash has a smile on his face a mile long and I can’t help but smile back at him. It seems like he’s happier than I’ve seen him before.

“Now, I’d still like to run bloodwork on you and go ahead and get you up to obstetrics to get an ultrasound on you. It’s precautionary. We want to make sure everything is okay and see how far along you are. Once we get all that in order, I’ll get you something to help with the nausea and morning sickness.”

Morning sickness? It’s more like all day, every day. I don’t tell him that, however.

“Thank you, Doc,” Cash says to him as I nod my head up and down and say thanks. I’m still in shock. After the doctor leaves, I spin around towards Cash and he has me up in his arms.

“I’m so damn happy Mia, Baby. Can’t wait to see you in our home with our children surrounding us,” he says into my ear. I’m smiling now, finally content that this was meant to be. I was always meant to be in Cash’s arms.

The nurse comes in to get my blood work and then she escorts us to the OB department.

I’m up on the table with a sheet laying over my legs and bare from the waist down. Apparently when you’re this early into your pregnancy you get a vaginal ultra sound. When the technician comes in and asks if I’m ready I shake my head yes, and Cash comes over to hold my hand. When the lady rolls a condom on the probe I visibly flinch, and Cash is not looking too impressed either. The tech obviously notices our faces.

“This is the only way we can get an accurate read of your baby and see that everything is developing correctly.”

Only a few minutes later, we hear our baby’s heartbeat. I look at Cash and mumble, “I love you so much, Cash Haynes.”

“I love you right back, Mia.”

When the technician is all done, she tells me to wait there while the doctor reads the report. I get cleaned up and Cash is right there every step of the way.
