Second Chances by M. S. Parker, Cassie Wild (19)

Camry

My brain was still half-asleep as it registered warm, muscled arms wrapped around me.

This was something I wasn’t used to, but it felt good. If one of my regulars—or even one of the newer ones—was in the mood to cuddle, and it felt this nice, then fine. I’d need to charge extra because otherwise, I’d hear it from Stefano but

No.

Wait.

Stefano was in jail.

I wasn’t a whore anymore.

So who the hell was I in bed with?

Suddenly, I was fully awake and I jolted upright, staring down at the man next to me. A familiar-looking man who wasn’t supposed to be in bed with me.

Ever.

“G’ morning,” Jacen said, his voice a sleepy murmur.

“Good morning?” I echoed.

He squinted up at me. “Why does that sound more like a question than a response?”

Good morning?” I repeated it again. “Is that all you have to say?”

He sat up slowly, scratching his head, then his chest in the sort of absent way that told me it wasn’t something he was really thinking about. But when he saw me watching, he gave me the sexy sort of grin that said he would probably do it again just so I’d look at him the same way.

“Is there something else you want me to say? Prepare a script,” he offered.

“Don’t be a smart-ass!” I snapped.

“Well, you seem to want me to say something, and unless you want me to thank you for blowing my mind…” He paused and winked at me. “Among other things, then…well, darling, you’ll just have to help me out.”

Sputtering, I got up and started to pace, unable to think straight with him smiling at me and looking so gorgeous. So much like the boy I’d crushed on for so many years.

Shit.

“I have to pee,” I announced as I headed for the bathroom.

“Ladies first then.”

He was still wearing that goofy smirk when I turned to glare at him, and I had to turn away almost immediately. It was impossible to stay pissed at him when he was looking at me like that, and I knew it was all on me. I was freaking out because we’d done it again—we’d

Say it, I thought sourly as I shut the bathroom door behind me. If you can do it, then you can think it.

We’d made love.

Again.

I couldn’t think straight around him. He turned everything upside-down. I knew I should get dressed and walk away. I needed to focus on finding Daytin, and I couldn’t do that when being with him made me want to touch him, kiss him...But when I looked up at my reflection as I washed my hands, I realized I had a goofy smile on my face. The sort of smile I hadn’t seen on my face before. And I knew he was responsible.

He was sitting at the foot of the bed by the time I came out, but stood as soon as he saw me.

“In a hurry?” I asked.

“A bit.” He got up and walked past, pausing to drop a kiss on my forehead. A shiver went through me at the touch, and the sweet ache inside my chest swelled until my throat was tight, too.

“Go on,” I said irritably, flapping a hand at him as I started looking around, trying to find my clothes. The fact that they weren’t easy to find just reminded me of how hungry we’d been for each other last night.

While he was in the bathroom, I grabbed his t-shirt from the floor and pulled it on as I moved back into the main part of the suite to find my skit. I shivered a little at the sight of the table. Who would have thought that a conference table could bring on such erotic memories? Such sweet ones?

Not me, that was bloody certain.

I’d no sooner found one of my shoes than there was a knock at the door. Darting a look at the bathroom, I hesitated, but whoever it was knocked again, louder and harder.

I moved over to the door and peeked through the peephole. If that was room service, they needed to adjust their approach

Oh, shit.

Staring through the narrow opening, I found myself eying my brother.

My very pissed-off brother.

Gulping, I stepped back and thought about hiding under the covers. He’d go away, sooner or later, right?

I could grab Jacen and we could hide out under the covers, make out, maybe play charades

That thought was quashed a second later as he started to pound on the door again. He wasn’t being quiet, and he wasn’t going away. If he kept that up – and it was much more when then if – other people would start complaining.

Quickly, I opened the door, hissing at him under my breath.

“Would you stop? Are you trying to get security called on us?”

He didn’t even acknowledge me as he brushed past me and looked around the room.

“Where is he?” Kaleb demanded, his face flushed.

“He’s…you know what? That’s none of your business. What in the hell are you doing here?” I demanded. “How did you find me?”

“Don’t worry about it,” he said harshly. “But now that I am, what the hell are you doing here? And where is that bastard?”

I opened my mouth, then closed it. Closing my eyes, I replayed his words, then accepted that he’d said exactly what I’d thought he’d said. “You know what, Kaleb? Go fuck yourself.”

I took a step around him, but he caught my arm, stopping me mid-step.

“Not so fast.”

I jerked away hard enough to earn a surprised look, but I was too pissed to care. “You do not get to tell me what to do, Kaleb. Not anymore. I’m an adult–”

“Then maybe you should act like it!” He cut me off. “You’re twenty-two-years-old, not two! Stop having a temper tantrum when things don’t go your way and stop wanting things just because you’ve been told you can’t have them.”

“Whoa…”

Jacen’s voice came from behind us, and both Kaleb and I both turned to see him standing there in a pair of unbuttoned jeans, his hands up and palms out, like he was trying to surrender or something. Except I could see the tension in him though, and I knew surrender was the last thing on his mind.

I could tell by the way my brother’s eyes narrowed on him, the way a muscle bunched, then pulsed in Kaleb’s jaw, that this wasn’t going to end well. When Kaleb started forward, I caught his arm.

“Hold up.”

He shrugged me off like I weighed nothing, and while it wasn’t a violent movement, it still pissed me off.

“Kaleb,” I snapped. “Stop! That’s enough. I’m not a child.”

But again, he acted like he didn’t hear me.

“You son of a bitch.” He didn’t even hesitate.

I saw it coming, but not in time to do more than react as he plowed his fist into Jacen’s face. “Shit!”

Jacen saw it coming too, but he just stood there, resigned and unmoving. His head snapped back, and he slammed into the wall, staggering a moment before he righted himself.

“Feel better?” he asked, reaching up to gingerly probe at his jaw.

“No, you stupid, bloody fuckhead! Why can’t you find one of your stupid flunkies to fuck? Leave my sister alone!”

“Excuse me!” I tried to step between them but Kaleb shifted to keep me behind him. “I’m right here.”

“Asshole.” Kaleb’s hands were still in fists. “Fucking asshole. I ought to hit you again.”

“I don’t think so.” Jacen wiggled his jaw, eying Kaleb. “I gave you one, for the sake of friendship. I’m not giving you another.”

“You’ve never given anybody a damn thing in your life,” Kaleb said, shaking his head. “You wouldn’t know how, you selfish prick.”

A flicker of pain moved across Jacen’s dark eyes.

“That’s enough,” I said again as I finally managed to get between them, facing Kaleb. “You need to stop before you say something you’ll regret—to him or me.”

Kaleb opened his mouth, then closed it. After a minute, he shook his head. “I’m thinking clear enough right now for both of us. You’re not. You need to get dressed. I’m taking you home.”

“I…you…” Gaping at him, I couldn’t find any words. I hadn’t just heard him right, had I?

I looked at Jacen for help and saw that he had shut down, face folded into tight lines, mouth set in an uncompromising line. “Maybe you should go, Camry.”

Sucking in a breath, I told myself that hadn’t hurt. I was just pissed off at all of this, the situation, everything. And he’d just gotten punched in the face. Of course, he wouldn’t want me to stay. “Yeah, maybe you’re right. Maybe I should.”

Turning away, I ignored the feel of Jacen watching me, just as I ignored Kaleb when he said, “You can wait for me downstairs. My car is still out front.”

Like hell, I was going anywhere with him.
