Nox

 

Two Months Later

“Surprise!”

“Holy shit,” I squeal and stumble back as all my friends jump out from behind tables at O’Malley’s wearing ridiculous party hats.

Adam chuckles and then strides forward, picks me up, and spins us around once. The joy in his expression is a steep contrast from the man I first came face to face with six months ago. He’s so beautiful it takes my breath away.

“Were you surprised?”

“Very surprised. What is all this?” I ask, looking around at the streamers and balloons decorating the bar.

“It’s your surprise birthday party.”

A rush of emotions hits me in the chest and I can’t decide if I want to laugh or cry. What I do know is that I want to kiss the hell out of my boyfriend. I do just that, devouring his lips until we’re both breathless, not giving a shit that we have an audience.

“I’ve never had a birthday party.”

“You’re going to have one every year from now on. Maybe half-birthday parties, too. Hell, I’ll even try to work in as many un-birthday’s as I can manage.”

“I love you,” I kiss him one more time before letting him set me down so I can thank the rest of my friends for being here.

 

 

Adam

My heart is fill as I watch Nox flit about the party full of happiness and light. I can’t bear to imagine what would’ve happened if I hadn’t responded to his anonymous post two years ago. My life without Nox in it is unfathomable.

“Hey, thanks for inviting us,” Cas says, as he approaches with Beau at his side.

“Since Beau works here I figured it was only polite,” I tease. “Seriously though, I’m glad you could be here. After everything you did for Nox I consider you part of my patchwork family.”

“Thank you.” Cas pulls me in for a quick hug. “By the way, Kira sang like a canary. It turns out she was behind all the notes and vandalism, but Harrison was pulling the strings. He approached her in a bar after he saw you and Nox together and got her all wound up about it.”

“That’s so crazy. I’m glad it ended the way it did.”

“Amen to that. Now if you’ll excuse us, Beau has been dying for us to see about the Dani situation.”

“Have fun,” I give them a wink and do a mental cheer for Dani.

I notice Gage by himself at the bar, nursing a beer. What I wouldn’t give to help him find peace and happiness again.

A ripple of love and lust moves through me as Nox nears me with a suggestive smirk and half-lidded eyes.

“I love that you organized all of this for me, but how late do we have to stay?” he asks.

“Why, was there something else you’d rather be doing?”

“Before I knew about this I sort of had a little something planned at home.”

Nox

Since the attack Adam has been exceptionally gentle with me. As much as I appreciate that, I’m more than ready to be manhandled. And, that’s not the only thing I’m ready for.

Before I’d gone to meet Adam at the bar for what turned out to be my surprise party, I’d tidied up around the apartment and jumped in the shower to make sure I was squeaky clean and nicely groomed in all the necessary places. The first thing I notice when Nox and I step into the apartment is rose petals on the floor. My heart gets gooey at all the trouble Nox went through to set this up.

I toe off my shoes and then follow the trail of petals down the hall toward our bedroom. I laugh out loud when I see ‘Top Me?’ spelled out in flowers on the bed.

“Who says romance is dead?” Nox says from behind me.

“I don’t understand how I got so lucky, but I love you, too.”

“You’ll like it,” I assure him before climbing out of bed and grabbing my laptop. I pull up the images I have saved and then turn the computer toward Nox.

“The Amanda Fund? What is this?”

“The idea you had a few weeks ago about donating some funds to Rainbow House, I decided to take it a step further. The first Monday of every month half the profits at Heathens will go to Rainbow House, and the third Monday they will go to a charity that helps young men and women rescued from sex trafficking.”

Nox’s breath catches, his hand covering his mouth as a tear rolls down his cheek.

“Thank you.”

“No, thank you. I should be doing more to give back to people in need. If you’d like, I thought you could be in charge of the publicity and everything for this.”

“I’d like that, thank you. This makes me so happy.”

“I’m glad.” I pull Nox in and kiss the top of his head. “All I ever want is to make you so happy you’ll never want to leave me. I want to find ways to make us stronger together, always.”

“Nothing can ever tear us down, we can only ever get stronger. We’re forged in fire and made of strength. We’re going to be together forever.”

“Sounds like a plan to me, Bird. Because I don’t plan on ever letting you go.”
