From These Ashes: Haven Hart Book 4 by King, Davidson (23)

Black

I woke to an incredible suction around my morning wood and a pleasant humming that was felt straight up my spine.

“Mmm. This is my favorite way to wake up.” I saw the shape of Quill’s head under the sheet and lightly rubbed over it.

Reaching orgasm wouldn’t take long, I was always hard as steel in the morning, and with Quill’s body wrapped around mine all night, it was like an all-night edging.

Quill’s fingers scraped my inner thighs until he was cupping my balls and pushing me right over the edge. He moaned as he swallowed my come, and I was shocked my dick was already twitching back to hardness.

“I knew it,” Quill said as he peeked out of the covers, arms crossed over my chest and a sappy smile on his angelic face.

“What’s that?”

“You’d taste amazing.”

Yep, dick definitely wanted more. But the shrill of my cell phone popped our lustful bubble and the reality of why Quill was here in the first place came crashing down.

“Black,” I spoke into the phone, watching carefully as Quill slipped off me and to the side. He watched my face, likely searching for my reaction to what the Team X leader was saying to me. He’d get none.

“Morning, sir. Sorry there was nothing to report until now, but we have been able to get a lead on the bombings.” He was speaking fast but clearly, and whatever room he was in made his voice reverberate.

“That’s fine. I was busy myself last night as well.” I shot a wink at Quill, glad when I got a little smile out of him.

“Very good, anything about the case?”

“No. Tell me your findings.”

“Right, so. Three cars exploded outside Joker’s Sin. Fortunately, only one person was injured but will make a full recovery. The placement of the bombs didn’t seem like they were made to kill anyone.”

Interesting conclusion. “Why do you believe that?”

“Two were in the alley beside Joker’s Sin, minimal if any traffic. The other was an abandoned vehicle that was next to a vacant building across from Joker’s Sin. Also, low traffic.”

“And you think what?”

He cleared his throat. “We don’t think anything, sir, we know. This was to scare, not kill.”

At the club, Quill had asked if it was Ronnie, and we were all quick to tell him absolutely not. But maybe he was involved somehow.

“Do we have a who?”

Quill slid out of bed, and I watched as his stunning body, all legs and smooth skin, walked into the bathroom.

“No fingerprints have been recovered. The cameras around Joker’s Sin caught a man in a hoodie go down the alley and back over to the abandoned car, so we suspect that’s the guy.”

The Sterlings could have hired someone to scare Quill into dropping the charges and go away.

“We need that video.”

“Already obtained, sir. Would you like someone to send it your way or do you want to come in?”

A part of me very much wanted to view it here, but I wasn’t sure I was ready for Quill to see it. “I’ll come down to the office. I need three guys here to watch Quill.”

“Done, sir.”

“I’ll be there in a couple of hours. Let me get ready and as soon as the guys get here, I’ll head over.”

After I hung up, I grabbed a pair of briefs and slipped them on. I passed the bathroom where it sounded like Quill was showering. I had a huge urge to join him, but I knew I’d never leave if I did. Instead, I opted to make coffee and cook something for breakfast.

The shower turned off just as the last of the coffee dripped into the carafe. By the time Quill joined me in the kitchen, I had some eggs and bacon on a plate for him.

“You cook?” His eyes widened as he took in the meal.

“Yes. I like surviving,” I chuckled, and poured him a mug of coffee. “How do you take your coffee?”

“Ahh, and the barista becomes the patron.” He pursed his lips as he took in the items on the counter. “Two scoops of sugar and some caramel milk please.”

I slid the mug to him and we were silent for a few minutes before he spoke again.

“So, what’s the dilly, they catch the guy?”

“Dilly?” What the fuck?

He rolled his eyes as he took a sip of coffee. “The deal, the situation.”

I nodded even though I didn’t understand the lingo. “Right. Well, I have to go into the office. Three guys are coming to stay here until I return. Hopefully, we can figure this all out quickly and you can return home.”

Quill’s eyes scanned my large kitchen. It was an open plan, so they stopped when his gaze hit the window across the way in the living room. The view was vast and gorgeous. You could see the mountains that were barren since the leaves had all fallen. The branches all looked like they were reaching for the sky or paying homage to Hart Castle many miles away.

“What is it?” I asked, concerned by his pained expression.

“Am I going to have babysitters for the rest of my life?”

“No.” I cleared our dishes and when I walked back to him, he gave me a pleading look, wanting more than my taciturn answer.

“This will end. Like I said last night, you’ll be free of all this and won’t have to worry…” My mind went to the hooded guy.

“That.” He pointed an accusing finger at me. “That face, what did you just think about?”

I didn’t want to upset Quill, but at the same time, keeping anything from him could inadvertently put him in more danger.

“There was a video of the guy who might have planted the bombs. My team thinks it was a scare tactic. That the guy was hired.”

Quill nodded as his fingers fiddled with his silver bracelets. “Scare me into dropping the charges? That’s what you’re thinking, isn’t it?”

“Most likely. My attorney informed me this morning that the restraining order was granted and has been delivered. My guess? That was the final straw for the Sterlings. You were granted the temporary ex parte, which is fourteen days. He will have to go to court and fight it and if he loses, it will stay with him. If your charges stick and he goes to trial and he loses, forget it, he’s done.”

“So, it is Ronnie then?”

Brushing a stray hair that covered one of his green eyes, I answered, “It’s probable he or his father hired someone to scare you, yes.”

“I wanted to drop them.”

The clock said I had a few extra minutes, so I sat beside him. “I know, and you know now what I think about the authorities. Nothing may come of this, but it will be public record and will taint their family name. I think Bartholomew Sterling fears that more than anything. Whether his son evades persecution or not, their name is tarnished.”

“That’s the thing.” He turned in his seat and our knees just touched. “Your hate the police, which I totally get. Why do it this way, why not do it your way?”

The faint thud of an oncoming headache was beckoning me. “People like the Sterlings don’t just disappear. I would if I had to, but I hoped this would be enough. I’m starting to think I need a new, better plan.”

“But it’s not enough. So what, I hide here until it’s over? And what happens if Ronnie does face justice and their name is smudged? I won’t be free, Black, they will want revenge. That hooded guy will come for me, mark my words.”

There was something in Quill’s tone, almost like he knew who the hooded guy was, and I wanted to ask but the clock indicated I didn’t have time.

“Can we talk more about this later? I have to get ready. Three people are coming here. Don’t give them a hard time, please?”

A tiny lift coupled with a mischievous glint in his eyes told me Quill was going to ask for something.

“Okay… on one condition.”

And there was that headache. “What?”

He waved his hand over the room. “Can I make this place look like Christmas?”

Christmas? “What did you have in mind?”

“Tree, just a little holiday cheer. Please?” He batted his eyes, fucking batted them, and oh for fuck’s sake, is he jutting his lip out?

“Fine, but they get the supplies. You stay here!”

He nodded excitedly and hopped off the chair. “I’m going to make a list. Oh, and a credit card, please.”

What the hell had I agreed to?
