Lawyer's Secret Omega: M/M Non-Shifter Mpreg (Dewey Cheetum & Howe Law Book 1) by Bella Bennet (21)

Chapter 21

Ryan

Marcus wanted to carry me up the steps into the jet. There was no way that was happening, though. My right arm was perfectly fine, my balance was fine, I could see fine and I was walking up the steps into the jet myself- and damn, what a jet. Those law partners sure travel in style.

I guess they had left so fast that there was no flight attendant, so Eric acted as the flight attendant, even posing and batting his eyelashes at me until Marcus glared and growled. After we took off, I laid down on the couch. Marcus was right next to me, as close as he could get. He had one hand on my chest the entire flight. I fell asleep at some point, only waking up when Marcus sat me up for the landing.

I felt like hell. I probably looked even worse. I hadn't felt like eating earlier but I was hungry now, and I was really feeling the pain. I didn't want to go to a hospital because I knew it would take forever, but I was also in pain.

"How are you doing?"

I looked over at Marcus.

"I hurt."

Marcus's face fell.

"No, don't worry. I don't feel any new pain. I'm just tired. I'm actually hungry, which is good." Marcus chewed the inside of his cheek. I had been around him enough to know that he was thinking over some problem. "What are you worried about? I'm fine. I just need some pain medicine. I don't even know if I can take ibuprofen or Tylenol or while being pregnant."

Eric frowned. What was he thinking about? If I hadn't died by now I wasn't going to. Just get me to the hospital so they can check me over, then I could leave and go home. I'm sure he would want to take me back to his penthouse so he could keep an eye on me. The thought of his bathtub with those jets was a welcoming thought. All I wanted to do was sit in his tub. I hoped Lance forgave me for recovering at Marcus's penthouse instead of our apartment.

Oh my God, Lance! "Do you know what time it is? I just realized that Lance is probably wondering where I am! I need to tell him I'm okay."

Marcus reached over and squeezed my hand. "Don't worry. I called Lance when I realized something was wrong. I've been in contact with him the whole day."

Oh, thank God. Marcus was so good to me. I teared up again and sniffed. I just needed to relax. My emotions were out of control.

"I do have a question to ask you."

I turned my head towards Marcus. He looked serious. "Do you mind if we take a short detour before we go to the hospital?"

A short detour? What errand did he have to run that was more important than me getting to a hospital? I frowned.

"You have an errand to run, now? Before taking me to a hospital?" I just couldn't think of anything that needed to be done so urgently. Had Marcus hit his head on something? Being inconsiderate wasn't like him. He leaned over, squeezing my arm.

"Yeah. It'll be a quick errand, I'm sorry. You might wish it was longer or more special." What? Marcus looked unsure of himself. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. Was this when I was going to meet his hidden family? I think I hit my head a little too hard on those stairs today, because I was going crazy with worst-case scenarios.

Marcus looked down at his hands, took a deep breath, and then looked back up at me. He knelt on one knee in front of me, holding my right hand, and put his other hand on my thigh. He was careful not to touch my left arm because of my shoulder.

"You know how when you go through something, something that makes your adrenaline spike, and suddenly everything is brought into focus and everything that doesn't really matter goes away and you focus on what you hold dear, and what you wish was reality?"

Marcus swallowed. I think I swallowed too. I knew exactly what he was talking about. I experienced that during the car ride to my parent's house. "Well, I had a moment of clarity today. It lasted several hours- along with sheer terror, of course." He squeezed my hand. "Ryan, will you do me the honor of marrying me?"

I would've dropped my mouth open, except my jaw joint was so swollen I could only open my mouth so far. My eyes widened so much I thought my eyes were literally going to pop out. I had not expected this. I wanted it so bad. I had the same clarity today and realized I wanted Marcus, his doubts about himself and all. I loved him and he was perfect.

"Yes. Yes I will."

That's all I could get out before I started choking on tears, but at least these were happy tears. Marcus wrapped his hands around the right side of my back and gently kissed me. It was a little awkward with the ice pack on the right side of my face, the gauze wrapped around my head, the ice packs on my left shoulder and my wrapped ribs, but we still had a very happy moment. He pulled back and I saw tears glistening in his eyes, too. I was so happy I was smiling with the entire left side of my mouth. This must have been the quickest marriage proposal in history. "What's the errand you have to run before you take me to the hospital?"

Marcus looked guilty. What the fuck? I've had all I can take today. My emotional roller coaster wasn't done for the day.

"Well, I'd like to marry you right now. The reason I want to do so is because Meredith wouldn't let me use the firm's Learjet to rescue you. I could only borrow it if it was a family emergency, so I told her that we had secretly gotten married and you were my husband."

What? We were getting married just because he told Meredith we are already married? My heart dropped so far I swore I didn't even have one anymore. I could not believe this. I tried to pull my hands away, but Marcus held them tight.

"No, no, no. Stop that. Remember what I told you about clarity? Before I had even left to go look for you, before I even talked to Meredith, when I was worrying and calling Lance, and getting the P.I. to find your parent's address, I realized how much I cared for you. Right then and there I thought of you as mine and how much I wanted us together in the future. I realized it then that I wanted to marry you. When Meredith wouldn't let me have the jet, it was no far stretch to say that we were already married. I was planning on marrying you anyway. You just didn't know it yet. I'm really sorry to ask you to do this now in Vegas, at a drive-through chapel," he closed his eyes shaking his head. "But in order to keep my job, let alone stay a partner at the firm, and for you to keep your job, we need to get married before we go back. We're actually in Las Vegas right now."

"You told the EMTs you were going to take me to a hospital in the city?" I didn't know why that's the part I decided to focus on. Marcus gave me a big smile.

"Actually I told the EMTs my plan. They thought it was crazy, but that you would be fine on the flight considering you had been fine while things were going down. So, the Las Vegas hospital will be expecting us."

Oh my God. I was getting married.

The pilots came back to let us know that we were ready to deplane. I looked at Ryan, who was still staring at me in shock. I squeezed his hand and stood up. I helped Ryan stand, then wondered about the airplane steps. Should I be in front of him in case he fell forwards? Should I walk down the steps backwards to catch him in case he fell? Should I walk behind him?

Ryan must've known what I was thinking because he glared at me, then started down the steps on his own. Alrighty, then. I'll just follow him down and catch him if he falls. There was a Billy Idol song in there somewhere. Ryan had no problems at all going down the steps. A rental car was waiting for us at the hanger. I wondered whose brain had been working enough to think of the transportation we needed. I was sure glad I had Bill and Eric along. My brain was completely fried.

We got in the car, with Ryan and I in the back. Ryan was fussing with the ice on his face. "Do you need any help with that?"

"Yeah, I want to take it off. I think my face is sufficiently numb now. Besides it's been driving me up a wall." I helped him take the icepack off but couldn't help my anger when I saw how swollen his face was, along with the bruise. If only I could have five minutes alone with Ryan's dad and uncle. Just five minutes.

"Can you help me with this stuff on my shoulder?"

"It's going to hurt moving those ice packs." Ryan turned to me with a mock glare. Or maybe it was a real glare.

"I'm not getting married with ice packs on." I smiled gleefully because that meant Ryan was still planning on getting married to me. "Don't look so fucking happy. We're getting married in Vegas, in a drive-through wedding chapel." I toned down my smile but I couldn't diminish it completely because I was fucking happy.

I leaned over and very carefully tried to unravel the gauze and move the ice packs. I finally used the knife off of Bill's Swiss Army contraption to cut through the gauze instead of trying to unravel it. There was no need to make Ryan's pain any worse. "I wasn't planning on getting rings before the wedding, I hope that's okay. I can cheap out on the wedding, I can cheap out on where the wedding is, but I am not cheaping out on the wedding rings." Ryan looked at me with glistening eyes.

"If I wasn't in so much pain, I'd think I was dreaming. This has been my dream for years- to get married to you, to be your omega. I'm just so happy." Ryan couldn't talk anymore, as he was choking up on tears. I wiped my eyes as well. There must be a lot of pollen in the city right now. Either that or somebody was cutting onions nearby.

The car pulled into a lot downtown near a government building. Hopefully this wouldn't take long. I gave Ryan a quick kiss and got out of the car to get the license as soon as possible. Fifteen minutes later, I had a marriage license from the state of Nevada. I couldn't believe I was doing this. My mom was going to kill me when she found out how I got married, but she could deal with it. Plus, we'd probably have a big reception at some point. For now, I could only deal with one thing at a time, which was quickly getting married, getting Ryan to a doctor, and then heading back to the city to try and keep our jobs. What a fucking day.

The car slowed down and turned into probably the tackiest place I had ever seen in my life. Ryan giggled and I glanced over at him. At least he thought it was funny. We pulled up to the drive-through window and a man leaned out. "Welcome to the Little Drive-Through Wedding Chapel. What kind of service would you like? Our menu is right down under the window here."

Oh. My. God. Ryan giggled even harder. I turned to look at him, but he pointed at me and kept giggling.

I turned back up to the window and wished there was another way we could get married, without having to go through this drive-through wedding chapel. The menu even disturbed me. You could choose to get married while sitting in the car, standing outside the car, standing outside the car with photos, with the officiant dressed as Elvis, with the officiant dressed as Elvis impersonating Elvis, or with the officiant dressed as Elvis impersonating Elvis and singing Love Me Tender. For an extra fifty dollars, the officiant would cry.

Bill lowered the convertible top, and I looked at Ryan, hoping he would make the decision as to which tacky wedding ceremony he would like the most. He had finally stopped giggling and looked at me with a smirk. "I'm going to let you decide what kind of tacky wedding ceremony we should have."

"I want to do the one where we sit in the car, but do you think he could sing Love Me Tender?" I had my first and only doubts about Ryan, at that moment in time. Then he smiled. "Just kidding. Let's do the drive-through and get outta here."

Oh thank God. I leaned over to him.

"Don't do that to me again. I honestly had a doubt about you right there for a second." Ryan wrapped his hand around my head and pulled me in for a kiss. It was a tender kiss because I wasn't sure how bad his face hurt. Again, I wished I could beat the shit out of his dad and uncle. I pulled back and looked at the officiant. "We'd like to do the drive-through in the car wedding."

The officiant put on a black robe and then performed the quickest wedding I'd ever seen in my life. I could not believe that we were married in ten minutes. Eric and Bill took photos with their phones as we kissed. Even though it was cheesy, tacky, and ridiculous as hell, I was going to treasure this moment for the rest of my life.
