Lawyer's Secret Omega: M/M Non-Shifter Mpreg (Dewey Cheetum & Howe Law Book 1) by Bella Bennet (22)

Chapter 22

Ryan

We were officially married. I still couldn't believe it. Even though we didn't have rings, we had an official certificate. Marcus and I were smiling, and kept looking at each other with goofy grins on our faces. I was so damn lucky to have found him and that he also felt the same way about me.

I couldn't squeeze his hand or anything because I was currently laying down on a bed in the E.R. The doctor came back in the room with my x-rays. He put them on a light-box on the wall. "You don't have any broken ribs, which is good. Your ribs are probably bruised and will hurt up to a few weeks. The wrap should help make them feel better." He took that x-ray down and put up another one.

"You also don't have any broken bones or chips on your mandible or cheekbone. Swelling should go down in a few days and then you'll have a pretty colorful bruise." The doctor glanced over at Marcus, and then at me. "I'm going to need to ask Ryan some questions without you in the room."

I blinked at the doctor and turned to look at Marcus. Marcus's eyes were narrowed and he didn't look happy.

"I'm his husband. Why do you need me out of the room?"

"I need to ask Ryan some questions that I don't feel he would answer truthfully if you were in the room. It's a standard procedure when there are unusual cases."

Unusual cases my ass. He thought Marcus had done this to me! I turned back to look at the doctor.

"My dad and uncle did this to me. We were just in New York. The FBI was there and they took care of things after Marcus rescued me."

"I have the lead FBI agent's business card right here." Marcus handed the card over to the doctor. The doctor looked at us both.

"I'm going to need to verify this."

Then he looked at me and left the room. I turned to Marcus, who was glaring at the now closed door.

"If they were really worried that you gave me these injuries, why did they let you hang out with me in the E.R. for two hours?"

Marcus shook his head and looked back at me.

" I don't know. I guess it's good that the doctors are concerned about people and checking things out, but I can't tell you how mad that accusation made me."

I smiled at Marcus. I felt like I was sending the omega rights movement back into the fifties, but I loved this Neanderthal side of Marcus. I loved every freaking second of it.

The doctor and a few other people came in the room. "I'm sorry I doubted you, but I needed to check this out." He handed the card back to Marcus, who nodded. I smiled because I knew he was still mad.

"Putting your dislocated shoulder back in place is going to be pretty painful, so there's a few things we can do. We can give you a sedative which will require an anesthesiologist and a trip to the O.R. We could give you an anti-anxiety pill, which should make you feel good but won't really knock you out. Or we could give you some ibuprofen, which may or may not take the edge off. Which would you prefer?"

I chewed my bottom lip as I thought. I didn't want to do anything so prolonged as being sedated and being in the O.R., but I sure as hell wanted something more than ibuprofen. With the way my shoulder was hurting right now, putting it back was going to really hurt.

"I'll take the anti-anxiety pill." A nurse handed me a little container with the pill in it. I swallowed the pill with a glass of water.

"We'll be back in 30 minutes so the pill has had time to take effect." I nodded my head, as I got scared thinking of just moving my shoulder, let alone the pain of putting it back. The pill took effect pretty quickly, and before I knew what had happened, I woke up screaming.

"Your shoulder is back in place. We didn't wake you up because this would be easier to do with your muscles relaxed. The pain should be a lot better now that the shoulder is back in place. The nurse will get your discharge papers and instructions. Good luck."

That was not my favorite way to wake up, but at least it was done and over with.

I looked around, but didn't see Marcus. I tried to calm myself down just as Marcus walked through the door. I breathed a sigh of relief and held out my right arm. He came over and gave me a hug. "That was the hardest thing I had to do. Leaving you, standing out in the hallway and hearing you scream. I don't want to go through that again."

I didn't want to tell him that he'd have to go through that again when this baby was born. Actually, when this baby is born he had better be in the damn room with me.

The discharge took as long as you would expect, but finally we were done. They wheeled me out to the car and I fell asleep on the drive back to the airport.

Marcus

We all slept on the way back to the city. I owed these guys so much. I could never repay them for their rescue, but for right now all I could do was give them a slap on the back and tell them I owed them. I tried to get Bill to go home, that we'd get back to the penthouse another way so he could rest, but he wouldn't hear of it. Bill drove us home.

I woke Ryan up to get out of the car. He was so groggy that I had to put my arm around him and walk him to the elevator. We got upstairs and I put him to bed, the first night we were married. I chuckled, shed my clothes on the floor, and climbed into bed. I'd have a few hours of sleep, and then I had to go to work. I made a mental note to have the maid or Bill check in on Ryan during the day, and then I was out.

It was hard to go to work with just a few hours of sleep, and leaving Ryan asleep in our bed, but there was no way I could take today off. I put our marriage license on the nightstand. We needed to get it framed and hung up on the wall. I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, left a note for him, and went to work.

Meredith cornered me in my office soon after I got there. "Did everything with Ryan go okay? Did you find him?"

I nodded, leaned back in my chair and motioned her to close the door.

"I don't want this to go anywhere." I rubbed my face with my hands as I tried to wake myself up. I was going to need another quadruple shot of espresso just to wake myself up this morning. "Apparently Ryan's family has very strict views on things. Someone told them that Ryan was pregnant. It sounded like some relative of Ryan's saw us shopping for paternity clothes last weekend and just assumed we weren't married. His parents and his uncle came up and took him back to their house, about two hours away. Ryan was injured by his uncle." I paused, anger flooding me again.

"What do you mean injured? He's not hurt too badly is he?"

I closed my eyes, took a breath, and then looked back at her.

"His uncle hit him, threw him down the stairs, and dislocated his left shoulder." Meredith gasped and covered her mouth. I nodded my head. I couldn't believe it either. "I also found out that his dad and uncle are both cops in that town, so I'm damn glad I called my friend, from the FBI before we went in. All of us were wearing cameras. A team of FBI agents swarmed the place not long after we got there. It just took a while for them to figure out what had happened. They cleared us, and Ryan went to the hospital." Of course I was leaving out that little detail about the side trip to Vegas.

"Oh my God. His own relatives? That's horrible."

I nodded my head again. I couldn't imagine it. I didn't know how much this was going to affect Ryan, but it was going to be difficult because he lost his family yesterday.

"How long is he going to be out?"

I shook my head.

"As long as he needs to. The right side of his face is still swollen and bruised pretty bad. He probably won't want to come back until the bruise is gone."

Meredith shook her head.

"Unbelievable. How long ago did you two get married?"

I narrowed my eyes at her. There was no fucking way I was dealing with this right now.

"Meredith, I am not getting into this right now. I've had two hours of sleep. I would rather be home with Ryan looking after him, but I'm here. We're married."

Meredith narrowed her eyes at me as if she knew I was covering up the fact that we had only gotten married last evening. Whatever. She finally nodded her head and left without another word. Thank God.

I needed some espresso and I needed it now. "Linda, can you get me a quadruple espresso? Thanks." I normally got my own coffee but I was pretty sure that if I tried to walk right now I might be weaving. It wasn't just the lack of sleep, it was the complete and utter exhaustion from the emotional roller coaster of yesterday.

I managed to somehow get through the day, actually getting work done, without just sitting there thinking about Ryan all day. He texted me when he finally woke up around one in the afternoon. Lucky him. I was just glad that he was home, safe and in my bed. Correct that, our bed.

I got off the elevator to the smell of some delicious food. If Ryan had gotten up and cooked I was going to have words. There was no need for him to cook. He could order anything-

"Hi, honey!" Ryan was sitting in the living room, eating Chinese out of a delivery box with Lance. They were watching TV. The tension flew out of me as I realized Ryan hadn't worn himself out cooking after all. Plus, he had someone to look after him.

"Hey Lance." I leaned down and gave my husband a tender kiss. I still wasn't sure how much his face hurt, and I wasn't going to figure that out in front of Lance. "You have any of that for me?"

"Yeah, yours is in the fridge. Along with crab rangoon.I didn't know what you liked so I ordered the same thing for you that I got for myself." I smiled, leaned down, and kissed him again. God, I should've made a move on Ryan years ago. How had I managed to live without him?

I went to get my food out of the fridge. We had only been together such a short time, but I felt like we had been together forever.
