Left For Dead: Shifters of Alaska Book 3 by Gisele St. Claire (20)

Chapter 20

Olivia rose from the sectional, rushing towards the kitchen to make her way out. She grabbed the door knob of the back door, pulling it open wide, with Isaiah and Alex following closely behind her. “Take a breath, Olivia. Calm down okay?”

She glanced back at him and a wicked grin formed on her mouth. “Oh, I’m calm all right.” She said opening the door and heading for the shed.

The screams echoed through the cold air again. It was a good thing they were on the mountain with no neighbors around, or one would have thought someone was being tortured.

Olivia turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. She walked into the small space as Isaiah and Alex entered behind her and shut the door. She grabbed a stool and sat about four feet in front of the rogue while both men leaned up against the walls.

Her eyes washed over each wrist that was shackled with chains and each led to a brace that was secured to the wall. Her eyes fell to his ankles which were also shackled with chains and bolted down to the floor. Isaiah was right when he said the rogue wasn’t going anywhere.

Olivia’s eyes fell on his. Two dark brown orbs that looked feral in this light, leaving a sick pit in her stomach. The rogue was large, standing over six feet and a stack of thick muscle threaded throughout his chest, arms and legs. A five o’clock shadow covered his jaw line, making him look like a lumber jack. His dark brown hair tousled around his face, with nowhere to go, and no one to move it from his face, it sprinkled itself comfortably wherever it chose.

Olivia grabbed the edge of her seat pulling it another foot closer and then placed both palms on her knees. She tilted her head lower looking straight at him. "I assume you know who I am.”

The rogue’s mouth curled wickedly as he stared at her and then let out a deep low laugh. “Oh yes. Do you miss him, Olivia?”

Olivia bowed her head and stared at her hands. They instinctively clenched into fists and a second later she stood, her hand opened and slapped him hard across the face. She grinned as she watched the blood slowly form and drip from the cut she just created on his lower lip. He hung his head and then spit out blood on the floor in front of Olivia’s feet.

She watched his every move as his eyes met hers again. They were like rivers of fire and it sent a shiver down her body. All she saw was malevolent dark stone. There was no compassion in those eyes. No guilt or sympathy.

She studied him with her eyes. “What is your name?”

“Fuck you!” He growled. His arms yanking at the chains that held him securely to the wall.

Her hand that was curled into a fist at her side swung sideways and connected with his jaw again. She smiled and said, “I’m sorry. Wrong answer!” She watched him close his eyes and shake his head.

“Who else has the C34?” She asked, pacing back and forth. She was on the verge of losing her patience. His head lifted and his eyes were hooded as he stared at her.

She stood in front of him now and her hand slid under his chin. “You do realize the old man made an antidote right? Or maybe he forgot to tell you that part.” She said, letting out a small laugh.

“Oh. Is that what he told you. Are you sure about that? His voice whispered over her, weaving his heady scent of woods and musk. It was an attempt to make her question the drug they had given him. She turned and took a few steps towards Isaiah. Her eyes connected with his and she could feel the rage consume her. She winced as her claws sprung free from her fingers and she could feel the blood drip down them. Olivia whipped around, her arm springing sideways; her claws swinging and slashing against his torso.

Four large open cuts were instantly visible as she watched the blood start to flow down his waist. She watched his face twist in pain and then he opened his eyes a moment later. This is what she wanted to see. Large dark brown orbs that immediately turned to bright amber.

No lime green present anywhere. The antidote worked.

Now the real fun began. There was no chance he would heal faster; he would have to suffer the same fate than any other wolf in his position would. He was trapped in a room with likeminded people that wanted him dead for the atrocities he committed, and there was nothing to hide behind now.

Olivia smiled to herself and retracted her claws. “Oh, I’m sure. I’d bet my life on it!” She crossed her arms and her eyes fell on the cuts on his torso. “Look at that. He bleeds.” She said turning to Isaiah and Alex. She could see by both of their expressions that they were becoming impatient. She turned back to the rogue. “What was the point in killing those innocent people? My father?” She asked in a low and hostile voice, moving closer to him.

She gently ran a finger across his face. Now that there was nothing he could do to show any form of superiority that wasn’t related to his powers, the Rogue stood no chance. She could tease him, play with him and have her fun all the while, he would have to sit and take it. He would have to enjoy being trapped in his enclosure, and only when Olivia decided he would get the sweet release of death.

His voice lowered to a husky whisper. “For the fucking fun of it!”

Olivia didn’t believe it; she couldn’t believe it. Why would this man follow her around, killing innocent people, just for the fun of it? That wouldn’t make sense, there needed to be more to it, and she needed to know the answer.

Somewhere, maybe Rogue found fun in killing innocent people, but not to this degree. He followed her around, taking the lives of those she cared for, or those who trusted enough in her, and he wanted to shrug it off to “fun?”

“What about the wolf I killed?” She asked. If he wanted to play this daunting game, then so would she. Removing herself from the situation, in the way that she would normally find herself reserved to these cruel intentions, this meant nothing to her.

“What?” He asked Olivia could make out the rage that laced his words.

“The wolf, the one you whimpered like a pup over. What was her part in all this? A soulmate? Or was she just some toy to play with, while you waited for the real prize…” Olivia smirked, watching as the rogue's face grew angrier, “Me.”

“You’re a little too arrogant, if you think that’s what this is about,” He replied, this time pulling the chains with great ferocity and the intention to rip them out the wall. Not that he had much chance of doing so; they were bolted on well and secured by Isaiah himself, so there was no chance he would break free. He was angry in one instant, but showed supreme calmness in another, “That is the reason I killed the mutt, after all. Revenge for my mate. I had to take something he loved, for taking something I loved and so on and so forth.” The sound of his voice fluctuated with every passing second.

One moment it was bulky, demonstrating power and ferocity, the next there was nothing but the calm calculative killer behind the words.

She pegged him for a psychopath the moment she initially spoke to him, but couldn’t quite say that rung true. But the way he spoke about what he’d done, and how he did it without remorse, confirmed all her fears.

Olivia sighed and raked her hand through her hair. She turned and shrugged her shoulders looking at Isaiah and said, “Can I just kill this fucking psycho now? We’re not going to get anything out of him anyway.”

“You wouldn’t kill me. I know too much and it’s everything that you’d so dearly like to find out. The secret of life, unlocking Pandora’s Box, the last words your father ever said before he died in between my teeth,” the Rogue said, a sheepish grin growing on his face. He had a backup plan to this, of course, and he knew how he would be able to buy himself more time if necessary. But for now, that would have to wait until he’d finished having more of his own fun.

“What did you say?” Olivia asked, allowing him to get in her head. Isaiah stepped forward, looming over the pair, trying to exert his confidence, but it did not phase the rogue one bit.

“And you, big boy? Tell me about the feelings you felt as you heard that dastardly howl from your mutt? Did the big tough guy weep? Or did you use it to get a free fuck from the girl?” He smirked, “She’s got daddy issues, you know? You should never stick your dick in crazy.”

Olivia turned to face Isaiah, hearing a low growl hum from him. He wanted to say something, he was getting angrier and he wished that she just killed him, instead of trying to break him. He was insane and there was nothing that would be able to stop him from trying to pierce their psyches.

A low chuckle began from behind, with the laughter becoming more and more maniacal in its twisted depravity. It continued onward until the rogue blurted out gleeful explosions of hysterical laughter, which made Olivia snap her head back at him, clasping a hand around his jaw, “Did I miss the joke?” She roared, her strong grasp only tightening.

He looked at Olivia smiling and then his eyes shifted to Isaiah and Alex. “Oh no. Not at all. Before you kill me, I just thought I would let your friends know that Ana and Nelson said Hi.” He hung his head and started laughing like a mad man again.

She watched as Isaiah took two quick strides and grabbed the rogue's neck pinning him against the wooden planks of the wall behind him. He hissed in a deep growl. “I suggest you answer very carefully. Is that a threat?”

“Take it as you will.” He smirked. Olivia watched Isaiah tighten his grip on his throat and then slammed his head into the wall and released. He turned, walking out the door with Alex following him.

Olivia looked at the rogue one last time as she started for the door. Her eyes fell on Isaiah and Alex who quickly made their way back to the house, no doubt to find if the threat presented was real or not.

“Don’t go anywhere,” The joke seemed distasteful in the setting. She wasn’t sure why she made it and knew that in any other setting, she probably wouldn’t have. Maybe it was her nerves, wondering if Isaiah was going to be okay, or maybe it was just because she didn’t know what else to do. Joking had always been a method of coping, and this was no different. She closed the door behind her, following after the brothers, considering all these things.
