Reign Over Me (The Covenant Book 1) by Gwendolyn Casey (16)

Chapter Seventeen

Isabel

“So I heard you had an interesting night,” Sophie said with a little smirk. We were eating our breakfast on one of the picnic tables outside. The weather was perfect, and it was quiet outside since none of the guests had risen from their tents yet. We decided to enjoy it before we had to make breakfast for everyone else.

“What do you mean?” I said.

“Greyson told me that Rem nearly came to blows with the Wraiths’ president over you.” Her eyes were bright like a child’s.

I just shook my head. “Rem was just putting on a show.”

She just kept smiling. “Are you sure about that?”

I looked off in the distance because I wasn’t sure at all. I felt like I was going crazy trying to decipher Rem’s actions. What happened last night, behind the clubhouse, was so intense. But it was over too quickly. I couldn’t hold on to all the nuances of Rem’s face to decide if I saw attraction … or just annoyance.

I definitely felt attraction. In fact, his rough handling turned me on.

What would have happened if Jordan hadn’t come outside? Was he going to kiss me? Or was he just gearing up for a lecture?

I thought I’d felt his arousal against my backside, but now I wasn’t sure.

I looked back to see Sophie still staring at me. “I don’t know, okay?” I said with an exhausted breath.

“Well, I know that Rem wants you.” She looked me dead in the eye, and there was no hint of sarcasm.

“How?” I asked.

“Honey, he looks at you like a hungry wolf.” She said it like it was obvious. “I saw it the first day you were here.”

My first day? The day he snapped at me? “What?”

“Why do you think I pushed you to get on birth control?”

I simply gaped at her. I was on the pill because she was guessing that I would be having sex soon.

“It was so you would be protected when that man decided to bend you over the nearest surface.”

I let out a breath to calm my erratic thoughts. This was too much.

After a moment, I said, “First of all, thank you for looking out for me.” She smiled. It was actually nice to have someone thinking of my best interest. “Second, how could you trick me like that?”

“I didn’t know if the feelings would be returned. Also, my excuse was valid. Women living in close quarters often get on the same cycle.”

Just then Max and Hawk came outside. They both had their shirts off and were headed toward the ring.

“Another disagreement?” Sophie called out to them.

“Yep.” Max called back but didn’t stop.

“Disagreement?” I asked.

“Whenever Max and Hawk have a disagreement they like to settle it in the ring.”

“That seems a little extreme.”

She shrugged. “That is Max and Hawk.”

“So they are pretty close, huh?” I asked, ready to stop talking about Rem.

“Oh yeah.”

“Are they gay?” I whispered.

“No, but they do like to share.”

“Share?”

“Their women. They rarely take a woman alone.”

“Oh.” So that was why I’m supposed to hang with both of them tonight. The whole club must be aware of their inclination.

I was surprised but not offended. I guess that might be pleasurable. But looking at them now I wondered how one woman could handle both at the same time. I mean, I get the logistics, but the intensity of both of them seemed overwhelming. Especially Hawk. That man didn’t say two words to me, but I could always feel his strength somehow.

“Do you know why they share?” I asked without taking my eyes away from them.

“Not sure. I’ve always been curious but too shy to ask.”

“Hmm.” Maybe I would ask them tonight.

“I’ve got to call home before we start breakfast,” Sophie said as she got up from the table and went inside.

We still had a little time before the food had to be ready, so I decided to finish my breakfast and watch the match.

Whatever they were fighting about must have been serious because neither was willing to give in. Max was taunting Hawk, saying little comments that I couldn’t make out. But Hawk didn’t lose his cool and kept his assault steady. Max was more mobile around the ring but didn’t land as many blows. I could tell they were evenly matched so I wondered, what was the point?

They finally stopped when Max’s phone buzzed and he said, “That’s time.” They were both sweating and had red marks where they’d each landed hits.

Hawk simply left the ring and went back inside without looking back.

Max watched him leave but didn’t follow.

“Who won?” I asked as he climbed out of the ring.

He looked up as if he was surprised I was still there. He came over, sat beside me, and leaned back against the table. “No one ever wins.” He still looked angry and worked up.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

He just smirked at me, as if no one had ever asked him that before. “It was just about the future. I know what I want, but Hawk is not so sure.”

I gave him a slow nod.

“So what do you want?” I asked, trying to dig a little deeper.

“A wife and kids.”

I decided to stay quiet because I wasn’t sure what my next question would be. If Max and Hawk were serious about sharing than finding a wife would be difficult. How would they even go about that? Maybe they have dating website for that sort of thing?

He must have guessed my thoughts because he said, “Yeah, it’s complicated.”

“I can only imagine,” I said with a blush.

He smiled back at me. “So about tonight, how do you feel about Halo?”
