Taking Chances by Laura Farr (26)

Mason

Six months later

I paced up and down the cabin, nervously waiting for Libby to get ready. I patted my pocket for what felt like the millionth time, feeling the outline of the ring under my fingers. Hearing Libby coming down the stairs, I quickly dropped my hand. “You look beautiful, sweetheart,” I told her, as she stood in front of me in a short skirt and cowboy boots, my hands itching to touch her bare thighs. I watched her cheeks flush as I complimented her, six months into our relationship and my words could still make her blush. My dick twitched in my pants as my eyes tracked up and down her body, she was so beautiful, and I intended to show her just how beautiful I thought she was later. I’d show her now, but unfortunately, that would make us late.

“Come on let’s go, everyone will be waiting.” I reached for her hand, leading her outside to my truck. We were heading into Marble Falls for a meal, her parents were visiting, and they were meeting us there, along with Claire, Ryan, Savannah and Brody.

We’d been living together for the past six months, and short of sounding like a soppy bastard, they had been the best six months of my life. Everything was falling into place, Libby had been offered a place at the University of Texas to study English Literature and she was loving it. The nightmares from the car accident were, fortunately, getting less frequent, and Amber had heeded my warning and stayed away. Everything was perfect, well almost, it would be by the end of the night if everything went as planned.

I opened the truck door for Libby and helped her in, my hand brushing her thigh. I watched as goose bumps broke out on her leg and her breathing hitched. I smiled to myself, loving how responsive her body was to me.

We drove in a comfortable silence into Marble Falls, my hand tightly clasping hers. She no longer got anxious when travelling in a car, but that didn’t stop me from holding her hand, any excuse to touch her. “You’re quiet.” She said, squeezing my hand. “Everything okay? You’re not nervous about dinner with my parents, are you?” She asked laughing.

I smiled. “No baby. Your parents love me.” I flashed her a cocky grin, making her laugh even more. I had been nervous to see her parents when they’d first arrived, but only because I needed to ask them for their daughter’s hand in marriage. They had been at the ranch for a little over a week, and I’d finally managed to get them alone yesterday, wanting to speak to both of them, thankfully they had happily given their blessing.

I’d had the ring for months; I’d known pretty early on that Libby was it for me. When I’d found out that she’d left me and gone back home, I was devastated. I knew that I had to do whatever it took to get her back; I was always sceptical that Amber had been pregnant with my child, I’d always been careful. I would have fought with everything in me to get Libby back, baby or no baby.

Everyone was aware of my plans as I’d needed their help to set up the surprise that I’d planned for after the meal. Thankfully dinner went off without a hitch, and no one let my secret out. I couldn’t eat any of my meal, I was so nervous. Fortunately, Lib had sat chatting with Savannah and hadn’t seemed to notice. As the night came to a close, her Mum started to get teary, and I took that as my sign to leave before Lib started to suspect.

We said our goodbyes, and I noticed her Mum and Dad hugging Libby tightly. Having spoken to them yesterday, I knew how happy they were that Libby seemed to be back to her old self. Of course, she would never forget Mia, but she was managing to move on with her life.

As we pulled back into the ranch, I drove straight past our cabin towards the lake, which had become a special place for both of us. I saw Libby look around as she noticed we’d passed the cabin. “Where are we going?” She asked looking over at me.

“Wait and see,” I told her with a wink. A few minutes later we were nearly there. “Close your eyes Lib,” I asked her.

“What? Why?”

I laughed. “Please, just close them.”

“Okay…” She smiled curiously at me.

As I stopped the truck I could see fairy lights twinkling in the tree we always sat under, along with hundreds of rose petals scattered on a blanket that was underneath the tree. Savannah and Libby’s Mum had done an amazing job; I’d have to remember to thank them later. “Keep your eyes closed baby, I’ll help you out of the truck.”

“Okay.” She said again, a huge grin on her face. I made my way around to her door and reached my arms around her waist, lifting her out of the truck and lowering her gently to the ground. I kissed her nose and turned her around. “Open your eyes,” I whispered in her ear, her body trembling as my breath tickled her neck.

“Oh my god Mason, this is incredible!” She cried, spinning around to face me. “Did you do all this?”

“I may have had a little help,” I admitted. “Do you like it?”

“I love it.” She stood up on her tiptoes and brushed her lips against mine, I pulled her against me, circling my arms around her. I nibbled on her bottom lip with my teeth and waited for her to open up to me, my tongue plunging into her mouth as she did. Deepening the kiss, I heard her moan and her hands, which were wound around my neck, pulled on the hair at the base. I pulled out of the kiss, not wanting to get carried away just yet. I led her over to the blanket, positioning her so that she was standing surrounded by rose petals. “This is so beautiful.” She gushed.

Holding her left hand in mine, my heart pounding, I reached into my pocket pulling out the ring. As I dropped to one knee, I heard her gasp and her other hand came up to cover her mouth. “Libby, the moment I met you I knew that we belonged together, I knew that it was only a matter of time before we got to this point. I promise you that no one will work harder to make you happy, or cherish you more than I do. You make me so happy baby, and if you let me, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make you as happy. I love you, sweetheart. Will you marry me?” Tears were running down her cheeks as she looked down at me.

“Yes.” She whispered, nodding her head. “Yes, I’ll marry you.” Her face broke out into a breath-taking smile, and I slipped the ring onto her finger. It was a perfect fit. I brushed my lips over it and stood up pulling her into my arms. She threw herself into my body hugging me tightly. “I love you Mason, more than you’ll ever know.” I leaned back slightly and touched my lips to hers.

We lay down on the blanket, her hand clasped tightly in mine as we stared up at the stars. We’d faced some obstacles to get to where we are now, but there was no doubt in my mind that I had found my soulmate in Libby, and I knew she felt the same. I would spend the rest of my life loving her, never letting her regret that she took a chance on me, a chance on us.
