Nemesis (Creation Inc Series Book 6) by BJ Cunningham, Misty Clark (19)

Chapter 22

Brian followed Reese's direction and headed to The Bridge to find Rycker Svenson. Brian had never met the male, but had heard a lot about him. He wondered if the man was going to be a huge nerd. Brian tried to picture him as he approached the door to The Bridge with his large plate of food in hand.

Rycker's fingers flew over the keyboard as he plugged in the newest events into the program he's designed to track any out of the norm event that was texted to him. His col blue eyes bounced between monitors as patters began to emerge. His fingers stalled for a moment and his brow arched at Syn's request for a cell phone for the Dragon that had been moved inside the manse last night. He added a not to his schedule to get with the dragon to program his door lock and because he was a dragon, probably explain the safe. He paused long enough to wonder if he was profiling the dragon before deciding that he didn't care. Movement on the wall of monitors drew his attention as the guitar player for The Violent Offenders made his way down the long hallway with one of Maggie's care package. One corner of Rycker's mouth curled up in a satisfied smile as he typed in the code that not only unlocked the door, but swung it open as well. It was creepy as fuck until you got used to it, but came in handy when your hands were full. Absently he listened to the some reporter drone on and on about the military building a presence in NOLA to keeps its fine citizens safe. If they only knew, he snorted.

The door to The Bridge swung open as Brian got closer. It freaked him out a bit, but then Reese did she Rycker would see him coming. He walked through the door an once inside it closed behind him. "Rycker Reese told me to come talk to you. Maggie sent you some breakfast and lunch too. There is a shit ton of food on this plate." The bear said looking around the room. It was full of monitors and other techno things Brian had no idea about. It reminded him of the eighties movie The Last Starfighter, but with updated computers. He kept that thought to himself. He was pretty sure if Rycker could kill him with a button push if he wanted.

Rycker watched the bear. He was babbling and that was a little weird, but weird was their wheel house. He adjusted the bandana that held his long dark hair from his face and lifted up just enough to see what was on the plate, before holding his hand out for it as he mindlessly entered more of texts that streamed into his phone into the proggy. "Thanks. Whatcha need?" He glanced at the bear ans took a bite from a piece of toast.

Rycker was ruggedly handsome. Not at all what Brian had pictured. He assumed a skinny guy with him coke bottled glasses and a pocket protector. The thought made Brian laugh. Rycker's brow arched. "Sorry just thought you'd be different. Anyways Jared is missing. He got sucked into the ground not to far from his own house. War some how appeared and sucked him under ground."

Rycker chewed his toast and arched a brow at the bear's nervous laugh. "Yeah, most expect Urkel, but this ain't high school." Not that he'd know, he'd never gone to a brick and mortar school, but he'd seen it on the tube. "Jared. Surly ass Panther with the feisty little blonde mate, right?" He pulled up the particulars for the Morgans, and Serra's living room filled monitor nine."Where and when?" He held the toast with his teeth as he waited with both hands ready. His eyes crinkled slightly with amusement when the bear's jaw hung open at seeing his friend's mate was under surveillance. "Don't worry. We don't have one of these on you. not yet," he smirked, joking.

Brian shifted his weight a little nervous. "A few days ago. If you can see his house its the side with the huge hole blown in it." Brian had back track to the house by himself to try and do something, and saw the large hole in the ground. "Yes that's Jared. He's married to Damion Mangus daughter."

Clicking the keys, Rycker directed one of his tiny drones to do a flyby over the property, his eyes narrowing at the destruction as he logged in the information. He'd seen this somewhere before. Tapping the arrow keys, images of destruction flashed across the multiple monitors as his cool blue eyes scanned them. Using his booted foot, he slid a stool on wheels toward the bear. "You're nervous is making me nervous. Have a seat and tell me what's up." His lips curled up in a satisfied smile when he found what he was looking for. An almost identical hole in the ground that the locals were calling a sink hole in Cali. He dragged the photo into his search box and soon all relevant news coverage and some not so relevant was filtered onto a few of the screens. Ry turned to look at Brain and remembered that he still had toast in his mouth, so he took a bite, chewed and tossed the rest back onto the pale. "So why the nerves?"

Brian took a seat. "Honestly I don't know. I just have a lot on my mind. Lack of sleep or some thing maybe. Did you find anything?" He asked trying to relax. In all honestly he wasn't sure why he was nervous. Maybe it was because technology intimidated him. Brian did his head to keep up on things, but sometimes he just decided it wasn't worth the hassle. When it came down to it a computer couldn't do what your bare hands could do in his mind.

Rycker watched him silently for a moment and then pointed to the first column of monitors on the wall. Something almost identical happened in Cali, along the San Adreas fault 2 days ago at what would have been noonish our time. Some reported seeing a pale rider on a white horse. I'm betting a shitload of cults out there just downed a couple gallons of kool-ade over that." Ry hit a couple other keys and all of the monitors worked together to piece together a map of the globe, with red lines intersecting at different points. "And these are all volcanoes that aren't as dormant as they were two weeks ago." He used the mouse to point at them. "The green line are lay lines. They've remained unchanged for thousands of year, but the past few weeks, they are moving, to align with the red. I'm not sure how it all fits, but the pattern is forming. Do you see anything? Maybe looking at it from another POV, music, or what have you, you can see something that I don't?" The bear was tech struck, and the quickest way to get him over it was to give him a way to relate.

Brian thought a moment. There had a been an eclipse a while ago. The effect from that could of done something to the earth or maybe he was full of shit. Either way it couldn't hurt to say anything. "I'm not sure if I'd be much help, but did you think about the eclipse that happened a bit ago? The gravitational effect it might of had on some of this stuff. Can you track all that back to point in time? I mean the lines changing color an all that?" He said waving his hand at the screens.

A quick search pulled up the stats of the eclipse and added the info to the algorithm, an bale blue line appeared and showed them the changes through time elapse. "It's not conclusive, but I'm not ruling it out. I'm missing something and if fucking Dane is right and it's some rockin bass line, I swear I'm gonna puke." He snorted and chewed on a piece of bacon as he let the time lapse loop, his brow arching when he noticed that there were spots that the lines jumped over, as though they were protected. "What the?" Rycker narrowed his eyes.

Brian looked at the screens and tried to follow what Rycker was doing. "I'll kill him myself if this is some kind of weird guitar hero bullshit. Red, blue, yellow, green my big furry ass." Brian said thinking about Dane. "What all did Dane says? I'm not sure what other stuff I can tell you. Other than the weird shit that happened to me that made Salvation think I'm doing a shit job for him." Brian sighed.

"I can't add what I don't know about, so you might as well spill it. I've always wondered what the enforcer gig was like. Salvation doesn't seem as warm and fuzzy as the Boss Lady." He smirked and pulled up a window to add into and also pulled up the exact position of the piece of swampland Reese had bought not so long ago. The plot turned a pale yellow on the map and a he sat back with a grin when the three lines jumped over the spot without touching it. "Gotcha," Rycker whispered and turned to the bear. "So what happened?"

Brian ran his hands through his hair before telling him what happened. "Salvation sent me out to bring him two males that were killing humans. I found them an everything. They kept talking about some creature or whatever calling it IT." Brian rubbed his hands on his pants a moment. "The males were two wolves and when I found them they were pulling apart humans like you'd debone a chicken. They had a huge pile of parts and other gross things. The sky opened up and this thing appeared it had dragon skin and a eagle head. I called Salvation in for backup. When he got there, everything had vanished. He thought I was fucking with him. Needless to say he's not happy with me at all. But I know I'm not bonkers. I saw them, and I smelled the human flesh an death that was there. I've heard other stories of people seeing things and then they just vanish like they were on a bad acid trip. I'm still waiting on Sal to punish me or something for my fuck up." Brian said with a sigh. He added that to the list of shit he was afraid of. That creature he saw was something out of nightmares. And the smell of it. His stomach started to turn thinking about it.

"What were you supposed to do? Disappear with them?" Rycker scoffed and shook his head, his eyes crept back to the map. He pulled a sticky note pad closer and wrote his number on it. "If you can hit me with anything else you notice that would help a lot. Accurate time is better than vague. Who knows, Maybe the furball is right and it's some cosmic sound track to oblivion." Rycker shrugged and eyed the bear. "You know where the panic buttons are at The Pit, right? Hit one and we're there. Eyes on the inside would be better, but they aren't feeling cooperative."

Brian took the paper from Rycker when he handed it to him. "I don't know I guess take the two males in, but its hard to do with that things in the air and then they all poofed. And if Dane is right I hope the song comes out to be something cool. And not I'm a little fucking tea pot or some shit." Brian said standing up. "I'm the official eyes and ears in The Pit now. Reese asked me if I'd do it." Brian had to remember where the buttons in The Pit where. "Right panic buttons. I have never hit one thought about it a few times just to see what would happen. Like the school fire alarm." He laughed. "Thanks again for taking the time to talk to me. If I think of anything else I'll let you know."

Rycker chuckled. "If you can't get to one a call or 911 text to me will do the same thing. Like storming the beaches at Normandy. Stop by anytime. It's too damn quiet down here most of the time." He held his fist out for a bump.

Brian fist bumped him. "I'll do that. And the next time you come to The Pit let me know I'll make sure to buy you a drink. Or just tell em to put whatever you get on my tab."

Rycker grinned and nodded, turning back to the map.

Brian stepped out the door that opened and closed without him touching it. He ghosted himself back to The Pit outside of his truck. He thought about having a talk with Dane about his thoughts on the world ending to some soundtrack of doom. The lion took to many hits to the head, but then he was British that explained it all. Crazy limey bastard Brian thought laughing heading inside to check on things.
