Chapter Nine

Princess for a day

Chad put whatever his family thought about Quisha on the back burner and pursued her aggressively. When he wasn’t at work he was on the phone making arrangements for them to go out and enjoy each other’s company. In a strange way he was settling down and didn’t even realize it.

“I’m going to Miami next week. I want you to go with me,” Chad said. It was the first time he’d ever included her on one of his many trips.

“What will I do while you’re in business conferences?” she asked.

“You can go sightsee and we’ll do something in the evening, or you can wait for me and enjoy the amenities of the hotel, then we can go out in the evening,” he said.

“Sooo, are we sharing a hotel room?” she asked.

He chuckled.

“Do you want to?” he asked.

She gave him a sly smile.

When their plane touched down in Miami, they took a limousine to their hotel room. She opted to stay in the room until they could go out together. He looked at his watch.

“I’ve got to be at the meeting in thirty minutes, so enjoy, and I’ll be back later this afternoon. Here.” He handed her some shopping money and was out the door before she could respond.

She enjoyed the other side of life, playing rich for however long she could. Chad spared no expenses. The hotel room wasn’t cheap, and neither was the food she ordered while he was away for a few hours.

After about an hour she was bored and decided to do some shopping to pass the time. She went outside, hailed a cab and went the nearest shopping district.

Two hours later she was back at the hotel with her purchases. She mentally pinched herself as she dumped the contents of her bags onto the king-sized bed they would share. Never in her life would she have imagined this would be her life.

She always felt independent, wanted to be independent and buy all of the things in life she wanted, but something about this knight-in –shining-armor awoke that princess dream that every young woman had within, even the ones who fought the idea of being taken care of. Excited, she called up Tamla.

“Guess where I am?” she said into the phone.

“Where?” Tamla asked wearily. She was happy for her friend, but didn’t want to hear about it constantly.

“Miami,” Quisha said.

“Why are you there? Did you elope or something?” Tamla asked.

Quisha laughed. “No. He’s on a business trip and asked me to come along. I just spent five thousand dollars on clothes. Can you bel—” she was cut off.

“Quish,” Tamla started. “You caught me at a bad time. I have to get off,” Tamla lied.

“Is everything ok?” Quisha asked.

Tamla didn’t answer right away.

“It just seems like the only time you call me now is to brag about your good fortune with your beautiful hunk,” she finally said.

“Do you think I’m bragging, Tam?” Quisha asked, a little upset that she was giving off that vibe. “I thought I was sharing my good fortune with a close friend,” she added.

Tamla sighed heavily.

“I’m just going through some things. I’ll talk to you later.” she said and hung up.

The wind was let out of Quisha’s sails by Tamla, who didn’t want to revel in her temporary happiness.

Two hours later Chad was at the hotel and found Quisha looking at, but not watching the TV. Her mind was somewhere else.

“Hi,” he said. “Went shopping I see.”

“Yeah,” she said without thinking.

“Everything ok?” he asked and walked around the side of the bed where she sat.

“Yes, everything…no, I had a disagreement with a friend. She accused me of showing off,” Quisha explained.

Chad laughed. “Were you?”

Quisha furrowed her brow. “No, at least it wasn’t my intention. I mean, as I told her I was just talking to her and expected her to be, never mind,” she said and stopped.

“Now you see why my inner circle is relatively small. It’s a fluke that you made it into it,” he said and kissed her forehead. She looked up at him slightly surprised at the tender gesture.

“It’ll be alright,” he said, looking at his watch. “It’s still early. Let me take a shower, grab a quick bite of something and we can head out.”

Later that evening

Chad had taken Quisha to one of his favorite Miami clubs. A lot of the famous pretty people were there. It felt surreal and Quisha couldn’t believe she was rubbing elbows with some of reality TV’s most popular celebrities—people she’d talked about and was envious of and yet she was there in their mix.

Chad put a possessive arm around her and maneuvered her into the throng of people, introducing her every so often to people he had a passing acquaintance with. That night they danced, ate and bonded.

Back at the hotel, Quisha slipped off her dress and kicked off her shoes as Chad watched.

“You looked beautiful as always,” he said and got up from his reclining position on the bed and went to her.

“Thank you,” she said. He gently massaged her shoulders before turning her around to face him. They kissed as they peeled off their clothes. The Miami city skyline at night added to Quisha’s fantasy of being made love to by a rich man as R&B baby-making music played softly in the background. Of course she didn’t expect it to be with a White man, but it only made the fantasy more intense as she came. She dug her nails into his back as her orgasm gripped her.

A week after Miami

Chad, Bryan and Gretchen met for lunch at Bryan’s house. “Mom has to talk to us about something,” Bryan said.

“What about?” Chad asked, perplexed by the urgency in his brother’s voice.

“I don’t know,” his brother responded.

“Mom told me last week she had something very important to talk to us about,” his sister Gretchen finally spoke up.

A feeling of dread hit the siblings; it was the same tone that was used when their father was dying eight years earlier.

“Chad tell me the truth,” Bryan asked. “Who is Quisha, really?”

“Is she blackmailing you? Did you get her pregnant? Why are you with her?” Bryan continued.

“Now that we’re on the subject, why exactly are you with her?” Gretchen chimed in.

“Why is this any of your damn business?” Chad retorted.

“It’s our business when you bring shame on this family,” Bryan replied.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“You know exactly what I mean. Dad would disown you if he were still alive,” Bryan finished.

“Both of you need to just mind your own business,” Chad said before getting up from the kitchen table. He’d heard enough.

“Our main concern needs to be on why Mom needs to talk to us,” he added and left.
