Joshua was on the job site when Kyle arrived in Africa. Ben had met with his plane and drove him into the site so that he could meet with Joshua. “It’s a pleasure meeting you as well.” Kyle turned his attention back to Joshua. “I need to debrief you on the situation back home. Can we speak in private?”

“Yes, of course.” He glanced at Caroline, noticing that she looked puzzled.

“I will catch up with you later on, okay Caroline? Enjoy the rest of your lunch.”

She only nodded, not saying a word. Joshua immediately thought it was a little weird for her to behave that way, but he decided to let it go. He wanted to talk to Kyle and find out what was going on in New York during his absence. That for the time being was more important. He could speak with Caroline about everything later on. He walked away with Kyle, leaving her at the table to finish her lunch.

“So Kyle, what do you have to report? I hope you have some good news for me.”

Kyle looked him over. “You look really good man. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so relaxed, even after a normal vacation. I have to say Africa has done wonders for you. How’s the stress levels?”

“I don’t have any stress here, which is exactly what I needed. It was a good suggestion to come here and lend a hand. It certainly has done me good to get away from all the stress of being accused of poisoning the ocean. I’m happy to be away from that shot for the time being.” Joshua wasn’t sure what was making him happier, working at the site or the fact that he had met Caroline. Imagine he had never gone to Africa and therefore had never met her. He couldn’t even imagine such a thing. Was the whole thing fated? He wasn’t sure that he believed in things like that.

“Well, I’m glad to hear it, man, you deserve a break. You don’t need to worry about anything; you are going to walk away from this whole thing unscathed.”

“That’s what I like to hear; so tell me, what’s going on? Is there any news?”

“Well, firstly, I came to tell you that you need to be finished with your work here no later than a few weeks, and that’s whether the hospital is completed or not. I know you wanted to be here to see them both completed, but you need to be back in two weeks for sure.”

“Why?” Joshua didn’t like the fact that he was going to miss the completion of the hospital; there would be a real celebration after that one, and he was hoping to host it. But maybe they would get lucky and be able to finish the hospital in time as well. With both teams together, they just might be able to. Plus, he had not spoken to Caroline on what was going on between them and what it would mean once he left. He couldn’t imagine being gone in two weeks and leaving her there. It would be weird not having her around, these days they basically spent every waking hour together.

“Well, you need to appear in front of the court for the criminal charges the prosecutor is putting against you. So like I said, whether the hospital is completed or not you need to be ready to go.”

“What the fuck, Kyle. I am not going to jail for the better part of my life because the Arctic Ocean was poisoned. You told me you were going to handle this.”

“Joshua calm down; you don’t need to get upset.”

“Don’t tell me that I don’t need to get upset Kyle. This is my life.”

“I know, and you aren’t going to jail. This is all going to go away, I promise you. This will all be swept under the rug, and before you know it, everyone will be back to thinking you’re an amazing man. Which you are, of course; this is just a stumbling block. We are going to be back on top.”

“That would be fantastic Kyle, and I’m expecting you to make sure that it happens.”

Joshua and Kyle continued walking through the camp so that Joshua could show him what they had been doing with the school. The whole time, neither of them had noticed that there had been a person walking behind them.
