Beauty Exposed (Zoe’s World Book 1) by Lillianna Blake, P. Seymour (8)

Chapter 8

“You don’t like it?” I frowned as I climbed into the car. “I know it’s a little flashy, but you didn’t have to take the whole site down just because you didn’t like it.”

“I didn’t take anything down.” He chuckled. “But I’m pretty sure you did.”

“What?” My heart began to race.

“Everything is wiped. We need to get the site back up as soon as we can. So, what exactly did you do?” He coughed, but it sounded like he was covering up a laugh.

“I don’t know what I did!” I started the car. “I just changed some colors and pictures. I didn’t delete anything, I promise!”

“Yes, you did. Because it wasn’t me. Where are you? Can we meet?”

“I’m at Common Grounds and I’m just leaving. Do you want me to wait for you?”

“Do you have your computer with you?”

“No, I don’t. I’m sorry, Trent, I don’t know what happened.”

“I’ll meet you at your place. We’ll get it all figured out.”

“I’ll just go home and grab my laptop and meet you back here.” After the way I felt around him the last time we were together, I didn’t want to be home alone with him.

“I don’t know how long this will take to fix. If it works for you, I’ll meet you at your place.”

“Okay.” I frowned. How could I deny him? If he was right, if I’d somehow wiped everything from the website, he was probably going to be furious. I would be, if I were in his shoes. No, I couldn’t make where we met an issue; it would only make things more tense. As it was, he might not want to work with me anymore. Why would he want to work with someone who was obviously was so stupid when it came to tech stuff?

The thought made my head spin. I had never thought of myself as stupid, but clearly I was when it came to this.

As I drove home, I tried to think of what I’d done on the website. Was there a moment when I’d accidentally deleted something? I was certain there wasn’t. I’d been very careful about it.

When I pulled into the parking lot, Trent’s car was already there. He stood beside the front door, with his hands in his pockets and his eyes on me as I approached.

“Hey, Zoe.” He pointed to the door. “What happened to not deleting anything without my permission?” His eyes narrowed and his lips tightened into a stern line.

“Look, I don’t know what I did, Trent, really I don’t, I’m sorry—”

“Hey, hey.” He laughed and rubbed my shoulder as I unlocked the door. “Don’t get upset, I was just teasing you.”

“You were?” I fumbled with the keys and managed to get the door open. We went inside. “I still have no idea what I could have done.”

“It’s alright.” He sat down in front of my computer.

“That’s it?” I stared at him. “It’s alright?”

He glanced up at me even as his fingers flew across the keys. “What else should I say?”

“I don’t know. That I’m an idiot?” I sank down into a chair beside him.

“I would never say that.” He narrowed his eyes as they met mine. “And it could never be true. Mistakes happen, Zoe. Honestly, it’s my fault for not monitoring the site. I got distracted last night and I didn’t check it until this morning. When I did, it was gone.” He licked his lips as he looked back at the screen. “Let me try to figure this out.”

“Okay.” A wave of guilt passed through me. Because of something I did, he was going to have to put in more time on it. Still, the fact that he wasn’t upset with me surprised me. I would have been pretty livid if I’d been in his shoes. “All I did was change some things. I wanted to add more color and some images. I never thought it would cause a problem. I actually got to the menu on my own and thought I was doing well.”

“You were.” He flashed a smile in my direction. “I like the initiative.”

“How can you be so calm about this? I ruined everything.” I frowned.

“Now that’s a bit dramatic, isn’t it?” He raised an eyebrow as he glanced at me. “I mean, everything is a very broad term.”

“Stop it!” I laughed. “I’m serious.”

“That’s your problem, you’re being too serious.” He reached out and patted my knee. “You can’t do anything to the website that I can’t fix, got it?”

“Got it.” I instinctively pulled my knee back as heat rushed through my cheeks.

“What’s up with you lately?” He stopped typing and turned in his chair to face me.

With his full attention on me, it was hard to look away.

“Just busy with the business—hoping to really ramp it up. Which clearly I’m not doing a very good job of, because now I’ve deleted everything.” I sighed.

“Are you sure that’s all it is?” He folded his arms across his chest.

“I’m sure.” I clenched my jaw and tried not to notice the probing way he seemed to dive right into my mind.

“Okay.” He nodded once, then turned back to the computer. “Try not to stress about this. I think I know what happened, and don’t worry, I saved a backup of the site. It’s not as bad as I thought it might be. Sorry if I scared you.”

“Oh, that’s a relief!” I smiled. “So what did I do?”

“I’d guess that you were editing. It auto-saved when you were doing that, which removed the content from the published page, but you didn’t actually hit the publish button, did you?” He looked over at me.

“Since I didn’t know there was a publish button, probably not.” I shook my head. “I never should have been messing with it. I’m sorry for making more work for you, Trent.”

“Nope. Not a problem. And I want you to mess with it. I want you splashed all over that page, because it’s not the business that draws in customers, it’s you and your vivacious personality.” He brushed his hair back from his eyes as he looked around the room. “It’s like this place. I step in here and it’s like I’m surrounded by you.”

“You think?” I swept my gaze around the walls and furniture. “Some people say it’s too much.”

“No, it’s perfect.” He looked back at the computer. “Just like you.”
