Beauty Exposed (Zoe’s World Book 1) by Lillianna Blake, P. Seymour (19)

Chapter 23

I clapped so hard my palms hurt as I looked up at Samantha. There was nothing more amazing to me than the success that she had created for herself and the influence she used to help others at every turn.

I noticed that Trent clapped just as hard. He seemed genuinely thrilled to be there.

“Hi, everyone, thanks so much for your warm welcome.” She smiled out at the crowd.

“Tonight is a very special night for me. I’ve had quite a few adventures since being published, but being honored by this particular group means so much to me. Women for Women is a charity that I’ve been supporting since long before I put words down on paper. What I love about this organization is that they don’t limit their support of women to just this country. They extend their support to countries all around the world.

“It’s no secret that women have a difficult time becoming successful in business. There are still many barriers to get through in order to achieve the dreams we desire, and support makes the biggest difference. I am lucky enough to have such an amazing group of friends that have always been there to support me when I needed it.”

She smiled as she met my eyes. “And I do my best to be there for them as well. I hope that everyone here is inspired to do the same, because as a community, we can make such a powerful change when we unite. I know this evening is about women in business, but a truly supportive community will encompass every person in it. We can’t forget about the men who have supported us along the way and whom we have supported as well. Without the support of my wonderful husband, I’m certain I wouldn’t be standing here tonight.”

She took a deep breath as she looked out into the faces in the audience. “But he wasn’t always my wonderful husband. Long before that, he was the best friend I could ever have. Friendship comes in so many forms, and I believe it is the most valuable thing we can ever possess. So after we enjoy the festivities this evening, I hope that every one of you will remember to treasure those friendships and whatever blossoms from them.”

I noticed that she looked directly at me—perhaps at Trent as well—as she continued.

“The best advice I can give anyone, at any point in their lives, is to keep an open heart. We all buy into limitations so easily. We let society define who we are, and then we try to live up to those roles. But our hearts are what dictate who we truly are. So keep yours open. Open to new ideas, to adventure, to love in whatever form it arrives in. Life is waiting for you.”

A loud round of applause greeted her final words. I joined in, as did Trent, whose eyes were wide with interest. I could tell that the speech had meant something to him.

Samantha’s words had been incredibly moving to me. I realized that no matter what happened in the future with Trent, I wanted to keep my heart open.

I felt his hand touch my back as the audience began to file out into the aisles.

“I can’t thank you enough for bringing me along tonight, Zoe. It was so great to hear her speak in person.”

“It was great to have your company.” I waved to Samantha as she made her way through the crowd to us.

“Wait for me in the cafe, I want to have a drink with both of you. It’ll take a me a few minutes to finish up here.”

“Will do.” I kissed her cheek. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” She grinned before she was swept away into the crowd.

I led Trent to the cafe and we sat at one of the empty tables.

While we waited for Samantha to join us we chatted a little about the website, Samantha’s books, and the things we enjoyed about them. I relaxed and felt more comfortable around him. The coldness he’d shown me the last time we’d met seemed to have vanished and I was relieved to know that we could still spend time together.

“Sorry it was such a long wait. I didn’t expect to have so many people to meet and greet.” Samantha grinned as she settled into a chair with us at the table.

“You gave an awesome speech.” I smiled at her. “I’m so glad I was able to be here.”

“Me too.” Trent offered his hand. “I’m Trent, a friend of Zoe’s. It’s an honor to meet you.”

“Oh, I know all about you, Trent.” Samantha grinned as she shook his hand.

“You do?” He glanced over at me, then back at her.

“Sure. Zoe brags about your skills all the time.”

“Guilty.” I grinned.

“Well, thanks.”

“I’m always happy to meet someone who likes my work, but honestly, any friend of Zoe’s is a friend of mine. You’re a lucky person to count this lovely lady as a friend.”

“I agree with that.” He smiled. “I consider myself very lucky.”

“Aw, stop.” I picked up my drink and tried to push down the butterflies in my stomach. “I’m the one that’s lucky. I wouldn’t even have a website if it weren’t for you.”

“You might.” He grinned.

“I don’t think so.” I shook my head. “Anyway, we’re both glad to be here, Sammy. I can’t think of anyone who deserves the award more than you do.”

“I can. You.” She smiled as she looked across the table at me. “I’ve already nominated you for next month’s award and the committee has accepted the nomination. You’ll receive a letter about it, but I wanted to be the first to tell you.”

“What? But I’ve barely started my business. I certainly don’t deserve an award.”

“Next month’s award is for new businesses that have an impact on others, and yours does just that. The work you do inspiring women is really incredible.”

“It really is.” Trent nodded as he looked over at me. “You know, I read a lot of the e-mails and comments that come through the website. It’s really powerful what you do for them.”

“Thanks.” I could feel my cheeks growing hot. “It is my passion.”

“There will be a lot of other people considered for the award, but I’m rooting for you, Zoe.” Samantha raised her glass in the air. “To true friendships.”

“Absolutely.” I raised my glass as well and looked over at Trent. “I’m so grateful to have such great friends.”

He smiled and raised his glass to join the toast.
