Hollywood Dreams (Hollywood Hopeful Book 1) by Molly O'Hare (7)

Chapter Seven

Thankfully, Trevor wasn’t needed on set at the butt crack of dawn the next morning. Which was a rare occurrence. So, he took full advantage of it and leisurely made his way to Perk You Up. When he got there; however; he was confronted with the accusing eyes of his favorite barista.

“Hey, sweet cheeks,” he said, as he walked up to the counter. “Why the long face?”

Lexi huffed as she narrowed her eyes at him. “What makes you think I’m not still upset with you for being rude to one of my customers?”

Trevor fought the urge to roll his eyes. Could he not go five minutes without being reminded of Maggie? Last night after he realized he wasn’t getting his way with Matt, he took a shower, and she immediately made her appearance again, and his stupid dick took notice. When he’d heated up some leftover food, he’d ended up picturing her sitting across from him as she nibbled on some fruit - topless. Something was seriously wrong with him.

Annoyance crawled through him. He should have known better than to show up at Perk You Up. “I thought you said best friend yesterday?” he remarked.

Lexi’s face lit up before she turned on her heel and started making his drink with a stupid pep in her step. “Oh, best friend indeed,” she nearly sang, which annoyed him more. “That girl is a-w-e-some. Horrible taste in food, but a hell of a lot of fun. Did you know she can mimic or impersonate someone only after meeting them for a few minutes?” She turned back and handed him his drink.

Trevor held the cup a little tighter. “No. I didn’t,” he spat, with irritation.

“Well, she can. I actually didn’t know she could until we got to the hotdog place on Rosen. You know the one with the crazy eccentric cook that talks with his hands and so fast you can’t understand him?” He assumed she wasn’t really asking him because she kept talking.

“We get our food and all of a sudden she’s impersonating him. She was great at it. I could swear I was watching him right in front of me… Well, you know except for the fact that he’s a crazy old dude and Maggie’s got a vagina. But putting that aside it was amazing.”

Instantly after hearing the words Maggie and vagina, his mind went to her beneath him, in front of him, or on top of him. He had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from moaning.

“Within minutes she was impersonating everyone. I’d throw out a name of someone and boom! Man, her impersonations are spot freakin’ on.” Lexi looked him up and down before winking at him. “Should have heard her do you. I almost peed myself I laughed so hard.”

Trever now even more annoyed, placed his coffee on the counter. “Sounds like you two got very chummy. Don’t know why? She seems like someone that would just annoy the shit out of you.”

“Nope,” Lexi said. “That’d be you.”

“You know,” he responded, before reaching for his coffee. “You used to be my favorite barista. You’ve recently been demoted.”

Lexi held her hand over her heart and threw herself onto the wall behind her. “However, will I live?”

Trevor narrowed his eyes. “You know you should have been an actor with all your dramatics.”

“Then who would be here to serve you the best damn cup of coffee you’ve ever had?” she asked moving over to the baked goods, retrieving a blueberry muffin and handing it to him.

He growled. “I take it back. You’re the most annoying person.” He turned to leave, his coffee and treat in hand.

“You’re only saying that because you know Maggie spilled all the beans. I never pictured you only packing a small pencil.”

The coffee cup dropped from his hand, collapsing onto the floor before he turned around.

Today was supposed to be a relaxing day for Maggie. She was going to take some much needed time to regroup. She ended up having a lot of fun last night with Lexi. It was good to get out of the apartment and actually be in civilization doing normal things rather than, getting up, going to an audition, then going back home to hang out with her cat.

Unfortunately, her plans we derailed around ten. Danny called to inform her she was needed on set at 11:30. Apparently during the last part of filming something went wrong and the footage was no good. Most of the scene was salvageable, however, the end was not. Rather than just cutting it all together from the film Danny asked her to come in and re-film.

Maggie was a little hesitant, though. Sure, she wanted to film again. What actor wouldn’t want to be on set? That wasn’t the problem, she just really didn’t want to run into Trevor again. Seeing as he was the star of the film, the likelihood of him being there was pretty large.

After about a five minutes Danny had convinced her that she’d be done and off set before Trevor would even showed up for the day. His call time apparently wasn’t until four.

After having a debate with her loud mouth, very opinionated cat, she finally completely gave in. So, what if she did run into Trevor. It’s not like she didn’t know how to handle him. Well… kinda.

“We really appreciate you coming back,” Matt mentioned to Maggie as he looked at the footage from the take she had just finished.

“Not a problem.” Maggie smiled, as she cleaned off the drink liquid from her hands with a towel.

“I didn’t want this scene to be cut, so I mean it.” Matt turned from the screen to her. “Are you coming to the fundraiser? It’s to support keeping arts in schools.”

“Yes, I know. Danny was telling me about it. I am going to try my best,” she lied. There was no way she was going to the fundraiser. After speaking to Danny more in depth about it, she realized how big it really was. It was a way for the film to get some publicity while also giving back. No expense was too much.

Danny mentioned the last one he went to had received over two million dollars in donations alone. Everyone who’s anyone was going to be there. Which sucked for her. The nicest outfit she had in her closet was the black dress she wore to her grandmother’s funeral. Even then that was only a forty-five dollar dress.

From what she was gathering the fundraiser was going to be the “it” event of the year. Like, the Oscars big. Her forty-five dollar dress was not going to cut it. And she had no funds to buy another one. At least not one that would work for the event.

She was hoping Danny would forget about asking her to go to the fundraiser. She sure as hell wasn’t going to remind him. Plus, it wasn’t just that she didn’t have a dress, she was sure Trevor was going to be there. She didn’t need him singling her out and making rude or derogatory comments in front of potential casting directors.

Trevor being the dick he was, she was sure he would do whatever he could when he got the chance to make her life a living hell.

“It’s in the contract you signed,” Matt said. “Even though it was a small part all cast and crew are invited.”

“I understand,” Maggie replied. “Thank you again. I really am going to try my best and make it.”

“She’ll be there, Dad,” Danny said, walking up to them. “You all set?”

Maggie looked back at Matt. “Yup. We just finished.”

“Great. Sorry I wasn’t around to see you throw the drink again. I needed to get some other things done with B-Crew. How was dinner with Lexi?”

“It was just what I needed, Thanks for having her call me. We had a lot of fun. Somehow, we ended up at a hot dog place. Best damn hotdog I’ve ever had.” She rubbed her belly remembering the taste. “I could have eaten ten of them.”

Danny laughed. “If it’s the one on Rosen. Hell yeah! That place is legendary. The cook’s a little… weird. But the hot dogs make up for it.”

She instantly went into her impersonation of him. “Weird? You think I’m weird? You take this hot dog and you like it!”

Danny threw his head back roaring with laughter. “Holy shit, Mags. That’s impressive.”

“Thanks,” she said. “It’s a weird talent I have. I can impersonate or mimic people after watching them for a few moments.”

“No shit. Really?” He beamed at her. “Do me.”

Maggie shrugged. “No shit. Really? Do me,” she said mimicking him exactly as he had done.

“Damn,” Danny laughed. “I didn’t know you could do that.”

“It’s not that big of a deal,” she said, laughing. She loved it when people found enjoyment out of her weird talent. When Lexi found out last night, she kept throwing names at her.

“Sure, it is. Why isn’t that on your résumé? That could actually really help you.”

“You think?” she asked. It had never occurred to her that she should put it on her résumé.

“Uhh, yeah. I mean an actor résumé has a spot called “special talent” what did you think that was?” he questioned looking at her surprisingly.

“I don’t know. It’s just something weird I do.”

“Put it on there. Trust me.”

“Alright, fine I will,” she said as she threw her backpack over her shoulder.

“I’ve gotta head back to the green room. Are you good to walk out on your own?” Danny asked. She could see the apology in his eyes.

“Yeah,” she answered. “And, if I get lost I’ve learned my lesson on opening doors. I’ll just come back here and ask someone.”

Danny smiled. “Text me if you get lost.”

“Will do,” she said as she turned to head out the door. However, before walking out she turned back. “Lexi said something about us all hanging out sometime. Would you be free sometime?”

Danny cocked his head to the side as he grinned. “For you two, I’m always free. Plus, Lexi is a fuckin’ riot. She’s amazing.”

Maggie briefly looked him up and down. When he’d said Lexi’s name there was something that flashed through his eyes. Was there something between Lexi and Danny?

Truth was, Maggie herself had gotten a girl boner every time she was with Lexi. She didn’t know if it was from her stunning looks or her out of this world coffee making ability. Either way, she could see why Danny might like her. There was absolutely something there with Danny and Lexi, and she was going to find out what it was. “I’ll text you later. See ya, Danny.”

Maggie turned back to exit with a bounce in her step as she made her way to her car. “I wonder if Lexi likes Danny?” she mumbled to herself. Maybe Danny could ask Lexi to the fundraiser?

Pushing the thoughts aside, she made her way to the car, throwing her backpack on the passenger seat before she got in. It was a hot day in LA and unfortunately, her car did not have working air conditioning. She rolled down the windows and hoped for the best. Putting her key in the ignition she turned it.

Turns out her air conditioning was not the only thing that didn’t work.

“Come on. Please don’t do this to me?” she said looking at the ceiling. “Universe, if you love me at all you’ll have this car start.”

She turned the key again.

Nothing.

“For fuck’s sake!” She slammed her hand against the steering wheel in anger. When the horn went off she jumped. “Are you yelling back at me?” she asked accusingly.

“Are you talking to your piece of shit car or yourself?”

She turned to see none other than the bane of her existence.

Trevor pulled into the lot, early. His call time wasn’t until four but after his inopportune conversation with Lexi, he wasn’t in the mood to go back home. When he’d turned back after her last remark to him, she was doubled over in laughter. Lexi was actually laughing so hard, she snorted. Which just pissed him off more.

After calling her a bitch, he threatened to ruin her even if she did have the best damn coffee on the whole west coast, he then tried to leave. Before he could take a step towards the door, she’d looked him up and down and accused him of having a chubby every time he saw Maggie. At first, he panicked. How in the hell would she have known that? This had gone too far, and he was going to put a stop to it.

Unfortunately for him, he forgot how ruthless Lexi really was. After arguing with her and failing miserably, which resulted in him walking out annoyed. She had the gall to holler at the top of her lungs, “Get it boy!” as he stormed out.

She wasn’t getting a tip tomorrow. Nope, he didn’t care how good the food and coffee was. No tip for her!

On the drive to the set, he did everything he could to try and calm down. Instead, he only got worked up more. Of course, Lexi would know his dick had caught some weird disease and responded whenever Maggie was around. Lexi fucking knew everything.

Great. Now that Maggie and Lexi hang out, the first thing probably out of Lexi’s mouth would be how I get a chubby looking at the chubby girl.

“Fuck!”

He turned down the road to the soundstage and groaned. “What the fuck is she doing here?” He was already pissed, and now he had to deal with her again. He hadn’t stopped thinking about her since that goddamn first day and now here she was. Again.

He got out of his car and stormed over to where she was parked, ready to give her a piece of his mind when he heard, “For fuck’s sake.” She then slammed her hand down causing the horn to sound. She looked accusingly at her steering wheel. “Are you yelling back at me?”

He heard himself chuckle then shook his head banishing the foreign emotions when it came to Maggie. He made his way over to her window. “Are you talking to your piece of shit car or yourself?” He observed as she looked at him, then dropped her head to the headrest and looked at the roof.

“Screw you, universe, and all your cosmic universe-y shit you do. I must’ve really, really fucked up in a past life.” Maggie finally turned to him, before speaking, “What do you want, McCain?”

“Why are you here?” he asked, instantly going for the “show her your pissed” demeanor.

“Going for a fucking stroll. What do you think I’m doing here, on a film set?” She got out of her car pushing him out of her way.

He watched as she made her way to the front of the car and popped the hood. “You know your car is a piece of shit, right? Is it even safe to drive?” he asked walking to the front of the car to stand next to her.

She peered around the hood, narrowing her eyes at him. “A regular Sherlock Holmes, now aren’t you?”

“No need to be snippy,” he remarked. He was surprised when he heard the cheer in his voice. It was nice to see her struggle. Although, he didn’t understand exactly why he wasn’t a fan of her driving around in this death trap.

“No need to be snippy? You’re a piece of work, you know that?” she accused.

“From where I stand your car is the one that needs work.”

Maggie looked up at the sky. “I know murder is wrong, but what if it’s someone who really deserves to die?”

“Are you trying to murder me?” he asked, as he faked being appalled.

She turned to face him. “Trust me, if I was trying to murder you, you’d know it.”

Ignoring her response, he asked, “What’s wrong with this rust bucket that you call a car?”

“Don’t you have somewhere you need to be?” she countered, her eyes clearly telling him to get lost.

All that did was make him chuckle, he was glad he was getting under her skin. “Not for another few hours.” He shrugged. “That’s enough time to watch you struggle for a while. I’m sure if I call Danny, he’d get me a chair and a drink.”

She started to physically shake before she turned to him. When he saw the unshed tears in her eyes, he instantly felt liked he’d been punched in the stomach.

What the hell?

Why was his first reaction to bring her into his arms and tell her it was going to be okay?

“You know until a few days ago I thought you were the coolest guy. I had all of your movies, posters, hell I even had all the magazines that featured you. I thought you were so talented…” She turned away and looked at her car. “Now,” she said, looking back at him. “I just hate you…”

She moved to the passenger side of her car, as she retrieved her phone and punched in some numbers. “Hello. Yes, my car broke down,” she talked while she started to pace. “Really? That long? Umm okay. I don’t really have a choice now do I?” She moved to the front of her car again closing the hood as she listened. “And how much is that going to cost?... Shit. Are you kidding me? That’s freaking highway robbery.”

He didn’t know what came over him but he moved for her cellphone grabbing it out of her hand.

“Hey!” she yelled.

He disconnected the call throwing the phone back onto her seat. “You don’t need to wait for them. I’ll take care of it.”

“The hell you will!” she said, through clenched teeth. If he was easily intimidated he would have actually been worried. Thankfully, he wasn’t. He knew she wouldn’t do anything. Not to him. She was nothing but a mousy little girl, trying to act all big and bad. Plus, she’d just admitted he was her idol. He smiled at that. Damn right he was her idol, he knew no one could dismiss him.… He’d made sure to gloss over the part she said about hating him…. In all honesty, he hated her too. Kinda.

“I will,” he said. “Get your stuff. I’ll take you home and call my guy to come get your car.”

“Hell no!” she screamed. “Who the fuck do you even think you are?”

His eyebrow raised. “I’m the guy trying to do something nice for you.”

“No, you’re the guy who makes fun of my weight and my acting. You’re the guy that tries to cut me down every single time you’re near me. What in the hell are you smoking to think I would actually get into a car with you? Not if my life depended on it,” she said reaching into her car to retrieve her phone.

“If you pick up that phone I will place you over my knee and spank your ass.” He couldn’t take back the words once they were out.

She stilled.

He didn’t blame her. He was frozen in his own shock. What the hell did I just say? Great going, Trevor. Why the fuck did you say that? Now he had pictures of her laying across his lap, her ass in the air. Let’s not forget that his poor confused dick took instant notice.

“I’d really kill you then,” she sneered.

Might as well go for broke.

“I mean it, Maggie. You pick up that phone and I’ll smack your ass here and now. I’ll make your life a living hell.”

“You already make my life a living hell,” she sneered. “And, if you even tried it I would murder you.”

When he saw the glistening in her eyes again he took a deep breath. Maybe a different tactic could work here. “You’re right.”

Her mouth opened in shock as she stared at him.

“I know that in LA everything is more expensive than it needs to be. My car guy is great, he won’t over charge you. Plus…” He looked down at his watch. “I have a few hours before I even need to be here. I can take you home and make it back in time.”

“What’s in it for you?”

If I do this maybe, just maybe you’ll get out of my head. Plus, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget the tears you had in your eyes when you turned to face me. He cleared his throat. Don’t think like that! You hate her. “I get to annoy you with my presence on the way to your place. That’s enough for me.”

She looked at him, then back at her car. He thought about it, she really had no choice but to take his offer. Well she did, she could always call Danny or Lexi her new best friend. A part of him wanted her to think of those options, but for some strange reason, a bigger part of him didn’t want her to realize that.

He got his way when he saw her shoulders slumped in defeat. She grabbed her bag from her car and shut the door. Without saying anything else, she nodded. He didn’t even try to hide his smug face as they walked across the lot.
