Protect Me - A Steamy Bodyguard Romance (You Can't Resist a Bad Boy Book 5) by Layla Valentine (78)

Chapter 13

Violet

I’ve lost my mind. That’s the only possible explanation.

After a night of barely sleeping, I sit at the kitchen table staring out at the backyard. Seven hours of rolling around in bed and two cups of coffee later, and I still feel like the living dead.

Since Frank left last night, I’ve picked up my phone at least six times to call Sean and tell him off. In the end, though, I only texted Kaila and told her I was taking a sick day—something I never do.

Today’s an exception, though. It has to be. If I don’t deal with what’s on my mind, I’ll implode.

Sighing, I go to my bedroom, yank off my pajamas, and pull on some jean shorts and a fresh white T-shirt. I must have scrubbed a layer of skin off in the shower the night before. After Frank left, I still smelled him on me. But the part that I hated about that was the fact that I loved the smell. Every time I inhaled, I remembered the way he’d pinned me to the wall and banged me silly.

So I scrubbed even harder.

Now, though, as I make the half-hour walk back to where I left my car last night, I have to face the truth: it’s kind of hot to have two guys making a bet over me.

That doesn’t make what Frank did okay. Not at all. Trying to get a woman pregnant without her consent is absolutely insane.

I myself don’t know what I was thinking last night. It had to have been the alcohol. I made Sean get tested, and then I turned right around and went bareback with Frank.

Loony. That’s what it is.

But it’s also kind of hot.

And, okay, if Frank does get me pregnant, fine. Maybe it’s good. I needed a backup plan anyway, just in case my one time with Sean didn’t do the job.

Last night, I wasn’t even thinking about getting pregnant. All I knew was that a hot man was in my house, and I wanted a piece of him.

This morning, I’m warming up to the idea…kind of.

I need to talk to this guy. To both of them. After they answer my questions, we’ll see where this goes.

As I park alongside their apartment building, the craziness of the whole situation hits me. Am I really going to do this?

Apparently so, because I’m marching up the walkway and hitting the buzzer.

“Hello?” comes Frank’s voice.

I clear my throat. “It’s Violet. Can I talk to you?”

A long moment passes.

“Hello?” I ask.

The buzzer sounds, admitting my entrance.

I rush up to the guys’ floor, my heart pounding. There’s a big part of me that’s dying to turn back around, but the rest of me needs to see what will happen next.

At their door, I knock before I have the chance to turn tail and run.

The door whips open right away. Frank is there, grinning wide, his dark hair damp and standing on end. I’m not gonna lie; I would really like to get my hands in there.

“Well, hello.” Somehow, he smiles even bigger.

“Is Sean here?”

Just as I say his name, Sean appears from his bedroom. His eyebrows go up at the sight of me.

“Violet. What are you doing here?”

“I had to talk to you both.”

Their faces both somber up, and they exchange a quick look.

“What the fuck did you do, Frank?” Sean asks.

“Hey! Why do you think it was me? She said she wants to talk to the both of us.”

“Right,” I say, pushing past Frank and letting myself in.

They join me in their living room, Frank sitting down on the couch and looking as chill as he can, feet up and fingers laced behind his head. Sean bounces on his feet nearby, arms crossed. For some reason, seeing he’s also uncomfortable makes me feel a little better.

I take a long breath. I didn’t prepare a speech, but maybe I should have. I have a feeling I’m going to be stumbling over a lot of words.

“First of all, you guys are assholes.”

“We’ve been called worse,” Frank quips.

“Frank,” Sean hisses. “Shut the fuck up.” He turns his eyes on me. “Is this about…”

I wait, but he won’t finish.

“You can’t even say it, can you? It’s about the bet that you placed on me.”

Sean purses his lips. He’s ashamed. Good.

Behind me, Frank speaks up. “To be fair, we placed it on ourselves, not on you. It’s to see who can get you pregnant first.”

I rub my tired eyes. “I know what the bet is, Frank.”

“Frank, just shut it for a minute,” Sean growls.

I glare at the man in front of me. “You’re not innocent either, Sean.”

His nostrils flare. “Violet, I didn’t mean for you to get hurt.”

“Well, that’s what happened.”

His shoulders slump, and he won’t meet my eyes. Though I expected this moment to feel good, it’s a punch to the gut. After everything we’ve been through, including all the years apart, seeing Sean hurt is painful.

I close my eyes and press my fingertips to my lids, creating stars in the darkness.

“Do you want something to drink?” Sean asks. “Stay. Have a seat.”

I open my eyes. “Sure. Water would be great.”

Frank pats the cushion next to him. “There’s a spot right over here, Violet.”

I take it, aware of Sean’s eyes on us as he gets me a bottle of water. Frank notes it as well, and sends his own aggressive glare Sean’s way.

The muscles between my legs tighten, and I have to shift my weight on the cushion. If there was any doubt before, there isn’t now. Two men fighting over me is definitely a turn-on. It doesn’t even matter that it’s the stupid bet that’s important to them, and not me.

Sean brings me the bottle of water and sits on the coffee table across from me.

“Thanks,” I mutter.

All eyes are on me as I take a long drink and screw the cap back on. “So.”

Sean nods.

I look over at Frank. “I wanted to kill you last night…both of you, actually.”

“Do we have to apologize again?” Frank asks.

“You didn’t apologize once.”

“Oh.”

“As I was saying, this whole bet thing is dumb and pretty disrespectful. But…”

Sean shifts closer, listening intently.

“But?” Frank repeats.

“I’m willing to go along with it.” Before either one of them can respond, I hold up my hand. “I want you guys to show me which one of you is more worthwhile of being my sperm donor.”

Frank’s face wrinkles. “Huh?”

Sean looks equally confused. “How?”

I shrug. “If I knew that, I’d just pick one of you.”

“Violet,” Sean starts, “I might have already gotten you pregnant.”

“And I might have,” Frank points out, his chest puffing up.

“But maybe neither of you have.” I give them each a long look. “So, who am I going to pick to do the job?”

Frank and Sean look at each other at the same time, and I can nearly see their competitive streaks growing.

“Figure it out.” I stand up. “Find some way to show me you’re worthwhile.”

“Wait.” Frank pops up from the couch. “I have today off. Come shooting with me.”

“Hold on.” Sean is between us in the blink of an eye. “You can’t just hog her time like that.”

“I can do anything I want.” Frank grins.

They’re so close I’m nearly sandwiched between the two of them, my shoulders brushing both their chests. I bite on the inside of my lip to stop a smile. If they know how much I like this, it’s not going to be nearly as fun. Or successful.

“I’ll go,” I tell Frank. “I’m free.”

Sean growls like a feral dog. “Tonight,” he says. “You’re mine.”

“I’m busy tonight.” It’s true. I have a dinner meeting with a new artist.

“Tomorrow, then,” Sean quickly says.

His green eyes catch mine, and the intensity there makes my breathing hitch. I quickly look away, though. Sean’s always had a way of both getting under my skin and making me come undone. I’m through with letting him do either one of those things.

“Text me,” I tell Frank. “I need to go right now.”

It’s not true, but being so close to both of these guys at the same time has me feeling dizzy. I’ve never slept with two guys in such a short amount of time. Not that it’s something I’m opposed to. It’s just…new.

Like everything else in my life right now.

I leave faster than I came in, my hands shaking, my heart pounding, my stomach churning…and a smile pulling at my lips.
