She Was Mine: An Incapable Novella by Marie Skye (2)

Emmalin

A nanny? Hell, I was thankful when Hawkins’ mom stayed with us a few weeks after the twins were born. Now, we have a part-time nanny and a housekeeper that comes three times a week. You wouldn’t believe how much it’s helped me.”

I crossed my arms glaring at Gwen. Gwen is one of my best friends. We met when she started working at a café, I worked at, and I was training her to be my replacement. It didn’t take long to realize, we enjoyed each others company. About a year later, and a string of assholes, Gwen opened her eyes to Hawkins, head of Grayson’s security detail. I like to think I deserve all the credit for the two of them falling in love and getting married, and eventually becoming parents to identical twin girls. Poor Hawkins. He, also has two identical twin sisters, and nieces. He’ll always be outnumbered, and will never win. Ever. Gwen, actually thought about getting a male puppy, just so there was another pair of balls in the house.

“That’s because you have twins. You’re supposed to be on my side.” I started to realize how petulant I was sounding and sat in one of the twins’ bean bag chairs.

Gwen smiled as she handed me the bottle of wine. “I am on your side. Always on your side, but Grayson’s right, hun. He wants you to take better of yourself, and you can’t do that if you’re busy working or taking care of Emersyn.”

I sighed. “I don’t know why this has to be an issue. Thousands of women do it. Why should I be any different?” My phone buzzed with another call from Grayson. I stood up. “I should go. I just left Grayson and Emersyn and didn’t even tell him where I was going.”

Gwen walked me to the door. “Oh, I’m sure he knows.” Yeah, she was right about that. I gave her a hug. “Kiss those girls for me.”

I finally made my way back home. It wasn’t even noon yet, and I was already hating this day. Just like I’ve always hated it in the past. Yeah, maybe I was overreacting and should’ve heard him out. We also, wouldn’t have to depend on Magda as much, no matter what she said. I sighed as I leaned my head against the wall in the elevator. Dammit. He was right. Bastard, knew it too. Begrudgingly, I made my way inside. When I finally stepped foot into our condo, it was quiet. Too quiet. I went to Emersyn’s room, thinking maybe Grayson laid her down for a nap.

I peeked into her crib. It was empty.

“Meredith stole her.”

I jumped at the sound of Grayson’s voice behind me. “Why? She didn’t need to do that.”

Grayson casually strolled into the room. “Because I asked her to.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m sorry about earlier. If you want us to have a nanny, then that’s fine

“Is it?” Grayson cut me off. He crossed his arms as he studied me. “I brought it up, because it would be to help. I’m not home as much as I like, and that kills me. I’m missing out on Flick growing up. I don’t see you as often as I should.” He ran his hand thru his hair.

Ever since Grayson’s company took on more projects, he’s been even busier now than ever. He finally looked back at me. “I shouldn’t have to schedule when I want to fuck my wife. That’s not the kind of relationship I ever wanted to have.” He stared at the ground, lost in thought.

“Was having Emersyn so soon a mistake?” His head snapped up to mine at my words. “Maybe, we should’ve waited, or been more careful, or I could’ve gotten on birth control…” He reached me in two quick strides.

“Having Emersyn was not a mistake. I wouldn’t change having her for anything in the world. She’s a part of both of us. I guess it’s safe to admit that I wanted you pregnant sooner.”

My eyes widened at his admission. He shook his head. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s true. The moment I had you bare, I wanted you pregnant. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I took you to an abandoned warehouse, because I was furious at the events that happened that day, and the next thing I knew, I had you up against a brick wall, fucking you as if my life depended on it. In fact,” He lifted me up, and I wrapped my legs around him. “I think we need to work on getting you pregnant again.”

He carried me to our bedroom. “Grayson, you know…” I trail off.

“Yes, I know. But it doesn’t mean we can’t have fun trying.”
