Girl For Rent: A Dark Romantic Comedy by Dark Angel (42)

Jennifer

I feel as if I’m in seventh heaven as we leave the movie theatre. Once again, we didn't watch much of the movie as we spent too much time getting busy in the back row.

I laugh. “There’s something about giving a BJ at the back of a movie theatre that makes it even more satisfying.”

Jason exaggerates by making out that he’s pulling up his pants. I hold onto his hand telling him to stop, I'm worried that people can see us, then I realize that I don't care. We always go to a theatre out of town, somewhere that we're sure that no one will recognize us. It gives us the chance to be free and feel like a real couple. Not like two people that are doing something wrong. There's nothing wrong with the time I spend with Jason. Everything about it feels so right.

He smiles. “I’ll say.”

We both laugh as he takes my hand and we leave the theatre. After all this time, I’m not bored of him, and I think that he feels the same way. It’s as if the more time we spend together, the more I crave him. We told each other we love one another, and that seems to have opened up a window of opportunities. I’ve never felt this way about a man, and I can’t help but walk around with a big smile on my face.

“Oh, fancy seeing you two here. Again!”

Bethany shouts out as we approach my car. Jason and I are holding hands, but the moment that Jason sees her, he drops my hand instantly. It’s as if her words scare him so much that he does it automatically, but not on purpose. I didn’t even see who was talking, but wondered what was going on in my confusion. Whenever we’re meeting up, we always go to a different town, and Jason parks his car at the gas station, and we both ride to the restaurant, movie theatre or wherever we’ve decided to go out for the night in my car.

“Bethany, what are you doing here?” Jason snarls at her.

I can tell that he’s annoyed at her presence or what she said, maybe a little of both. Is she following us? This can't just be a coincidence that she's here at the same time.

“Just taking a picture! Now say ‘Cheese.'”

Jason shakes his head, “Is that what you’re doing here. Taking pictures?” She nods her head proudly and then draws closer to Jason, while my confusion silences me. I’m sure that Daniel’s seeing Bethany. Jason told me that’s why Daniel’s always out. I started to panic as I ignored their conversation and expected Daniel to pop up any minute. Then again, if she was with Daniel, they’d be walking together. Daniel’s not the type to hide in the bushes or anything like that. Then again, there are no bushes for him to hide in.

I turn to tell Jason that we need to leave. Daniel already has some animosity toward me, if he found out that I was seeing Jason, he may never talk to me again.

“Jason, let’s get out of here!”

I tug on his arm, but he’s too busy looking at photos on Bethany’s phone. She came out here to show us photos?

“And this one is with you leaving Jennifer’s house at midnight. One in the morning. Oh and here are some shots of you naked in her house, just walking up the stairs casually.”

I peer over her shoulder to see the photos that she’s showing him, forgetting about my fears that Daniel’s hanging around somewhere.

“Oh, and here’s one of someone in the shadows creeping out of your house. And here’s…”

Jason dismisses her with the wave of his hand, his vein looks as if it’s about to pop out. “You been following me. But you’re seeing Daniel. Besides, it’s none of your business.”

I don’t give her a chance to reply back as my voice trembles as he says Daniel’s name. Where is he? He must be here with her, that must be why she’s taking the photos. So, that Daniel can come out and tell me that he knows and probably will never speak to me again. I want to tell him, but not like this. He needs to hear it from me, not her.

Bethany looks as if she has fire in her eyes as she turns to face me.

“I can’t believe that you’re sleeping with him. It’s fucking disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself, a woman of your age taking advantage of a boy. One that’s the same age as your own son. If you don’t leave your toy boy alone, then I’m not only going to tell Daniel, your son! But Carla too!”

Wow, she’s going for gold. Not only is she willing to break-up her relationship with Daniel, but she wants to destroy my friendship with Carla too.

“Jennifer, let’s get out of here,” he says dragging my hand toward the car so that I’ll open the doors.

My hands start to shake as Bethany waves her finger in the air.

“I mean it, Jennifer. Leave him alone. You’ve been warned!”

Jason replies by saying, “Fuck off!”

Bethany hesitates for a minute trying to think of something to say. I run to the driver side opening the door at the same time. I feel as if my heart’s beating out of control as I start the ignition and Jason hops in the car. I can see by the corner of my eye that she’s taking another photo of the pair of us sitting in the car. I don’t care as Jason gives her the finger and I drive like a bat out of hell.
