I’d never made the drive home so fast, and Cole was right behind me. He wrapped his arms around me from behind and started kissing the back of my neck while I fumbled with the keys unlocking the door. As soon as we made it inside, Max came running up to us. Cole bent down and rubbed Max's belly when he rolled over with his legs in the air.
“You’ll be his new best friend now,” I told Cole.
Cole smiled up at me. “Well, that’s good cause I plan on spending a lot of time with his dad.”
“I think that can be arranged,” I said.
Cole stood up and wrapped his arms around me before giving me a soft, lingering kiss. “So, where’s your bedroom?”
He let me go and I took his hand, pulling him down the hall past the kitchen to my room, and I shut the door once we were inside. Cole raised his eyebrow in question. I pointed to the small nose sniffing under the bottom of the door. “Didn’t figure we needed Max trying to hop in bed with us right now.”
Cole laughed. “Good thinking.”
I took his hand again and led him over next to the bed. Reaching down, I took hold of the hem of his shirt and pulled it over his head, then Cole did the same with mine. Next, I removed his pants. “Commando.” Cole just grinned in response. “I like it.” With my hand on the back of his neck I pulled his mouth to mine, kissing him and exploring his mouth with my tongue. I loved the roughness of his skin against mine. I pulled away and pushed against his chest. “Lay down.”
Cole lay on his back and put his hands under his head. My eyes went to the hard dick touching the muscles that line the bottom of his torso and I had to taste him. I jumped out of bed, woken by Cole’s screams. He was thrashing in the bed, covered in sweat, and it looked like he might be crying. My heart broke for him in that moment because I was certain that whatever nightmare he was having was of the real-life variety; a memory that he couldn’t escape and would never be able to change.
I needed to wake him up, but I knew I needed to be careful. If I tried just shaking him awake it might make things worse. Waking up from a nightmare, especially one that you’d lived through, could be difficult to say the least. I walked around the bed to his side and got on my knees on the floor next to him. “Cole,” I said quietly. “Cole, baby, wake up.” I slowly reached out and ran my hand gently over his hair, and then I moved it down to his face and softly ran my thumb back and forth over his jaw. “Baby, you’re just dreaming,” I said a little louder. “Wake up.”
Cole’s eyes flew open and I could see the fear in them shining back at me. I wiped away his tears and he sat up and reached for me. I got up and got back into the bed with my back against the headboard and I pulled him to my chest and wrapped my arms around him tight. His shoulders began to shake, and I couldn’t hold back my own tears as they fell down my face. I wanted to do something more for him, but all I could do was be there and that’s what I did. I held him until he stopped shaking, until his tears had dried against my chest, and still I held him. Just before my eyes drooped closed again it occurred to me that our heartbeats had synced together. Like somehow they knew that they had found their match. It may have only been a short time, but there was not a doubt in my mind that it was true. Right before I fell asleep I placed a soft kiss on top of Cole’s head and whispered, “I love you.”
