The Rejected Wife by Sweta RP (23)

“Is she all right? What’s her current state?” I questioned the doctor rapidly.

“She’s fine as of now. The stab wounds were surprisingly not that deep. However, she lost a lot of blood. Therefore, we require that she stay here for twenty-four hours to make sure everything is stable. We will transfer her to a room very soon, and then you can see her.” The doctor patted my shoulder and disappeared back into the hectic hallways.

I plopped back into the chair, closing my eyes and releasing breath of relief.

She was okay. Thank God.

“William?” I opened my eyes to see Alex staring at me. He handed me a cup of coffee, and I took it gratefully.

“What did the doctor say?” he asked.

“She’s doing all right.” I gave him a tired smile.

“That’s a relief,” Jackson said, handing me a sandwich he had grabbed from the cafeteria.

We had been in the waiting room for at least two hours, and it was around five in the morning now. After Heather was loaded into the ambulance, we had raced to the hospital and called her family on the way. They arrived at the hospital the same time as us and had reluctantly left an hour ago. Of course, her dad was furious, and I was thankful that I wasn’t his target. Elliot was sure going to be getting hell from him.

Elliot and his gang were arrested and charged with kidnapping and attempted murder. He was going to be in jail for many years, well, at least after he was released from the hospital. Nathan and Jackson ended up beating him up so badly that no one could even recognize his face.

A few minutes later, the doctor returned to tell us that a nurse would take us to Heather’s room shortly. As we waited, I noticed Nathan was staring at Alex, and Alex was avoiding his stare.

That was odd. I raised an eyebrow and looked at Jackson, who smirked.

Looked like I wasn’t the only one who noticed.

Nathan was gay, but the public didn’t really know that, just his family and friends. So it wouldn’t be surprising if he was interested in Alex.

“Hey, William,” Ethan said, clapping my back.

I nodded at him and furrowed my eyebrows. “Chelsea didn’t come with you?

“She’s in the gift shop buying Heather…stuff.” He trailed off as he noticed Nathan and Alex fidgeting awkwardly. He squinted and studied their positions for a moment before sharing a knowing smile with us.

“Mr. Solace?”

I stood up as the nurse approached us.

“Come with me.”

We followed her to a room at the end of the hallway.

“You can either go in one by one or in small groups. But don’t tire her out, she still needs to rest.”

I nodded. I just needed to see her.

“You go in first. We’ll give you guys some privacy,” Alex said.

I rushed inside. Heather was looking out the window, and her head turned to me. She grinned and opened her arms. I ran to her and hugged her tightly.

I could feel tears falling down my cheeks as my arms tightened around her lithe body.

Gosh, I missed her. It was hell trying to find her, and I finally had her back in my arms.

“William, don’t cry.” Heather pulled back and wiped my tears.

I looked down at my hands. “It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have left you alone.”

“No, William, don’t blame yourself. You didn’t know.” Her voice cracked.

I looked up and saw that she was crying too. I kissed her tears away and pressed my lips against hers desperately, putting all of my emotion into the kiss.

I pulled back slowly and leaned my forehead against hers. “You don’t know how much you drive me insane. When I couldn’t find you at home, my heart stopped. It’s something I never ever want to experience again.”

My fingers tangled with hers as I pressed a kiss to her knuckles. “Eísai tóso polýtimi gia ména,” I whispered, remembering what my dad told my mom all the time.

She smiled. “I have no idea what that means, but I’ll pretend it’s a good thing.”

“It is. It means you’re so precious to me.”

We heard a couple of snorts from the doorway and turned to see everyone peeking through the door. Well, so much for privacy.

“Sorry, we’ve been out here for a while,” Chelsea said, walking into the room.

After everyone had given Heather a hug, she turned to me. “So how did you guys find me?”

I paled and looked away nervously. She would kill me if she found out what I did.

“Well, you see,” Nathan began, and I instantly glared at him. “William here had put a tracking device on your phone so he knew where you were at all times.”

“He did what?” she asked, looking slightly shocked.

I raised my hands in defense. “Hey, at least I found you quickly. It would have taken me days otherwise.”

She rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to speak when something caught her eye. I followed her gaze and mentally face-palmed.

“Is something wrong, guys?” she asked Nathan and Alex.

The two of them were glaring at each other as if they knew something none of us did. Their faces turned red and they immediately shook their heads in reply.

“Okay,” Heather said reluctantly.

She turned to me with a questioning look, and I gave her a look that said I would explain later.

“Well, we should get going. Let you rest,” Nathan said, standing up.

“Yeah.” Alex stood up immediately after.

The two of them glanced at each other and raced out the door.

“Should I be worried about those two?” Heather asked.

“Nah,” Ethan, Jackson, and I said at the same time.

She narrowed her eyes, and we pursed our lips to keep from laughing.

“So, Chelsea, when’s your doctor’s appointment?” I asked.

Chelsea raised her eyebrows at my sudden change in subject. “Tomorrow afternoon.”

“I bet you’re excited.” Heather smiled.

“If you think I am, think about Ethan. He’s already looking at houses,” Chelsea said, rolling her eyes, although she had a grin on her face.

“Hey, time flies, before you know it, he’s walking, talking, and then in school. We need to plan ahead,” Ethan defended.

“At least you haven’t started looking at schools. That would be going a bit far.”

Ethan’s cheeks turned slightly red. “Right.”

“You started, haven’t you?” Chelsea accused.

“Maybe,” he mumbled.

Chelsea groaned, and we laughed. “I think we need to have a serious talk when we get home.”

He smirked. “I’m all for being punished.”

She glared at him. “Get your head out of the gutter or you’ll be sleeping on the couch for the rest of my pregnancy.”

His eyes widened and he immediately shut his mouth.

“I think it’s time we leave, honey,” Chelsea said. She took him by the ear and dragged him to the door.

She turned around and smiled. “Call if you need anything, okay? Love you, bye!”

We laughed as we heard Ethan moan in pain all the way down the hall.

I turned to Heather. “Why don’t you go to sleep? I’ll be here when you wake up.”

She yawned and nodded, snuggling into her pillow. I got onto the bed and wrapped my arms around her as she slowly fell asleep.
