It’s been a couple of hours since Kyle drove off without telling us where he was going. Cas’s phone goes straight to voicemail and I brave it and bring up Pope’s number. He’s the last brother I want to tell but he has to get word out that Kyle is missing. He answers on the first ring, like he was waiting on my call.
“You had one job, and you fucked it,” he growls.
“Huh?”
Do they already know?
“Kyle, he’s here. I’m looking at him as I speak. How did he get here without you?”
“He took my keys when I was helping Melissa with something,” I lie.
“Cas ran out of here not looking happy, I suggest you get your ass back here and collect him before he causes trouble for himself…and you.”
He hangs up on me and I realise we have no car here. Melissa drove her car to the club and I drove one of the club’s cars here tonight.
“Call a cab, he’s at the club.”
She actually listens and gets on the phone. Every second we have to wait, she moves faster to get to her brother. Being late, we don’t have to wait long for the cab to show up. Melissa is quiet during the drive and thankfully I don’t have to remind her not to say anything in front of the driver.
She’s fiercely loyal to her brother and I don’t have to wonder how far she would go to protect him. I know she would go to any length to keep him safe. That’s what I was looking for when I joined the Lost Souls, it must be nice to have that from your blood family.
The cab stops up the road from the clubhouse, not wanting to get too close. I pay him, which I had just enough cash for and climb out and follow Melissa.
“Hey,” I call out, when she doesn’t wait.
“What?” she snaps, stopping for me.
“Don’t go in there yelling and screaming. He came here for a reason, and him not being dead, it wasn’t to be the hero and save your brothers.” Not that Cayden is alive anymore, but she doesn’t need to know that.
“Do you know why he came back?”
I have a good idea, but I say, “No.”
“Let’s find out then.”
In her tight leggings and baggy jumper, I haven’t seen her this underdressed before, apart from when she’s been wearing nothing. She looks soft and hot as fuck.
Scotty is on the gate and smirks when I walk through with her beside me, as if he knows more than I do. I ignore it and when we walk into the bar, the place is quiet and if it’s possible, sorrow hangs in the air.
Melissa seeks Kyle out and finds him by the pool table with a beer in his hand. I step up beside Slade at the bar. He’s usually at home by this time.
“Has something happened?” I ask, keeping my voice low.
“Alannah was pregnant, she lost the baby a few hours ago.”
Hence why Pope said Cas ran out not looking happy.
“Cas is with her now, the show isn’t till tomorrow night so I don’t think we’ll see him till then.”
That’s understandable, I wouldn’t want to leave my girl going through a miscarriage and Cas dotes on Alannah like a Queen.
“I’m going home, I’ll see you tomorrow. Oh, and your girl’s brother wants to prospect for us.”
“She’s not my girl,” I grind out.
He raises his eyebrow and the corner of his mouth pulls up into a cock sure grin.
“Time will tell,” he chuckles and leaves.
I push away from the bar and walk over to Kyle and Melissa.
“What do you think you were playing at, leaving and coming back here?” I snap, losing all patience for the kid.
“Leave him alone…” Melissa tries to defend him but I can’t stand it any longer.
“Stop mothering him, he’s a big boy and going after what he thinks he wants,” I tell her and turn to Kyle, “Did you get an answer?”
I’m not sure if he got to talk to Cas or not.
He shakes his head and averts his eyes from his sister.
“He left in a rush.”
“Yeah, well, I wouldn’t go asking again for a while. His old lady lost their baby tonight and he won’t be in the mood for bullshit from you.”
He nods, understanding every word I’m saying and Melissa looks confused.
“Can we go home now, and stay there?” she asks.
I look to Kyle and wait for him to decide.
“Choose your timing wisely and you have more chance of getting what you want,” I tell him, hoping he takes it in and listens.
“What answer? What do you want?” she asks him.
“He’ll tell you after I’ve taken you both home and I want my keys back.”
I lead them both out and back to the car, I wait for Kyle to get in first and then once I’m in I lock the doors.
“That’s a little dramatic,” Melissa mutters.
“Oh, you want him running off again?” I snap and pull out of the club.
She keeps quiet and Kyle wisely says nothing. Kyle disappears into the spare room as soon as we get back and I’m left with Melissa’s sadness and tiredness.
“Go to bed and get some sleep, he’ll still be here in the morning.”
I know this, because I’ll stay awake all night if I have to just to make sure he doesn’t get by me again.
She doesn’t try to argue, or fight me on it, and she doesn’t follow him up the stairs to question him further.
“I’ll get you a spare pillow and cover,” is all she says.
She goes off and comes back within a couple of minutes and leaves me alone and in the darkness. I don’t bother to turn any lights on and undress and settle down on the couch.
She’s lying upstairs on her own, and until I fall asleep, all I can think is I want to be laid next to her.
