Autumn

I was just about to resign myself to going to bed alone, but then I couldn’t even think of sleep with so much on my mind.

I let out a sound of regret and looked away.

“What is it?” he asked.

“I’m going to have to get up and go to my own bed, and I don’t want to.”

“It’s not like I’ll never call you again. You’re living in my house, and I’ll see you every day. Not to mention, you have to start work next Monday, and I’m sure you’ll get your fill of me there.” I gave him a devilish wink, and he grinned as he brushed my hair from my face.

“Does your office have a lot of privacy? Maybe I’ll start this week instead.” He put his arm around me and pulled me closer.

“Enough.” I giggled and then let out a sigh as I brushed my fingers through his hair. “I should go before I change my mind. I have to be a responsible mother first and foremost.”

He let me go and rolled over on his back. “Fine, but I want you to know, I’m not happy about it.” He turned his eyes to me, and the corners of his mouth turned up in a smile.

“Are you going to pout?”

“Maybe.” He folded his arms to play his part.

I leaned over and gave him one more kiss before I got up and put on my clothes. “I’m not sticking around to watch.” It was hard to leave him there, but I knew I better run while I could. “Goodnight, Emmett.”

“Goodnight, Autumn.”

I left the room and then headed outside across the patio and back into the house without making too much noise. Maybe it was the way my feet hadn’t touched the ground because I felt like I was dancing in the clouds.

To think that was what I’d been missing all those years. Just like I had always dreamed, Emmett was amazing at everything he did.
