Chapter Thirty-One
~ Ashton ~
To say that I’d not slept well would be a ridiculous understatement. I hadn’t been able to switch my brain off and stop worrying about Anna all night. My cell phone hadn’t rung though, so either Mike decided not to call me, or she’d had a good night.
Pushing myself out of bed just after seven, I snuck into the shower. My eyes stung with tiredness as I stood under the spray and let the powerful jets loosen my bunched up, tensed muscles.
When I was finished and dressed, I headed back into the room, seeing that Dean was just waking. I forced a smile, hoping I didn’t look as rough as I felt. “Morning, sleep alright?”
He snorted and narrowed his eyes at me. “Not really.”
One of my eyebrows rose in question. “No? How come?”
He sat up, running a hand over his face. “You fucking snore like an elephant with the flu!”
I recoiled, shaking my head and rolling my eyes. “Let me guess, Anna told you to tell me that, right?” She was always trying to make out that I snored; now she obviously had Dean in on it too.
He blinked a couple of times, not answering as he swung his legs out of the bed and trudged into the bathroom, sighing tiredly. My gaze fell on my cell on the side, so I sat on the edge of it, bringing up her number and debating whether I could call her or not. I decided against it, she was probably still sleeping anyway. Our flight wasn’t until twelve, so she could have a longer lie-in. I flopped back onto the bed, playing around with the apps on my phone as I tried not to clock watch. Just as Dean walked out of the bathroom fully dressed, there was a soft knock on the door.
“I’ll get it,” he muttered, already heading over there and pulling the door open. “Oh, good morning, Annabelle.”
My heart leapt in my chest as I shoved myself up quickly and headed over there, practically pushing Dean out of the way as I wrenched the door open further. There she stood. My frayed nerves finally settled as I laid eyes on her beautiful face. Stepping closer to her, I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, pressing my face into her hair and breathing her in. I’d missed her so much that it was actually painful.
She hugged me back immediately. From the corner of my eye, I saw Mike standing in the hall behind her. His posture was awkward as if he was trying not to watch or felt like he was intruding. I forced myself to pull back and smiled down at her. “Hey, how did you sleep? Okay?” I put my hands on either side of her face, and felt my eyebrows knit together. She looked extremely tired. Her eyes were bloodshot, either from lack of sleep or she’d been crying. My jaw tightened as I glared at Mike. We would have words later.
“Fine,” she answered, shrugging as she dropped her gaze to the floor.
I shook my head and sighed as I gave her a little tug into my room and closed the door. I didn’t know why she bothered trying to lie to me, I could always tell. “No you didn’t, Anna.”
She groaned and shook her head. “Whatever, doesn’t matter now,” she replied. “Anyway, I have something that you need to see. Don’t freak out, alright?” she raised her hand, holding out a newspaper to me.
I frowned, confused as I took it from her hands. My mouth popped open when I saw the two photographs that were splashed across the front page. “Fuck me, there’s a picture of us there!”
She sighed and flopped down onto the little sofa in our room. “More than one. There’s a whole two page spread just dedicated to us,” she muttered.
My mouth had gone dry. I couldn’t take my eyes off the photo on the front page. Anna looked just as incredible as I remembered. But then my mind was back on business again. Carter. He could see this and make a move against her in anger. Of course, her father and I had already pre-empted this kind of thing happening, and he’d arranged for a heavy duty block to be put on information going in and out of the prison, limiting the number of magazines and papers going in if she was featured or mentioned at all. Also, all personal letters going into the prison, not just Carter’s, were being screened in a bid to keep this information away from him for as long as possible. It wasn’t an indefinite thing, but hopefully it would hold for a few weeks at least until all the attention around Senator Spencer and his family died down. The trouble was, we had anticipated that Anna would be featured, but not us as a couple. Anna posing with me and claiming me as her boyfriend was sure to anger him.
I didn’t take my eyes from the paper as I sat on the sofa next to her, scanning the words for anything important. It all seemed to be trivial stuff about the party. I bypassed the second and third pages of the article too because they all seemed to be more about fashion successes for the night and who should fire their stylists. I could feel Anna staring at me, clearly waiting for some sort of reaction to all of it.
I forced a smile. “Apparently you should keep your stylist,” I muttered weakly.
She chuckled and nodded. “Keep reading. Did you get to the body language bit yet?”
I shook my head in answer as I turned to the last two pages. My heart stuttered in my chest. Lining a whole two pages were various photographs of me and Anna. The headline insinuated a new hot couple. My eyes flitted over the photos, loving every single one of them. Deciding I should read the article because there was clearly something that Anna didn’t like in here, I folded one leg over the other and set to work.
Apparently they thought that Anna would be the hottest ‘First Daughter’ that there ever had been. I wholeheartedly agreed with that statement. There was a mention of me and my joke about being intimidated to meet her parents. The journalist thought I was adorable.
When I got to the part she was referring to, I felt my back stiffen in shock. The paper had a body language expert analyse some of the photographs that had been taken. His findings were printed next to each one. The first was of future President Spencer shaking my hand. The expert had analysed his smile and the way he was leaning in towards me. He concluded that it meant he liked me and trusted me with his daughter. The caption was that I was ‘already well in with the future in-laws’. Pride swelled in my chest as I read it. If only I could get Anna to actually date me, I’d already be in good standing with the family. The next one they looked at was of me and Anna dancing and laughing. According to the professional, the way that one of her hands was loosely placed in mine and the other tangled into the back of my hair, how close our bodies were, and the ‘small knowing smile’ that lined our lips all meant one thing in his opinion – we were very in love.
Shock resonated through my body, making me jerk in my seat. I couldn’t breathe. They actually thought she was in love with me? I flicked my eyes up to hers, seeing her furiously chewing on her nails. Is she in love with me? I wondered. I would give anything for it to be true. I knew she was starting to get over Jack, and I was certainly in love with her, but according to this expert, she loved me too. Maybe she didn’t even know it herself. That revelation wouldn’t have surprised me in the least; Anna’s brain might be refusing to even contemplate it. If she even was in love with me, then she wouldn’t want to be, I knew that for a fact. Anna didn’t like to feel vulnerable and didn’t want to get hurt again. I knew that she hated the fact that she even cared about me; if she loved me, then it would be a whole new ball game and one that would probably terrify her to the very core.
I knew I couldn’t push it at all because it would probably frighten her and make her retreat back inside herself and shut me out again. I tried desperately not to react as I forced myself to carry on reading the article.
The body language expert wasn’t done with us yet apparently. He analysed another photo and came to the conclusion that I was fiercely protective over her and that she trusted me completely. A small smile crept onto my lips at that last part. Then the part that made an excited shiver tickle down my spine. He stated that ours was a serious long term relationship that would continue to blossom. He predicted wedding bells within the next three years. I gulped and blinked a couple of times. Wedding bells. If I had my way, I would marry her tomorrow if I had the chance.
Apparently, we were the hottest couple that attended the party – outshining even the A list celebs that had attended. The paper had already come up with a trashy couple name too.
I laughed incredulously, shaking my head. I hated couple names. “Annaton? That is lame,” I muttered. Nate was going to ridicule me about this forever; I could already see it happening.
Anna groaned and leant forward putting her head in her hands. “I’m so sorry. I can’t believe they’ve printed all of that. Everything is going to be so much harder for you now.”
I smiled weakly and scooted closer to her, slipping my arm around her shoulder. “Everything will be fine. It’ll settle down in a couple of days. It’s not like they’re going to be following us around college or anything.” At least, I prayed that wouldn’t happen. Clearly I’d already underestimated the reaction to us. I figured it would just be a photo of her with her father, they would name her, and that would be it. I hadn’t expected her to be highlighted this much at all. “Of course, it’ll be a little harder at school now that people know who you are. But it’s not that bad. The boyfriend cover still held so no one will know I’m an agent,” I squeezed her shoulder gently and she looked up at me with apologetic eyes. “Everything is fine. Don’t stress.”
She sighed and nodded, chewing on her bottom lip. “You’re not going to request a reassignment now then?”
I raised one eyebrow. Was there something I was missing? “Why would I?”
She shrugged, still gnawing on her bottom lip.
I sighed and rolled my eyes. “I’m not leaving you. I promised, didn’t I?”
She blew out a big breath and nodded as the corner of her mouth twitched with an unwanted smile. “I know you did. I just wondered if your player instincts were going to make you run away screaming like a little girl now that the papers are insinuating that I’m in love with you.”
I laughed as realisation washed over me. She thought I was a commitment-phobe and would leave because of what they’d printed. She had no idea. “I don’t scream,” I replied, winking at her playfully. “Besides, I kinda like our apartment.”
She chuckled; her eyes sparkled as her tense posture seemed to relax. “Glad to hear it.”
I smiled, knowing I needed to change the subject quickly. There was only so much teasing she could take before she started to freak out or panic and overthink things like she usually did. I didn’t want her getting upset because, in some dark recesses of her mind, she thought that Jack would disapprove of a tabloid rumour.
“Some of these photos are great. We should try to get some of these and put them up in our apartment,” I mused and held the paper out to Dean because he was trying to read it over my shoulder.
Anna nodded. “I love the one on the first page, the one of us on the red carpet.”
“I like the dancing ones too. And the one with your dad in it,” I replied, grinning proudly.
She giggled and slapped my stomach gently with the back of her hand. “Don’t start getting all high and mighty just because the future President likes you.”
I grinned. I couldn’t care less if the President liked me or not, I cared that the father of the love of my life liked me. There was a vast difference in those two things in my eyes. “I’m allowed to brag a little, surely?” I joked.
She laughed and stood, looking down at me. “I’m starving. I’m assuming you haven’t eaten yet?” I shook my head in response, now feeling my stomach grumble because she’d mentioned food. “Breakfast then?”
I stood and nodded eagerly. “Hell yeah. Coming, Dean?” I offered, turning to see him still scanning the paper.
He nodded absentmindedly. “Sure, breakfast with celebrity couple Annaton, every guy’s dream,” he joked, closing the paper and tossing it onto the bed. “Can I get your autograph?” he joked, grinning widely as he walked towards the door and pulled it open.
Anna winced, scrunching up her nose. “Don’t joke about it, I already signed one.”
I looked at her, shocked. “You already signed one? When?”
“When I was in the bar this morning,” she shrugged and turned for the door to follow Dean out of the room.
I grabbed her hand and made her stop as I scowled at her. “When you were in the bar? You went to the bar without guards? Damn it, Anna!” Why did she have no regard for her safety? Did she not know that it would kill me if something happened to her?
She frowned and shook her head. “I took a guard.”
“When were you in the bar?” I asked, frowning and hating the fact that no one had called me.
She shrugged casually. “This morning. I couldn’t sleep, so we went for a tour of the hotel and then had a coffee, or four, in the bar.”
My heart sank. “What time did you get up, Baby Girl?” I asked, pulling her to me. I raked my eyes over her face, noticing again how tired she looked.
“I don’t know. About five? Can we go and eat, please?” she whined, begging me with her eyes to let it go.
I sighed deeply as I traced the shadow that resided under her eye. That shadow broke my heart. “Okay,” I agreed. “Maybe we could get an early night tonight or something? I didn’t sleep too great either.”
She groaned and wrapped her arm around my waist, pressing herself to me. “You weren’t worried about me all night, were you?”
“Nah, bed was lumpy. You really do think too much of yourself,” I joked, turning her towards the door and pushing her out as she burst into a fit of giggles. When we got to the end of the hallway, Dean pressed the button for the elevator, and we all headed in and downstairs to the restaurant for breakfast.
As we stepped into the restaurant and were shown to an empty table, I tried extremely hard not to notice that the tables closest to us had stopped eating and that the middle aged lady had her forkful of eggs halfway to her mouth as she stared at us unashamedly.
Anna squirmed in her chair, so I slid my hand across the table and took hers, squeezing gently. I was graced with a dazzling smile in return. Breakfast was awkward, to say the least. While we were eating, we were approached several times by other guests who were gushing about how excited they were to meet us, and how they had voted for Anna’s father. After posing for a couple of shots on people’s cell phones, I finally decided enough was enough and discreetly nodded to Dean. He then kept everyone else at a respectable distance, but that didn’t stop the whispering, staring, pointing or discreet photos where people were taking selfies with us in the background.
Anna hardly ate anything, just pushed her food around her plate and kept glancing around nervously. When I finally realised that this wasn’t going to get any better, I stood and held my hand down to her. “Let’s go get a coffee in the bar area. Hopefully no one will be in there at this time of day. It’s got to be better than this,” I suggested.
Her hand slid into mine as she smiled gratefully. “Hope so.” She sidled up to me and leant her head on my shoulder as we walked through the lobby, again trying to ignore people that stopped walking just to stare at us. Thankfully, when we got to the bar, it was fairly empty, apart from two or three people that I recognised from the party last night. They didn’t pay a blind bit of notice to us as we slipped in and sat on one of the plush comfortable sofas. Dean and Mike stopped at the door, shoulder to shoulder, clearly blocking the entrance so that we could have some well needed privacy.
After ordering a couple of espressos, I took Anna’s hand again, this time noticing how she winced slightly. I frowned, confused as I pulled her hand up, meaning to look at it. “Your hand okay?” She nodded, tightening her grip on me so that I couldn’t let go. Her eyes told a different story though. I gently pulled my hand out of hers and groaned when I saw four little crescent shaped cuts on the palm of her hand.
She tugged her hand out of my grip and sighed. “It’s fine,” she mumbled.
My heart sank as I looked at her, silently begging her to stop shutting me out and telling me she was fine when, clearly, she wasn’t. “Bad dream?” I inquired, not actually wanting to know the answer but, at the same time, needing to. She nodded, and my stomach clenched with anger. If I ever managed to get within a few feet of Carter Thomas, I would beat him to death without hesitation. I swallowed the raw anger that tasted so acrid in my mouth. “Want to talk about it?”
She closed her eyes and shook her head, picking up her coffee and wrapping her hands around it as she blew the steam from the rim. “No.”
I nodded in acceptance. Silence washed over us for a minute before I decided to change the subject. “So, do you have much to pack?”
She smiled gratefully. “Not really. It’ll only take like ten minutes. I’m keeping those shoes from last night; I think they’ll look super cute with a pair of jeans. What do you think?” she asked excitedly.
I grinned because she could get so excited about a pair of shoes. “Yeah, I guess. I didn’t really see them.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I showed you them.”
I nodded. “Yeah you did, but you also showed me your legs at the same time. My eyes didn’t make it down as far as the feet.”
She giggled and slapped me on the shoulder. “You’re such a pervert!” she scolded, shaking her head, trying to look like she disapproved but failing miserably.
I grinned and nodded. “Only around you, Baby Girl.” She rolled her eyes. She never believed me when I said that, but it was true. Since I’d met her, I hadn’t even looked at another woman, and I just didn’t want to either.
Behind us, Dean walked over, talking into his cell phone. “Yeah, I’ll tell them. Yeah, I’m sure we can get it on, it’s fine. Thanks, Cindy.” He slid his cell phone back into his pocket and winced. “Cindy from the press office just called to let me know that the news channel had a reporter at the party, and they’ll be on in five minutes,” he nodded in the direction of a large flat screen TV that was mounted on the wall. “I’ll go see if we can get that turned on.” He strutted off to the bar, talking to the barman for a minute before the black screen flickered to life and then settled on the news channel.
Anna pulled her knees up to her chest, and we both sat watching it, expecting it to be about the party and her dad’s birthday. On the screen came the host of the show, and seated next to her was one of the reporters that had waited outside on the red carpet, who had inquired about Anna’s dress.
The host smiled warmly, doing her introductions, before turning to the reporter. “So, Judy, you were at the party at The Wiltshire last night. What’s the gossip? The papers are raving about Annabelle Spencer this morning, and I must say, she’s very beautiful,” the host of the show said, smiling broadly. Anna gulped and shifted uncomfortably in her seat. Placing my hand on her knee, I squeezed supportively. They would just talk about her for a minute and then they’d move on.
Judy, the reporter, put her hand over her heart and beamed. “Oh my gosh, she was so beautiful in person, and so sweet. And that boyfriend of hers is incredibly good-looking! I can see why the papers are flagging them as the new celeb couple of the year,” she answered. I couldn’t help but grin. Everyone seemed to think we made a marvellous couple, apart from Anna.
Anna laughed awkwardly, wincing in my direction as if she was now waiting for me to run away screaming again, like she had suggested earlier. “Sorry.”
I rolled my eyes, but didn’t get a chance to answer before they started the excited chatter on the television again. “I know the party was actually to celebrate the birthday of the President-elect, but my goodness, when Annaton stepped out of that limo, all of the attention just shifted to them. It was like some sort of eclipse. And I got the first question!” Judy gushed excitedly.
The pair of them then went on to analyse every detail of Anna’s dress, hair and make-up, before moving on to me. They somehow even knew who made my tuxedo – even I hadn’t known who made my tux. After, they showed a clip of me helping Anna out of the car and us walking up the red carpet. They ooh’d and ahh’d when Anna turned to me and smiled as we were having our photographs taken and when I brushed her hair back. I had to admit, watching it from the outside did make us look like a loved-up couple. The next clip was me joking about meeting the parents; they slowed it down, showing Anna laughing and looking at me with a gorgeous little smile on her face. When it got to my next line about Anna being the best thing that had ever happened to me, they showed that twice, gushing about how sweet I was and how lucky Anna was to have me.
For a further ten minutes, they somehow found more things to talk about before finally changing the subject back to what the show should have been about all along – Anna’s father. When Dean finally turned off the TV, I grimaced over at Anna. She was wincing, hiding behind her knees and just peeking over the top. I laughed before I could stop myself.
She groaned and shook her head. “It’s not funny, Ashton! Did you not just watch the same programme as me?” she whined, pouting at me as if I could somehow make all of this better and make it disappear in a puff of smoke. “And what the hell is Nate going to say? And Rosie, and the rest of the guys at school?”
I smiled weakly and got off of my chair, squatting in front of her and taking her hands in mine. “Anna, calm down. Everything will be fine, and we’ll get through it together. If Rosie and the guys from school want to treat you any different after this, then they’re not worth having in your life and you’ve lost nothing special anyway.” I didn’t mention Nate. I was pretty sure I was in for some mocking about the name, and a decent amount of ridicule for looking like a soppy jerk on TV, but he was my best friend, and there was no doubt in my mind that he wouldn’t treat me or Anna any differently.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes before nodding, seeming to visibly calm herself. “Okay, fine. Let’s just go pack or something. I want to go home. I’m done with all this stuff.”
Leaning forward, I wrapped my arms around her tightly and hugged her, letting her delicious smell waft over me. Her arms wrapped around my neck too, hugging me back. Not ready to let go of her yet, I slid my arms down her back and under her ass as I leant back and pushed myself to my feet, lifting her with me and holding her tightly against me.
She giggled, and her legs automatically wrapped around my waist, clamping herself to me as she buried her face into the side of my neck and finally seemed to relax. A contented sigh left my lips because she was back in my arms again, right where she belonged.
As I carried her through the foyer and headed towards the elevator, someone shouted our names from my left. I turned my head in that direction, seeing a photographer on his knees snapping shot after shot of me carrying her before Dean and Mike both rushed forward and intercepted him, blocking his view.
Anna gasped and I quickly set her down onto her feet, ushering her towards the now open elevator. Not waiting for Dean, I pressed the button for her floor and looked out, seeing them guiding the photographer out of the front door without actually touching him.
“Shit,” I growled under my breath as the doors closed and left us alone. “Sorry. Hopefully they were able to intercept before he got a decent shot?” I offered weakly.
She sighed and nodded, gripping my waist and pulling me towards her as she pressed herself against my chest. As the elevator travelled upwards, I dipped my head and captured her soft lips in a gentle kiss. She seemed to melt against me as her grip tightened on my waist. A small moan escaped her lips as she kissed me back. When the doors to the elevator slid open, I reluctantly pulled my mouth away from hers, smiling when her eyes took a few seconds to open again. When they did open, they latched onto mine and seemed to burn with a passion that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. An agent stuck his head around the door, seeing that it was us before nodding in acknowledgement and going back to his lookout post.
Gripping her hand tightly, I gave her a little tug towards her hotel room door. “Let’s pack your stuff and then you can come to my room while I do mine.”
There wasn’t much to collect really. All of the party clothes had been provided for us, so it was only what we travelled in yesterday and our sleepwear that needed to be packed. She was done within three minutes and then we headed down a floor to pack my belongings.
She lay on my bed while I threw my clothes into a bag. When I was done, the need to hold her was just too great, so I gave in. I crawled up the bed, hovering over her as I smiled down at her underneath me. I didn’t touch her as her gaze came up to meet mine. I searched her eyes, desperately trying to see if what the papers had printed was true. Her full lips curved up into a smile as she reached up and traced the line of my jaw with one delicate finger.
I was almost so lost in the moment that I missed the click of the door as the handle twisted, but thankfully, I still had some degree of control over myself. I rolled off her quickly, tensing, watching the door, but relaxing when I saw Dean saunter in.
By his tight jaw alone, I knew something was wrong. “Car’s here when you’re ready to leave. But, there’s a slight problem.”
I raised one eyebrow in question as I stood. “Problem?”
He nodded, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, there are some reporters out front waiting for you two. Probably a good fifteen or twenty of them all crowded out there. There’s probably about the same amount out the back too. There’s no way to get out of the building without going past them,” he stated.
Anna groaned behind me. I nodded, this was just something we had to deal with, it’d be over soon and then we’d be away from it all. “It’ll be fine.” I put my hand on top of Anna’s head, stroking her hair as I kept my eyes firmly on Dean. “We’ll go out the front, just make sure the car is parked there waiting. Also, ask that Mike guy to follow us to the airport, just in case.”
Dean nodded in acknowledgment before picking up his overnight bag from his bed and sauntering out of the room to get to work. I turned back to Anna. “Once we get back to campus, everything will settle down and they’ll lose interest. It’s only because we’re still in the hotel.” At least, I hope it is! “Come on.” I picked up her bag and mine, and waved for her to follow behind me.
By the time we got down to the lobby and had checked out, passing our luggage to one of the concierges to take to the car, Dean had arranged the cars and had rounded up two extra guards along with Mike. They were all standing by the door waiting for departure.
My hand closed around Anna’s as I pulled her close to my side. “Don’t leave my side. If anyone grabs you or anything, I’ll handle it, or Dean. You just smile and we’ll get to the car.”
She nodded in understanding, chewing on her bottom lip furiously. We walked over to Dean, and I nodded discreetly, watching as they pulled the doors open for us to exit.
As soon as we stepped out, the fifteen or so people started shouting our names and cameras started whirling. Dean and Mike stepped to our sides, arms outstretched, keeping the crowd back as they surged forwards, trying to get the best pictures. My eyes scanned the crowd, looking for anything untoward or suspicious, but they were all just reporters after a scoop.
One of the reporters quickly shoved a Dictaphone towards us, leaning in as close as she could even though Dean was holding her back. “Annabelle, Ashton, what do you think about what the papers are saying about you two this morning?”
Anna looked up at me quickly as if she wasn’t sure she should answer. I shrugged. I had no idea what the protocol was for it, she should probably have had a press agent here with her or support, but that was too late now. No one predicted anything like this would happen.
She cleared her throat and smiled. “It’s crazy, this is all just crazy,” she answered, waving her hand around at all the people as her hand tightened on mine.
Another reporter tried to bustle forward. “Ashton, what do you think of the body language expert saying that the President-elect liked you and trusted you with his daughter?” he shouted.
I shrugged awkwardly. I didn’t want to answer any questions; all I wanted was her safely away from this crowd. “I’m glad, of course. What boyfriend wouldn’t like to hear that his girlfriend’s dad likes him?”
Anna laughed at my answer, and we carried on walking, but it was a slow feat because they were all crowded around the path to the car. We were about half way to the car now.
“Annabelle, now your father has been elected, do you think your relationship with Ashton will change?” another asked.
Anna smiled. “I hope not, I don’t want it too. Hopefully he won’t see me as a different person now. What do you think, Pretty Boy, you gonna see me any different?” she asked, turning to look at me, smiling affectionately.
I grinned and pulled her closer to me. “I won’t see you any different, Baby Girl,” I promised.
“Can you two kiss so we can get a photo?” one of the reporters pleaded.
I groaned inwardly. She wouldn’t want to do that. If we were to kiss, then her parents would find out and she would hate that. I looked down at her and was just about to tell the reporters that that kind of thing was private, when Anna gripped the front of my T-shirt and pulled my mouth down to hers.
My whole body stiffened from shock, but I kissed her back immediately, very aware that the cameras were clicking like crazy around us as they took their shots. As she tried to deepen the kiss, I pulled back and shook my head discreetly. Clearly, she had forgotten where we were and that everyone was watching. She whimpered as I pulled away, but then blushed as she seemed to come back to reality. I smiled and brushed my finger across her pink cheek as I nodded my head in the direction of the car, signalling for her to start walking again.
“Do you think you two will get married?” someone questioned.
I grinned sheepishly. I would marry her right now if I could! I squeezed her waist, she probably knew what my answer would be to that because I’d made a couple of little marriage jokes to her already. Anna winced, recoiling slightly at the question. “We’re pretty young to be thinking about marriage,” she answered weakly, shaking her head in rejection.
“Ashton, what do you think?” the same guy probed.
I laughed and shrugged, deciding to answer honestly. “Well, I don’t think we’re too young, let’s leave it at that.”
Anna gasped, slapping me on the shoulder playfully before pushing me towards the car. “What the? Seriously, Ashton, you should get in the car before you drop us in anything!” she scolded nervously, blushing profusely. The reporters around us laughed too at her embarrassed outburst.
I grinned and grabbed her hand, pulling her forwards the last couple of steps as the cameras started up again. Dean opened the back door of the car, so I manoeuvred behind Anna so that she had to get in first, discreetly positioning my body so that I was between her and the reporters. Once she was safely in, I slipped in behind her and Dean slammed the door before climbing in the driver’s seat. Twisting to look out of the back window, I saw Mike and the other guard climb into the car behind us and follow as Dean pulled out and sped off down the road.
Anna slapped me on the shoulder again. The blush was still prominent on her cheeks. “What the hell was that?” she asked, shaking her head in disbelief. A small smile twitched at the corners of her mouth though, so I knew I wasn’t in too much trouble.
I smirked at her. “Oh come on, if I asked you flat out, you’d say no. Maybe I need to trap you into it,” I joked, winking at her.
The smile faded from her face instantly. “Don’t ever trap me into anything, Ashton. I don’t like being forced into things,” she mumbled. Her chin trembled as she spoke and I suddenly realised this wasn’t just about me making a joke, this was something deep-rooted to do with Carter and her not having control of her life.
I cupped my hands around her face, making her look at me as I smiled apologetically. “I was playing around. I would never do that to you,” I promised.
“Good,” she sighed and nodded. Her heavily lidded eyes met mine and she scooted closer to my side, setting her head on my shoulder. “Let’s go home,” she whispered.
