Sierra
Delia’s surgery went well, and we were all there supporting her. Clive wanted to come, but Delia wouldn’t allow it. She was really socking it to him both in personal matters and financial. I invited her to stay with me and Cameron while she recovered, but she insisted she’d be more comfortable in her own house, plus Ava would be there and the nurse she hired.
Cameron and I walked hand in hand into my doctor’s office. Once my name was called, the nurse took us back to a room and told us the doctor would be in shortly.
“Hello, Sierra.” Dr. Hollis smiled as he walked through the door.
“Hi, Dr. Hollis.”
“Who’s this?” he asked as he pointed to Cameron.
“This is my boyfriend Cameron, AKA baby daddy.”
“Ah. Good. It’s nice you’re both here so you can hear your baby’s heartbeat for the first time. Now lie down and pull up your shirt a bit.”
He turned on the screen, squeezed some warm jelly over my belly, and then pressed down with a wand. Cameron was by my side holding my hand and staring at the screen in amazement.
“Here’s your baby,” Dr. Hollis spoke. “And here is the heartbeat. Nice and strong.”
I looked over at Cameron, who had tears in his eyes just like I did. He gave my hand a squeeze and kissed my forehead.
“That is amazing,” he spoke.
“Everything looks good. I want to see you back here next month for an ultrasound. At that time, we’ll be able to know the sex of the baby if you’re interested in knowing.”
“Yes,” I spoke.
“No,” Cameron said.
“Why not?” I asked him.
“I think something like this should be a surprise.”
I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to argue. But the reality was, we were both going to find out.

Hearing and seeing our baby’s heartbeat was so surreal. The thought of becoming a father excited me and I was already counting down the months until he or she was born. Sierra was already starting to show and her clothes were no longer fitting. So what did she do? Dragged me along to shop for maternity clothes with her.
“I’m sure Kirsty was upset you didn’t ask her.”
“She’s not upset; she’s meeting us at the mall.” She grinned. “James too. In fact, they’re swinging by and picking up Rosa.”
“Then why did I have to come?”
She cocked her head and narrowed her eye at me.
“You don’t want to help me pick out clothes to wear since I can’t fit into anything because your baby is expanding my belly?”
Well, when she put it like that, who was I to deny her?
“Right. You have a point.”
The gang met us there and I thanked God for James. After a couple of stores, we decided to go sit down and have a drink while the women shopped.
“I was wondering if you would be my best man?” James asked.
“Really? I’d love to, man. Aren’t you and Kirsty a little worried about Sierra? Your wedding is really close to the baby’s due date.”
“Nah, we talked to Sierra about it and she’ll still have another two weeks. First babies are always late.”
As soon as we were done with our beer, I looked over and saw the women walking towards us carrying an obscene number of bags.
“Did you buy out the whole mall?” I asked.
“Very funny.” Sierra crinkled her nose at me.
“I suppose you had to buy shoes to go with each outfit,” James spoke.
“Only five pairs,” Sierra replied.
“And where are those extra five pairs going?”
“You’ll have to move some of your stuff out.” She smirked.
“I have an idea,” I spoke. “How about you move the shoes you hardly ever wear into the closet in the guest house?”
All three women looked at me like they couldn’t believe I had just said that.
“What?” I held out my arms.
“I’d be quiet if I were you,” James leaned over and whispered to me.
“Are you ready to go home, babe? You look tired.”
“I am ready. My feet hurt, so you’re going to have to massage them.”
“Don’t worry. Your feet won’t be the only thing I’ll massage.” I winked.
