Leave Me (No Matter What Book 2) by B.L. Mooney (21)

Chapter Twenty-One

April

It took longer than I wanted it to take, but it was worth it. I had to make sure the changes were complete before I brought on more help and I had to sneak around to make the changes. If Tim caught wind of it before I was finished, I wasn’t sure what he’d do.

There was no reason for Tim’s old office to sit empty. He moved to Brody’s office when Brody left, but I should’ve moved into the other office when I bought Brody’s share. I didn’t care that Tim got the bigger office.

The bell from the front broke me out of my thoughts. I smiled and went to greet my replacement. My smile faltered when I saw the leggy brunette in the lobby. I should’ve asked for a male from the temp service.

“Good morning.” I held my hand out.

“Good morning.” She shook it and looked behind me, trying to get a peek behind the door before it closed. Maybe she was eager to start.

“My name is April D’Angelo and it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“I wasn’t aware you knew I was coming.”

“Yes, I was told you’d be here, but I have to say you’re early.”

“Well, I wanted to get a start on things before he got too busy.”

I shook my head. “I’m sorry, he?”

“Yes, Timmy Michaels.”

“You’re here to see Tim?” I narrowed my eyes. “I’m the one who called for the temp. I know we haven’t been allowed to use your service for quite some time, but I’m the one in charge of hiring.”

“Hiring? No, I’m not here for a job. I’m here to see Timmy.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Yes, you’ve called him that. I mean, you’ve said you were going to meet with him.” I looked at her again. “Just what kind of business do you have with Timmy?” I shouldn’t have sounded so jealous, but I was. I couldn’t help it.

She smiled before the door opened and in walked a young blonde woman who looked as if she was still dressing herself. She pulled the skirt down in the back and yanked it up in the front before the door closed behind her. She pushed her glasses up and put her hair behind her ear. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.” She walked up to the counter.

I turned my attention back to the brunette with the long legs. “Is Tim expecting you? I wasn’t made aware of any appointments.”

“No, he isn’t. I’m kind of a surprise.” She smiled and held her hands out.

“I’ll say.” I turned to the woman who was tapping on the counter. “Are you here from the temp service?” It took me tapping on her shoulder to get her to turn around. “Dallas Cline?”

“Yes, that’s me. Are you Ms. D’Angelo?”

“Yes, I am.” I turned to the other woman who I hadn’t yet learned the name of. “What exactly is your name?”

“Ms. Montgomery. If I could just take a moment of his time.”

“I’ll let him know you’re here.” I started to turn Dallas toward the door, but the leggy brunette stopped me.

“I’m not sure he’ll know me by that name. Just tell him someone is asking for Timmy.”

He didn’t know her last name? It seemed as though he had a one-night stand. I smiled. Let him have a regretful morning. “I’ll just take you back there with us.”

I walked both women back to the office. I pointed to my office and asked Dallas to take seat in there. I directed Ms. Montgomery the extra few feet to Tim’s office. “I’m just going to make sure it isn’t interrupting anything.” I pointed to my old desk. “Please, have a seat and I’ll be right out to get you.”

I didn’t knock and walked into his office. I was done waiting. He obviously wasn’t anymore. He was at his computer typing away.

“Oh, Timmy.” I drew out his name like the slut in the office probably had to get him to take her home.

He glanced at me and narrowed his eyes. “What are you doing?”

“Did someone have a good night last night?”

“I’m not playing this game. If you’ve got something on your mind, then spit it out. Otherwise, I’ve got work to do.”

“Did she spit it out, or does she swallow?”

He turned from the computer and looked at me. “Have you been drinking?”

“No, but I hope you were when you picked up that tramp. You can be sweet when you’re drunk, but the sober you is an asshole.”

He caught up to me before I made it to the door. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Your one-night stand is out there, Timmy.”

His lip twitched. “Are you jealous?”

“Of that hussy?” I scoffed and crossed my arms. “Hardly.”

He walked close to me as he headed out the door and stopped long enough to whisper into my ear, “Only my sister calls me that, but I like that you’re jealous.” He was out the door before I could process what he said.

“Wait, your sister?” I walked faster to catch up. I needed to see that exchange.

“Lila, what are you doing here?” He crossed his arms as soon as he stepped out from his office.

I placed my hand on his side and pushed him out of the doorway so I could get out. Lila stood and walked over to Tim. I took the seat at my desk to watch it all unfold. She hugged him, but aside from moving his arms so her chest wasn’t impaled by his elbows, he didn’t make a move to hug her.

She cleared her throat and stepped back. “I wanted to see you. I want to talk to you.”

Tim blew out a breath and glanced at me before turning around and going back to his office. He held the door open until she walked through it. I expected him to shut it, but I didn’t expect to hear the lock click.

I turned back to my desk. I had to get ahold of myself if I wanted to get over him. I shouldn’t care that he had a one-night stand. I shouldn’t care if he gets another serious girlfriend. What I do care about is his happiness. If I couldn’t make him happy, I could only hope someone else would.

I was relieved that was his sister, but he didn’t look happy she showed up. He never did tell me what happened at his dad’s. He didn’t confide in me anymore. I got some information from Maggie. It sounded as if the trip went as he expected it. I looked back to his door. Although, I didn’t think he expected her to follow him home. I smiled. Maybe she could help talk some sense into him.

“Excuse me, Ms. D’Angelo?”

I looked at the doorway to my new office and remembered I was in the middle of training my first staff member. She was temporary, but she was still mine.

I closed my eyes and placed my fingers to my forehead. “I’m so sorry.” I stood and walked her back into my office. “I got a little sidetracked, but I’m here now.”

That’s okay.”

“So, did the agency give you any information about the job?”

“Yes, they told me I would be handling the lobby, scheduling appointments, some office work, and ordering supplies.”

“That’s mostly correct. I will have the final order say, but I do want you to search for good deals and check prices on a few of the bigger purchases. If we want to keep costs low, we need to make sure all of our supplies are properly researched.”

“Oh, I can shop like nobody’s business. I’ll get good deals for you.”

I smiled at her enthusiasm and youth. It would be nice to have both around the office instead of the brooding asshole in the office next to me.

“I feel as though I need to warn you about my partner here.”

“The guy in the next office? I was already warned to stay away. If I don’t feel safe, I’m to leave and call the office.”

“Oh, it’s nothing like that. His brother was the one who didn’t have people skills.” I tilted my head. “Well, Tim doesn’t really have great people skills, either, but you’ll primarily be working with me only. If he does or says anything that makes you nervous, please let me know.”
