Billionaire Desire: A Billionaire Romance by Lauren Wood (13)

Hail

I stood at the door for a while, trying to figure out what the hell just happened. The door was shut now, and I had an urge to knock on it again. Maybe this time I would get more than just a kiss.

After time, I realized that I had to go. I couldn't stand in front of her door any longer. But I really didn't want to. I wanted to stay there and convince her to give me more. It was all I was ever going to want from Evony. More.

I walked back to the car and ignored the driver’s look in the rearview mirror. He had seen a lot of women come and go, but I don't think he’d seen me walk away without finishing what I started. Everything about Evony was different and most of the time it was a good thing. In this situation though, I wished she was like all the other girls. It would be a lot easier.

A part of me wants to call whatever I can, to get her off my mind. It wouldn't take much, but I learned in the last little while, that just because I could have almost anyone else that I wanted, it never was enough. I had a certain taste at the moment and Evony was the only thing that was going to make it right.

Whenever I came into work the next day, she could barely look at me. I of course couldn’t keep my eyes off of her and a lot of it had to do with what she was wearing and how she looked. Most days, her bun was tight, and her skirt was long, but today was different. Today her hair was down again like it was last night, and she was actually wearing a dress instead of a skirt that was a business suit.

“Good morning Evony.”

“Good morning Haylee. Did you have a good night?”

I told her that I did and waited for her to say something more. It became clear that she wanted pretend like none of this ever happened. That we ‘t kissed and I hadn't felt her body against mine. I don't know how I was supposed to forget all of this, but Evony wanted to pretend like it never happened.

“It was alright. I didn't sleep very well though. Had a lot of my mind.”

While I am not stupid enough to ask you what it is that you have on your mind Hail. Considering that it's you, there is no telling.”

She said it as a joke, but I felt like she knew exactly what I was talking about. She knew that I was going to say something in reference to last night and what happened in front of her place. And what happened then, was enough to awaken my body. I knew better than to bring it up, because all she was going to do, was clean it up like she did before.

“You look different today.”

“Yeah, we have that meeting after lunch remember? I figure that I might as well look the part. I have been wanting to try something different for a while. Do you like it?”

Again, it sounds like a fishing question but I knew better. I knew that she was unsure of herself, even though she had no reason to be. She was a remarkable woman.

“You look great Evony. You always do, no matter what you wear. We will seal the deal today, even if you were still wearing your schoolmarm uniform. For some people, it actually does something for them.”

“Some people?”

I smiled and I liked that she knew where I was going to go with that. That was a step up.

“Do I even have to ask?”

I should go ahead and tell her that she didn't have to. From the look in her eyes, I could tell that she already did.

“So, do you want me to change back?”

I shook my head and told her that I was just joking with her. “You look great in whatever you wear Evony. I truly mean that.”

That got the smile that I was looking for and I started to relax a little bit. I had built up the kiss so far in my head, that now it seemed kind of silly. It was just a kiss after all. I didn't have to look at it like it was more than that. It was just a kiss. Nothing more.

Evony said she had things to do before the meeting and I tried to pretend like I was busy too. I didn't like how it seemed like I was thinking about her non-stop, and she didn't seem too worry about me. That was really going to drive me crazy. Why was she so different, than everybody else I wanted?

We agreed to meet up for lunch to discuss the meeting that we had later in the day. It was going to be a huge sale, if we could sell it. I had not just been blowing smoke up her skirt when I said that I knew we would get it. Evony was very good at her job and today she was beautiful on top of that. There was no man in the world that would be able to tell her no. I certainly wasn't able to.

“Are you even listening to me Hail?”

“It is very hard to sometimes Evony. I promise you that I do try.”

“Is it my voice? Do I just have the sort of voice that is easy to tune out?”

I just shook my head in amazement, because once again she was thinking that I was being serious and wanted to change how she was, just to make me happy. I had never met someone that was so selfless before. It was one of the main reasons that I knew that getting her promoted would only benefit everyone. Even though she was my competition, it was hard to feel that way with someone like her.

“No, your voice is perfect Evony. Pretty much everything about you is perfect.”

“What are you buttering me up for? I feel like a biscuit right now.”

She added a southern twang into her voice and it made me chuckle. When I first met her, she was so prudish and rigid, but now she joked around and she was actually pretty good at impromptu voices as well. She had an accent for every mood.

“I would love to be in your head for just one day.”

“It would probably scare you Hail. So why am I so perfect today? I feel like you're about to tell me some really bad news or something.”

“I think you're perfect every day, I just don't say it out loud. Don't want to get your head even bigger than it already is.”

“My head is already big enough Hail. Are you worried about the meeting?”

I was worried about the fact that I didn't give a shit about the meeting. I didn't even really give a crap about my sales anymore, which used to be something that I had to check out many little times a day, because that was what mattered to me. Now, all I could think about, was a piece of forbidden fruit that I wanted to get a taste of so bad. And I couldn't have it and it was killing me.

“No, I'm not worried about the meeting. You're going to do great Evony. I wish I had the focus that you do.”

“I wouldn't really say that I have much in the way of focus at the moment.”

“No?”

I got hopeful for a little bit. I don't know why I liked the sound of it so much. The idea of her being lost in her own thoughts, gave me hope that hers were somehow similar to mine.

“It is hard to focus too much when you keep looking at me like I’m a snack, Hail. It’s hard to think at all, when you’re looking at me like that.”

“You’re definitely not a snack, full meal, easy.”

She rolled her eyes at me, like she’d heard it all before. My lines never fell so flat before. Why was it the woman I wanted, was the only one that seemed immune to my charm?

“Well, snack or meal, I’m not food.”

“But you’re certainly edible.”

Evony had this confused look for a moment and I knew that it wasn’t going to do me any good.

“Edible?”

I leaned in.

“Yes, I could spend hours down there, getting a taste of you.”

I pulled back and smiled at her. She was still confused and then it was me who realized something. How could I get her in bed with dirty suggestions, when she didn’t even know what the hell I was talking about? This really was a mess that she had me in.

“What?”

Growling in response, I took a drink and sighed. She was never going to get it, unless she gave me a chance to show her. I just realized that everything I used before to get a woman, used the premise that she knew what I was offering. Evony didn’t have a clue.

How could I be so stupid?
