Then We Happened (Happened Series Book 2) by Sandi Lynn (26)

Sierra

One Week Later

I hadn’t heard from Cameron all week. Was this real? Was it really the end? How could he just up and walk away like he did? I spent the first three days in bed, refusing to get up. Plus, I was still vomiting. This mess I created physically made me sick. Rosa took care of me and Kirsty held down the fort at the office. I had her cancel all my meetings until I felt well enough to return. Would I ever feel well enough again? With Cameron out of my life, it didn’t look promising. I loved him so much. He was my world and I needed him.

I finally decided to pick myself up, drag my sorry ass out of bed, and go to work. Sasha was a godsend and took care of all the things I should have done for the engagement party.

As I sat behind my desk, a nauseous feeling swept over me once again and I ran to the bathroom.

“Sierra, this can’t go on,” Kirsty spoke as she walked into the bathroom. “Maybe you should go see your doctor and get something to calm you down.”

“Maybe I should. I can’t stand this anymore. My nerves are shot.” Tears started to fill my eyes. “I miss him so much, Kirsty.”

“I know you do. We all do.” She took hold of my arm and helped me up from the floor.

“I only did what I did because I love him, and I wanted him to be happy.”

“Your intentions were good, but secrets aren’t, sweetie.”

“I honestly didn’t think he’d dump me over it. Maybe that’s a sign that he never really loved me in the first place.”

“Stop it, Sierra. Cameron did and still does love you. Now call the doctor, get on some meds, and start to feel better. You have to get out of this funk. You have a business to run!”

“How can I run a business when my personal life is such a clusterfuck?”

“The same way you carried on after Ryan. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” she spoke.

I looked at her with tears in my eyes. “This did kill me,” I whispered.

“No it didn’t. Nothing can keep Sierra Adams down for too long. He’ll eventually come around.”

“You think? He hasn’t even bothered to contact me in over a week.”

“He’s a guy. He needs his space. Guys aren’t like girls. They don’t hold grudges for too long.” She smiled.

I pushed the button on the intercom and asked Sasha to call my doctor, tell them it was an emergency, and to get me an appointment today. Within a few minutes, she alerted me that I had an appointment in an hour.

I picked up my phone and took in a deep breath as I sent a text message to Cameron about the engagement party. Regardless of what happened, Kirsty and James were his friends too.

“I know I’m the last person you want to hear from, but the party is Saturday night. Don’t punish Kirsty and James because of what I did. And you don’t have to worry, I promise to stay clear of you. You won’t even know I’m there.”

I waited patiently for a response, but one never came. I grabbed my purse and climbed into the car.

“I’m glad you’re finally going to see a doctor,” James spoke. “I hate seeing you like this.”

“The only cure is for Cameron to come back.”

I stepped inside the large medical building and took the elevator up to my doctor’s office. After signing in, I waited for approximately ten minutes before they called me back.

“Hello, Sierra. How are you today?” Doctor Hollis asked.

“Not good or else I wouldn’t be here, would I?”

He gave me a smirk as he took a seat on the stool.

“What’s going on with you?”

I explained everything to him about what happened with Cameron and that I needed something to calm my nerves.

“Okay. But first I need a urine sample and we’ll draw some blood.”

“Why?” I asked in confusion.

“Urine test is standard and I just want to make sure nothing else is going on.”

“I’m not sick, Dr. Hollis. I mean, I’m heartsick, but that’s all.”

“I understand that, Sierra, but it’s always best just to check anyway. Plus, if I put you on some medication, I want to be sure there aren’t any problems with your liver.”

I peed in a cup and handed it to the nurse after she drew my blood.

“We’re going to send this down to the lab now and should get the results back in about twenty minutes. Dr. Hollis put a rush on it.”

“Thank you.”

As I waited, I pulled out my phone to see if Cameron texted me back. Nothing. I just wanted to go home and climb into bed and go to sleep. I didn’t want to deal with this reality anymore.

“Well, Sierra,” Dr. Hollis spoke as he walked into the room. “You’re right. You’re not sick. You’re pregnant.”

An uncontrollable laughter escaped me.

“That’s a good one, Dr. Hollis. Thanks for making me laugh.”

“I’m serious, Sierra. You are pregnant and what you’re experiencing is morning sickness.”

The laughter stopped and I swallowed hard as I stared at him.

“I can’t be pregnant. Do the test again,” I demanded.

“Both the urine and blood test show that you are indeed pregnant. You’re about six weeks.”

“That’s impossible. I had my period last month.”

“Was it normal?”

I needed to think back and it had dawned on me that it only lasted one day and it was merely spotting.

“Umm. No, I guess not.”

“You have options if you need them. I’m giving you prenatal vitamins and you are to take them every day. Stay off the stress, Sierra. I mean it. It’s not good for you or the baby.”

I walked out of his office, dazed, confused, and in shock. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. As I stepped out of the elevator on the first floor, I saw Delia walk in. What was she doing here? I followed her and stayed at a distance so she wouldn’t see me. I followed her down a long hallway that housed many different doctors’ offices. She opened a door on the left and stepped inside. When the door shut, I walked up to it and read the name on the wall: Dr. Hannah Bishop, Oncologist. What the hell? I thought to myself. Why would Delia be seeing an oncologist?

I took in a deep breath and headed out the doors of the building and climbed into the back of the car.

“How did everything go?” James asked.

“Fine.”

“Sierra, are you all right?”

“Yeah. Just take me home. I need to lie down.”

“Okay. Did the doctor prescribe you some medication?”

“He did. I’ll get it later.”

I pulled out my phone and sent Kirsty and Sasha a text message.

“I’m going home for the day. Reschedule my meetings.”

A second after I sent it, my phone rang and it was Kirsty.

“Hello.”

“What did the doctor say?”

I couldn’t tell her. Not yet. I still hadn’t fully accepted it and I was scared.

“He gave me something. I just need to go to sleep.”

“Okay. Get some rest and I’ll handle things here. I’ll drop by later to check on you.”

“Thanks, Kirsty.”

“Sierra?” James called to me.

I looked up and saw him looking through the rearview mirror.

“You’re pregnant. Aren’t you?” he softly asked.

The words wouldn’t come out of my mouth, so I just sat there and slowly nodded my head as tears began to fall down my face. The moment we arrived home, James helped me out of the car.

“What am I going to do?” I cried.

He wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.

“Everything will be okay. You’re Sierra Adams and you can handle anything.”

“Yeah. Sure I can. Look at how I am right now? Do I look okay?”

“You’re in shock. Let’s go inside.”

As soon as we walked through the front door, I wiped my eyes so Rosa didn’t suspect something.

“Rosa?” I called.

There was no answer. She must have gone to the grocery store. I headed over to the bar and grabbed the bottle of tequila.

“Uh. No.” James quickly took it from me. “What’s wrong with you? You can’t drink.”

“Shit. I forgot.” I rubbed my forehead.

“Go upstairs and climb into bed. I’ll make you some chamomile tea.”

Before James made it upstairs with my tea, I was out; sound asleep, trying to forget about life. When I awoke and looked at the clock, I realized I had been asleep for over four hours. I felt the sickness rise inside me, so I stumbled out of bed and ran to the bathroom. Why the hell do they call it morning sickness when it lasts all day? I still couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that I was pregnant, not to mention seeing Delia walk into that oncology office. After I finished vomiting, I leaned against the tub, brought my knees up, and laid my head down. What was I going to do? How was I going to tell Cameron? When was I going to tell Cameron? He wouldn’t speak to me as it was, and now he was going to be a father and tied to me for the rest of his life. Shit.

I picked myself up and went down to the kitchen, where I found Rosa, James, and Kirsty.

“Hey, sweetie. How are you?” Kirsty pouted.

“Are you hungry, Senorita?” Rosa asked.

“No. I’m just tired,” I replied. “Kirsty, can you and James do me a favor and go get my prescription filled?”

“Of course. Where is it?”

“In my purse.”

She walked over, pulled the white slip out, and looked at it.

“That’s weird. Why would your doctor give you a script for prenatal vitamins to calm your nerves?”

I swallowed hard as I looked at her.

“Holy fucking hell, you’re pregnant?” she screamed.

“What?!” Rosa exclaimed.

“Yep. That’s what the doctor said.”

“Oh my God!” Kirsty began jumping up and down. “We’re having a baby!” She ran over to me and hugged me tight.

I looked over at Rosa, who made the sign of the cross and then prayed. I knew exactly what she was thinking. The same thing I thought. Poor kid.

“I don’t know how I feel about it,” I spoke. “The doctor said I have options.”

Kirsty broke our embrace and stared at me with a blank look.

“What do you mean you have options? You’re not thinking about an abortion, are you?” she asked with seriousness.

I didn’t respond with either a yes or a no.

“Sierra, you have to tell Cameron,” Kirsty spoke. “And you’re not having an abortion. I know exactly what you’re thinking and you’re wrong. Dead wrong!”

“Rosa, can you make me some tea and bring it upstairs?”

“Of course.” She softly smiled.
