Love At All Costs (Stetson Series Book 3) by Xyla Turner (4)

Chapter 4

Mills

The day could not start fast enough, and I wasn’t sure what I was happier about. Whether it was my first day of freedom or that I would be able to see Nadine again. It was still week one of the three-week plans and it had been absolute torture having her in class and not being able to engage.

That kiss, her lips, the feel of her hands as they wrapped around my neck.

Gotdammit.

That one single moment haunted my dreams. With my eyes wide open and in my sleep. She wanted me, just as much as I wanted her. However, I shouldn’t have kissed her. I shouldn’t have engaged. I was not planning to do anything until I was officially free. I swear Rebecca knew what was coming.

The woman would not meet up with me for anything. She was suddenly busy, all the time, which was basically avoiding me for a week. Finally, I just went over to her parents’ house after class yesterday and told her we needed to talk.

“I don’t want to talk,” Rebecca said with red eyes brimming with unshed tears.

“Becca, don’t do this.” I told her. “You already know this isn’t working. Why are you trying to hold on? This has been happening for a while.”

“What do you mean? We can make it work. We’ll go to counseling or, uh, we can talk to the minister,” she urged. “Something.”

“Why?” I asked.

“B-because, we’ve told everyone that we’d get married, have kids, and get that house over there on Brisbane Street.” The tears were threatening to drop. “Everybody is expecting us to do this.”

“See,” I raised my hand in her direction. “Not once have you said you loved me. You want this to work because we’re in love. We’re not, Becca. We haven’t been for a while and you know what I’m saying is true. I’m not just making up shit.”

Her eyes looked downward and the tears finally began to fall.

“We can’t do this,” I continued. “I don’t want you to be unhappy. I want for us to be happy and the best way for that to happen is not together like this. You’ve always been a friend to me. Always. The closest friend that I’ve had besides my brothers and I’d rather not lose that.”

Her head nodded and then she sighed, “What will I do?”

Rebecca wasn’t really asking me more than she was asking herself. Why she wanted to create this picture-perfect life on stony ground, I wasn’t sure. I just knew it was not something I planned to sign up for during my lifetime. I wanted a partner, a friend and a lover. Not just someone for the sake of having someone. I often got the feeling that Becca just wanted to live out her small-town fantasy. Any man could have fit the bill, but I just happened to present and interested at the time.

“I don’t know, Becca,” I replied.

Leaning in, I kissed her on the head and bid her farewell.

That was last night and now I was in class waiting for Nadine to come through the doors.

Well, I thought I was, until she came in on the arm of one snotty-nosed boy who wore checkered sweaters in Libby, Iowa. They literally walked through the doors giggling and shit and I damn near jumped out of my seat to pull her away.

Fuck.

She didn’t look in my direction or even acknowledge my presence like she had all last week. This was not good and I was not feeling up to being tolerant. Therefore, unfortunately, I conducted a pop quiz on the previous week’s materials and had the boy come up to lead the class with his answers because as I suspected, they were all wrong. He was fifty shades of purple with embarrassment and she merely glared at me. The woman even tried to come to his rescue a few times but I wouldn’t allow it.

It was wrong. I know but I didn’t have a fuck to give.

After class, the boy bolted out of there and so did everyone else. I’m sure they knew I was on a tearing-down storm.

By the time I got to Pops’ for dinner, I was exhausted. A nap would have been in order but the smell of whatever was cooking, met me at the door.

“Pops, what are you making?” I asked. “Smells good.”

No answer.

I walked into the kitchen to hear, “Darlin, you can’t put ketchup in meatloaf. Who does that?” This was Pops sitting on the stool watching as Nadine moved around the kitchen like she owned it.

The woman smiled brightly, which stirred up other things and replied, “Watch me.”

Then she squirted lots of ketchup on the mound of raw meat in front of her.

“Oh, hell,” Pops groaned.

What the hell?

“Pops, what’s going on?” I asked with my eyes on Nadine’s.

“Ya girl over here is messing up my dinner again?” Pops responded in a bored tone.

She briefly looked at me, then addressed Pops. “I guarantee you’ll like it.”

He was shaking his head as if he didn’t believe it one bit. That made two of us but I couldn’t believe she was here.

“Nadine, what are you doing here?” I asked.

“She’s cooking me dinner, that’s what.” Pops turned towards me and pinned me with a look. “An old man needed some dinner.”

“Pop, can I have a moment with Nadine?”

“No,” she answered. “We’ve nothing to discuss.”

“Son, she’s my guest. Run her out of here if you want. You’ll see me about it.” Pops gave me a nod that meant he was not playing. I acknowledged his words and he left.

“Nadine,” I started but she kept her back turned to me.

“We have nothing to discuss.” She repeated as I moved in closer.

“I shouldn’t have kissed you,” I said quickly.

Nadine whipped around with an angry glare and said, “No, you shouldn’t have. Men with girlfriends shouldn’t put their lips on other women.”

Goddammit.

Pops.

“You’re right,” I admitted as I closed the distance between us. “I don’t have a girlfriend now.”

Nadine blinked before she stuttered, “What?”

“You heard me,” I repeated as I towered over her.

“Why?” Nadine asked with her neck tilted up to see me. “Not because of me or anything, right?”

My head moved closer to hers with our mouths hovering, “Yes and no.”

“No,” she gasped. “We don’t even know each other.”

“We will.” I pecked her lips.

“Why are you so arrogant?” She asked as I laughed.

“Hmm,” I hummed as we stared at each other. “No interest in me at all, huh?”

She didn’t answer, which was my answer. My lips hit hers and in a frenzied fight for control, I holstered her up against the table as she tore at my hair. Attempting to guide me just like she wanted and God, I’d let her do whatever she deemed necessary if the threat of Pops going hungry or the food burning wouldn’t happen.

Pulling back, I heard Nadine’s heavy breathing and my own short breaths.

“Pops got to eat or he’ll lose his shit,” I told her. “I’m taking you home afterward.”

Nadine nodded her head and I let her slide down my body so she could stand up on her own. I also wanted her to feel how hard she made me and the dilation of her eyes told me she did.

“After,” I repeated.

“Yes.” Nadine nodded.

I left out, went upstairs to take a shower and as I was coming to my room, I was met by Pops.

“Son.” The way he said my name told me it was a warning. “Not sure what’s happening but I hope you got your affairs in order.”

“Yeah, Pop.” I confirmed. “Everything is in order. I have the green light.”

“You sure about that?” He asked. “Rebecca is squared away?”

“I wouldn’t move ahead if she wasn’t.” I replied.

He nodded with approval and said, “Don’t fuck this up like your brother. He is moping around in a drunken stupor because he wasn’t ready to claim the queen. Ya got to be ready.” Pops looked away. “Believe me, I know. You got to be ready for the real women or else they slip through your fingers like dry sand.”

That was the closest Pops had ever mentioned anything about wanting or losing something that he lost. I was probably inferring a lot, but I knew it was significant.

“Understood, Pops.” I nodded and went to my old room.

Then I heard him murmur, “I hope you do.”

We were raised in the old farmhouse and when we came over for dinner, we stuck to our childhood routines and would go to our rooms if we needed privacy or too drunk to drive. The bedrooms were literally left the same way since we last slept in them as young men. Since I worked on the farm with Pops, I spent a lot more time at his place, because mine was almost thirty minutes away. Most nights, I’d eat with him, since he would do the cooking, or I would hit up Sarah’s or another out of town diner. A man had to eat.

Dinner went by in a blur because all I could think about was Nadine’s tongue in my mouth. Those legs wrapped around my waist and letting the woman have her way.

Fuck.

She and Pops were comparing the meatloaf experience. Hers was actually really good, even Pops admitted to that fact. However, being the competitor that he was, Nadine had to come back for dinner next week to taste his meatloaf. She agreed, said her goodbyes and I drove her home.

“Well,” Nadine said with a nervous chuckle. “I’m home.”

It was dark and the only thing that lit the sky was the sliver of a moon and the sprinkling of stars throughout.

Without addressing the awkwardness, I hopped out my truck and opened her door. With my hand held out, I invited her to take mine, in order to guide her up the stairs.

Nadine’s eyes lingered on my offering and then she slowly placed her small hand in my larger one. We made it to the porch, where she opened the door and stepped inside. She turned towards me and said, “We should talk, right?”

Leaning against the doorpost with my arms above my head, I replied, “Probably.”

“Can we talk tomorrow?” Her eyes met mine. “You know. After?”

“Absolutely!” I swooped down, picked her up and kicked the door closed with my foot.

“Mills,” she laughed, but I didn’t stop until I saw what looked like a bedroom.

Stripping her clothes off, I immediately wrapped my lips around those brown breasts and began to nip on her nipples. Then I moved lower and sucked on her clit, until she came in my mouth.

“Mills,” she moaned as her hand grabbed what she could of my hair. “Yesssss.”

She tasted so fucking good, I didn’t want to stop, but I grabbed the condom from my pocket since my cock was straining against my jeans.

“Spread those legs for me,” I coaxed Nadine, as I kneeled over her in the bed.

I was stroking my cock before I put the condom on, to calm myself down. She was so sexy; my entire focus was on claiming her. I turned the woman on her side, slide the condom on and entered that tight pussy with her back flat on the bed. This allowed me to see her beautiful face, those big bountiful breasts moving up and down while I made her mine and hit that sweet spot.

Nadine screamed and creamed all over my long cock, but I kept pushing in and out of her tight heat. She was so gotdamn snug, my goal of not coming soon was quickly fizzling. I pulled out, turned her over, so her ass was on the bed, along with her back and began to pound away until I came and collapsed on her.

“Fuck, woman.” I hissed, as I tried to gain my composure.

“Let’s do it again.” She laughed back.

“Abso-fucking-lutely,” I replied.

MY EYES POPPED OPEN at the first break of the sun from the horizon. My clock was automatic and at five-twenty-three, I was up. No coffee, orange juice or tea. When I woke up this morning, a full curly head of dark hair was on my chest and a warm body partly draped over me.

Moving Nadine’s hair out of the way, she had her eyes closed and I could have sworn she was smiling in her sleep. It might have been wishful thinking but God, did I want that.

Not wanting to wake her, I slid from under her and wrote a note. There were so many things that needed to be tended to on the farm before ordinary people woke up. Pops and I had been doing it for years and honestly, I loved every moment. So, did Pops, but he couldn’t do it forever and we knew that.

Around eleven in the morning, I was managing the store with at least a few customers strolling along and a lot more in line. They knew that Thursday was the day of shipment for a lot of the CAN-IT products, so we offered a huge discount since they were manufactured locally.

I was so busy ringing folks up and getting them out, I didn’t see Nadine in line with nothing in her hand.

She had a small smile on her face and I had one twice as big on mine. A few folks looked at the two of us but we just stared at each other.

“You getting anything?” I asked.

“Nope, I don’t support this establishment,” she smirked. “The asshole that first served me has yet to apologize.”

I looked behind me, bent to look under the table and even lifted my head to the sky.

“What asshole?” I shrugged. “I’m almost certain he apologized three times last night.”

“No,” she shook her head as she leaned in with a whisper. “He made me cum three times, but I heard no apology.”

Fuck.

“Hmm,” I murmured. “We need to make sure he does that plus more.”

“Don’t know,” she shook her head. “Some people can’t multitask.”

I hopped over the gate and Nadine took off running.

“Bye, Mills,” she called. “Got to go in town.”

“Get back here,” I yelled.

Instead, she kept going and called back, “My Uber is here.”

Then she was gone.

Fuck.

My chest ached a bit. More than a little, if I were being honest.

Later, after the store was shut down and I stopped by Pops, he asked me the weirdest question.

“You see Ida around?”

Pops had never asked for Ms. Ida in all my years on this earth. Not one time and I should know because I lived the closest and worked with the man. He was always annoyed by her or at least telling her she could go back home.

“Naw, I haven’t.” I answered. “Why?”

His bushy salt and pepper eyebrows rose and then descended again.

“Just hadn’t seen her. I figured my meatloaf with her green bean casserole would go great. If you uh, see her, let her know. Will ya?” He asked.

“Yeah, okay. Sure, I can do that.” I nodded my head.

Once, I settled into my place, I looked up and saw it was six o’clock, which has been nearly four hours since I saw Nadine. With no number or a way to call her, I drove over the hill and saw that the lights were off. Either she was asleep or wasn’t home.

Where could she be?

Her courses would have ended by now.

I found myself sitting on her porch waiting for Nadine to return home. It wasn’t until eleven that she rode up in a nice car and hopped out of the back.

“Bye, Chris.” She waved with a giggle.

Who the fuck was Chris?

“Oh, Mills.” She smiled. “You scared me. What are you doing out here?”

I was already up and stalking towards her before I answered, “Looking for you. Who’s that?”

Nadine’s head slightly turned to the red lights of the car. “Oh, that’s Chris.”

“Right, who is Chris?” I asked, now in her space.

“Who is Mills?” She countered as the little thing stood her ground. “We’ve yet to define who Mills is.”

My head tilted to see where she was going with this conversation but then I just forged through. “Mills is that guy who asks you about any other guys.”

“Oh,” Nadine’s arms folded across her chest. “I should inform you about the other guys I may or may not be dating. That’s how Mills operates? Got it.”

She stepped past me and headed toward the porch. I nabbed her elbow and put us toe-to-toe.

“Stop,” I told her. “What do you want Mills to be?”

“Not sure, honestly,” She said as her eyes lingered on mine. “We never did have that talk.”

My head nodded as I realized we dived right into this frenzied sex thing and I wanted much more than that from her.

“Tomorrow, you and I will go on a date,” I told her. “Then we’ll talk and define who Mills is.”

“Hmmm,” she smirked. “What about tonight?”

“What about it?” I answered her question with a question. “Thought I had some apologizing to do.”

“That’s what I remember as well,” she laughed.

With one swoop, I had her in my arms with those legs wrapped around my waist. Making haste climbing the porch and opening the door, we ended in the bedroom, once again. However, this time, it wasn’t so frenzied. I pulled every single piece of clothing from her delicious body and took the time to savor it. After one flick of her clit with my tongue, I said, “I’m sorry for being rude the first time I met you.”

Nadine moaned in response, which told me that she forgave me. I apologized for kissing her when I shouldn’t have and for being possessive. Then I took that back, stopped flicking her clit and asked, “Who’s Chris?”

“Mills, really? Right now?” She snapped.

“Fuck, yeah.” I massaged the area right above her lower lips with my thumb.

“The damn Uber driver. There are only about one in this area.” Nadine was shaking her head. “Now, come on and stop playing.”

This pleased me, but I still smacked her wet pussy and watched her come apart as I sucked on her some more.

Damn, she was so gotdamn sexy. Her hands grabbed onto those D-cups and squeezed, causing the hard-on in my jeans to pulse.

“Twist,” I groaned.

My girl obeyed me and turned each hard nipple with her fingers, and I nearly came in my pants. Those dark brown points begged for my lips to suck, bite and chew on them.

“Shit,” I moaned as I kissed my way up towards my goal.

Scene:

The next morning to my surprise, Nadine was up before me, with the smell of breakfast and coffee in the air. After brushing my teeth with the packaged toothbrush she had in the medicine cabinet, I padded my way into the kitchen to see her putting the final touches on an omelet.

“Sweetheart, what are you doing up?” I asked.

“Trying to get you ready for your day. I didn’t want to miss you again.” She was smiling.

I stared at her for a long moment before moving to wrap her in my arms.

“You’re not this sweet.” I whispered in her ear.

She merely laughed and patted me on the chest.

“Come on and eat. I don’t want Pops to kill you.” She tried to move but I kissed her first.

It wasn’t long but filled with simmering passion. God, I could get used to this.

We ate, talked and laughed before she ushered me out the door.

Running the store was a blur as all I could think about was our date. In an attempt to not run across Rebecca and her crew, I planned to take Nadine out of town to have dinner. Then we’d go to the drive-in movie and get ices and popcorn.

That was the plan but the moment we pulled into Wades, I had a nagging feeling. Something wasn’t right but I didn’t find out until the next morning.
