Loving Ben Cooper (The Loving Series Book 1) by CC Monroe (2)

“WAKE-Y, WAKE-Y EGGS AND juicy bake-y!” My eyes fly open as my body flails around on the bed. Looking up I see my best friend, Kate, jumping up and down like a crazy person. Once I realize what’s happening, I settle myself by covering my bouncing arms over my eyes, doing my best to ignore her.

“Go away. I’m exhausted, Kate.” My groggy, tired voice sounds like I feel, over it and ready to shut down again. I’m so darn tired.

“Oh, no you don’t, Sister Christian. Up and Adam!”

“First off, I hate when you call me Sister Christian, it’s not a term of endearment, and did you say Adam?” I’m not sure if she meant that or if she really thinks that’s how the saying goes. I sit up on my elbows and watch her land her two feet on the floor at the foot of my bed.

“You know you love it when I tease and second, yes I did say Adam. I thought it was funny and made the perfect pun. Adam, like Adam and Eve, Sister Christian, the whole joke,” she says matter-of-factly with a quick chuckle, obviously proud at her play on words. Reaching for the pillow behind me, I roll my eyes and chuck it right at her smug little face.

Ha. Ha. You’re so funny,” I mock back. She really is the complete opposite of me. Kate is loud, eccentric, funny, and is far from modest with her words or body. She loves the company of men and she has the mouth of an at sea sailor. Kate tells me she believes in God, but she doesn’t practice any sort of religion like I do. I still wonder how the uptight Christian and carefree beauty became the best of friends.

She often says things that others would find offensive, but I just find beauty in the way she can be all things I sometimes wish I could be. Emotions are not high with Kate, she doesn’t really ever take anything too seriously. Sometimes I envy her lack of responsibility and her ability to live life to the fullest without ever thinking about the consequences. If I did things like Kate did, I would be repenting daily. Still, I envy it sometimes.

“I know. I’m quite the charmer. Now get that sexy little ass out of bed and let’s get ready.” Opening the door to my walk-in closet, she sets herself to work, digging through my clothes.

“Excuse me? No way, Kate. I just worked a twelve-hour clinical and I have a ton of studying to do over the weekend. I need to sleep.”

Sifting way too quickly through my closet, she whips her head in my direction giving me the best hard glare this side of town.

“No, you’re going out. We haven’t spent any girl time together in weeks and I need it. Besides, Grandma Jones, you need it too.” She steps out of the closet and I don’t reply right away. She places her hands on her hips and just shakes her head at me like I’ve done something wrong. “Good thing I brought backup. I mean do you not own one thing remotely appropriate for your age group? Did you buy all your clothes at Dress Barn?”

Okay, not all my clothes are that bad. I just choose not to wear anything revealing. My skirts are all below my knees and my tops all have sleeves and tend to be high neck. Shoot me, but my body is to be covered in respect. I made a vow to my Lord that only my husband would be able to see those intimate parts of me. So clothes that would show cleavage or my midriff don’t really have a place in my closet.

“There’s nothing wrong with my clothes. Some of us don’t think the whole world needs to see our private parts on full display, Kate.” I stand and move to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Looks like I’m going out tonight. Not because I want to, but because I know if I say no, I will spend the next hour listening to her whine and moan about how we never hang out. Which is somewhat true and I feel some guilt over it, but I can’t help that I’m busy. I don’t have a ton of time on my hands.

“No, but if you ever want to get laid you have to change what you wear. No man will talk to you looking like a nun.” She pulls out a crap ton of things from her bag and throws them carelessly onto my bed.

“You know, Mike likes me just the way I am,” I say around my toothbrush, standing in the bathroom doorway, watching her dig into her endless bag. What the heck is in that thing? She could fit a dead body in there. Her blonde hair is already curled, her cat green eyes are makeup free, and her curvy body is cased in yoga pants and a loose tank. She looks stunning even when she isn’t trying.

“Yeah, well, Mike must not like women. Some surprising shit might go down in ten or so years if you marry him.” I almost choke on my toothpaste. Mike and I have been dating for a few months now and I think he’s a nice stand up guy. I hate to admit that there’s no spark, but we’ve been friends since I moved here and it just seemed like the right thing to do. We practically do everything religion wise together, from bible study twice a week to sitting next to each other at church. My dad thinks the world of him as does my mother, seeing the kind stand up man of God and all. But for me, like I said before, there isn’t this dyer need to be with him—it all just kind of happened.

Spitting out my toothpaste, I rinse then walk back into the room. “Okay, he’s not gay, he just respects me. He likes me the way I am.”

“He has to be gay or he’s blind. I’ve seen you naked, Sadie Jay, and I must say if any man looked closely enough, you know past the eighteen hundreds attire, he wouldn’t be able to keep his fucking hands off you.” I swear she’s a male trapped inside a female’s body.

“He’s a gentleman,” I reiterate, no point in arguing with her.

“Whatever. Get dressed, try not to look like a nun and put on this tank! Oh and wear this lacy bralette!” Throwing the lacy bra at my face, she winks and I catch it with a shake of my head.

“Kate…Please, you know I would never.” Holding the barely there material by the strap, I sway it back and forth. This has to be a joke. How does she even wear this crap?

“It’s my night. I get to pick your outfit, so what I say goes! Now show off them sexy tatas for one night.” Bouncing to me, she slaps the top of my full heavy breasts. I squeak, grabbing them.

“You’re so annoying.” Conceding, I get dressed in the devil’s garments.
