Playing with Fire (New Hope Fire Department Book 1) by Kay Gordon (32)

Chapter Thirty-Two

Simon

“I’m so torn,” Phil said as he glanced around the baseball field. “Do I root for my son or do I root for my brothers?”

I frowned and nudged his shoulder. “Your son, of course.”

My mother and Megan both let out small laughs when Phil just shrugged.

“We’ll see.” He sent a wink Megan’s way and she just laughed again.

“Good luck, sweetheart,” my mom said as she pressed a kiss to my cheek and took Phil’s hand. I watched as the two of them walked to where Alex and Stacey were already sitting with the kids. Kelly had apologized earlier that day but told me she wasn’t coming. We’d gone out the night before to celebrate her twenty-sixth birthday and she’d consumed quite a bit of alcohol. I was pretty sure that the nasty hangover she had was a very unwelcome birthday present.

I stood with Megan off to the side of third base as we watched more people arrive. It was the biggest crowd we’d had all season and I knew that the Rollins Police Department, who we were playing, was good.

“How does your shoulder feel?” Megan asked, using her fingers to massage the offending appendage. My shoulder still ached occasionally even though it had been three weeks since I’d hurt it. I never complained but Megan’s watchful eyes didn’t miss much.

I let my eyes close at her touch. “If I say it hurts, will you keep doing that?”

“Simon.” Her tone was a warning and I reached up to still her hand.

“It feels fine, babe. No need to worry.”

Those were heavy words for Megan. Since the fire that had sent me to the hospital, she’d worried a bit more often about… everything. I had voiced my concern to my mother and she had just smiled at me with a nod.

“It’s the curse you carry when you love someone who is involved in such a dangerous line of work, Simon,” she’d explained. “Megan will never stop worrying for as long as she loves you. Don’t ever try to stop or mock her worrying because then you’re also dismissing how much she loves you.”

Her words had hit me hard. By Megan and me falling in love, I’d doomed her to a life of uncertainty and possibly to a fate that was similar to my mother’s. For a brief moment, I wondered if it would have been better for Megan if I ended our relationship and saved her that worrying and possibility of pain. As quick as that thought came, though, it was gone. I wasn’t strong enough or selfless enough for that. Besides, that would just create another level of pain that I wasn’t willing to inflict on her.

“Do I finally get my homerun tonight, Owens?” Megan asked quietly as she ran her hands up my chest until they were resting at the base of my neck.

I smiled and snaked my arms around her middle to pull her body against mine. “Literally or figuratively?”

“And what constitutes a figurative homerun for me?” Her voice had dropped to a hushed tone and she tightened her grip around my neck.

“It starts with my tongue between your legs,” I murmured, enjoying the way her body stiffened in my arms. “And that’s only rounding first, Megs. Want me to go on?”

She nodded at the same time she said, “No. Stop.”

“I’ll come around to second base when you come around my…” Megan’s hand covered my mouth to keep me from saying anything else and I couldn’t hold in my laughter. I grabbed her wrist in mine and kissed her palm gently. “I’ll stop but only because I have to go warm up in a few minutes.”

She looked around and shook her head gently. “That was mean.”

I pressed my lips to hers, letting them linger without deepening the kiss. When we parted, I straightened her hat and she grinned as she stepped out of my arms.

“Kick ass, Si.”

I gave her a quick swat on her ass as she walked away, earning a glare over the shoulder that lacked any conviction. I went to the bench to grab my glove and joined where my team was starting to warm up.

“You good, Jones?” I asked as I caught a ball that a guy from the 18th sent me. She nodded and caught her own easily.

“I’m good, Owens. How’s the shoulder?”

I rotated my poor appendage, as if to make sure it hadn’t started hurting in the last ten minutes, and shrugged. “It’s okay today. How’s the ankle?”

Irritation filled her face at the mention of her ankle. She’d been limited to light duty for two weeks because of it and was finally cleared earlier in the week.

“It’s fine. I’m just glad to be back to work.”

“Fuck,” Christos groaned as he threw the ball to Hughes. “I feel like shit.”

I chuckled, taking a look at my friend. He looked like shit, too. “That’s what happens when you drink your weight in alcohol. Kelly’s in bad shape, too.”

“That girl is fucking awesome.” He grinned slightly but winced in pain at the action. “Probably the coolest chick I’ve ever met. Sorry, Jones.”

“Don’t call me ‘chick.’ Even by insinuation.” Jones shot Christos a dirty look and I shook my head at them both.

We warmed up for a bit longer, did the national anthem, lost the coin toss, and started in the outfield first. The RPD was tough and we stayed a couple of runs behind them all game. During the seventh inning stretch I joined my family in the stands and Hudson gave me a serious look.

“You need to score some runs when you’re at bat, Uncle Simon. You guys are going to lose if you don’t.”

I chuckled and nodded my head. “Thanks for the advice, buddy. No pressure or anything, right?”

“You’re going to win though, right?” Kendra asked as she looked up at me and I bent over to kiss her forehead.

“I’m going to try, pretty.”

I met Megan’s gaze and she gave me a soft smile, one that said a lot without saying anything at all. Suddenly, I just wanted the game to be over so I could go home with her. As if she knew what I was thinking, she nodded and mouthed the words ‘home run’ and made us both grin like idiots.

In the seventh inning, I made it to first but was tagged out at second on the next hit. I didn’t get a chance to bat in the eighth inning because we received three consecutive outs in a row. We were able to hold RPD back in the top of the ninth, though, and when we went up to bat we were still down by two.

“Three runs and we can pull this off,” Christos said as he smacked me on the shoulder, looking better than he had at the start of the game. I winced slightly at the force but just nodded.

I watched my teammates make it to first and second before we received our first out. Jones went up to bat before me and she barely made it to first and avoided being tagged out. As I walked up the plate, I couldn’t help but chuckle when I turned to look at Megan. She was on her feet with her mouthed cupped as she cheered.

“Now’s the time for a literal homerun, Owens! You promised!”

I sent her a wink before turning around and swinging into the air a few times. When the first pitch came, I swung and missed it by a mile. The second ball almost hit me and I heard Megan boo from her seat. I swung at the third pitch and missed again, only barely that time.

“Come on, Owens! You can do better than that!”

The fourth swing I connected with it and started running at full speed, only to be called back halfway to first when it went foul.

“Shit,” I mumbled to myself as I picked the bat back up. I shook my head as I moved back into position and waited for the pitch. I knew the second I connected with it that it was a great hit. I kept my eye on it as I ran for first and ball soared deep over centerfield.

I had just rounded the base when it flew over the fence and out of range. I held my hands up in the air triumphantly as I crossed second and pointed directly at Megan, who was on her feet with everyone else but cheering so loudly that I could hear her perfectly.

I barely had time to cross home plate before she’d propelled herself into my arms. I caught her easily and slammed our mouths together, kissing her hard before putting her back on her feet.

“How was that?”

She laughed and shook her head as she pressed another kiss to my lips. “That was amazing. I’m so proud of you!”

I tucked my arm around her as my teammates swarmed us to celebrate excitedly. I had to let her go so we could shake hands with the RPD and thank them for a great game. I thought our Captain and the Captain of the 18th were both going to cry as they accepted the trophy.

I was finally able to make it to where my family was waiting and I accepted a hugs from everyone, even Stacey, but the kids were the most excited.

“You finally got your home run, Uncle Simon!” Kendra prattled happily and Hudson nodded seriously.

“I really thought you were going to strike out.”

I laughed and tickled his armpit until he was on the ground giggling. “You need to have more faith, dude. Think positive thoughts!”

“Well,” Phil said as he offered me a handshake. “I can’t think of a better group for the police department to lose to. I’m proud of you, son.”

Alex nodded in agreement as he lifted Kendra into his arms. “Nice hit, bro. Maybe next time, don’t give us such a heart attack, okay?”

My family left first and Megan and I hung back with some of my co-workers. Everyone was going out to party but I declined. I really wanted to do my own celebrating by myself with Megan. We bid our farewells and I led Megan to the truck slowly.

“Want to stop and grab some food to take home?” I asked her as we drove towards her apartment.

“Yeah, I’m sure Kelly would appreciate that.”

We stopped and grabbed two pizzas, one vegetarian and one double meat, before going home. Kelly was awake and very happy that we’d brought food. She still wasn’t feeling amazing but the pizza seemed to perk her up a bit. Megan told her about the game and Kelly immediately apologized for missing it.

“No need to apologize. I had a good amount of hecklers there between Phil, Hudson, and your sister.” I took a large bite of my pizza and looked at Megan pointedly.

She just shrugged and took a drink of her water. “It motivated you to win, right?”

“Couldn’t have done it without you, babe,” I said with a chuckle.

Kelly devoured three pieces of pizza and waved to us as she disappeared into her room with the bottle of ibuprofen. I helped Megan put away the pizza before following her into her bedroom. The second I was through the door, she closed it and gently shoved me so my back was against it.

“There were talks of a home run following the game,” she murmured while running her lips across my neck. Her hands trailed down my chest and stopped at the top of my pants. “I was thinking that since you took care of the literal homerun, maybe I could hit the figurative one?”

Her lips pressed against mine and our tongues met quickly as she unbuttoned my pants. I grabbed for the hem of her shirt and she stopped my hands with her own as she pulled her mouth from mine.

“No touching, Owens. Hands at you side, flat against the door.”

I did as she said and watched as she tugged my pants down to my knees. My boxers were next and I hissed when the cool air hit my rock-hard dick. Megan’s assertive actions had me so turned on that I felt like I was going to blow the second she touched me.

She dropped to her knees and her palms ran up my bare thighs, forcing me to dig my fingers into the grooves on the wooden door. Her fist closed around the base of my throbbing cock and she met my eyes as she leaned forward.

“Fuck,” I groaned, her eyes still locked on mine while her tongue ran along the underside of my shaft. Her tongue swirled along the head and I moved one of my hands to her hair. Megan pulled back immediately, my body crying out at the loss, and she shook her head.

“Hands off.”

“You’re serious about this?” I asked, my voice an octave higher than normal. She just stared at me and I put it back against the door. A smug smile appeared on her face as she directed my dick into her warm mouth, sucking instantly and making me feel lightheaded. I almost reached for her again but ran my hand through my own hair instead to keep it busy.

“Megan,” I murmured as she drew me deep in her mouth, sucking harder and faster as she did. Her mouth was fucking magic. I could feel my orgasm building quickly in my body. “Megan. I’m going to come.”

She kept her gorgeous eyes locked on mine, a glint of determination in them. I groaned loudly as my body began to vibrate and the climax washed over me forcefully. Megan’s movements slowed but she didn’t stop as she swallowed everything I gave her. My hands had moved to the back of her head at some point but she didn’t say anything as she pulled back and licked me clean, causing me to jump slightly.

She stood unhurriedly, pulling my boxers up as she did, and placed a kiss on the corner of my mouth. “You good?”

“Good?” I shook my head and wrapped my arms around her so I could pull her to my chest. “Good doesn’t even begin to cover it.”

She let out a small giggle and buried her nose into my neck. “I’m glad I could be of assistance.”

We broke apart so we could get ready for bed and she cuddled into my bare chest as soon as my head was on the pillow. I held her as close as I possibly could and inhaled her lavender scent, instantly feeling even more relaxed than I already had. I murmured my love to her, which she returned easily, and I fell asleep with everything I could ever want in my arms.
