Truth: Evan & Krystal (Safe Book 9) by Lucy Rinaldi (13)

Evan

Dinner with Krystal's parents has been more than just uncomfortable. Her mother walked into our little house with a scowl on her face. Looking around the place like we'd moved into a damn shack or something.

Cheeky fucking bitch.

This place is amazing. My parents built the place to look like a small house. It's perfect for what Krystal and I need right now. Who the fuck gave her the right to look at it like that?

That's not even the worst of it. The bitch took one look at Krystal in her white dress, scarf wrapped around her head and tied at the back of her neck, and literally gagged. Literally. Gagged!

What the fuck?

It was her father who asked what the hell was going on and why she looked like she'd been in a serious car crash. She does not look that bad. She's got cancer, the motherfucker. How does he think she's going to look?

Krystal explained what was wrong with her and why she didn't call to tell them. Her father understood, smiled sadly, and then told her that he loved her. Her mother, on the other hand, called her a selfish little bitch, who thinks of no one but herself.

I wanted to kick the bitch out and tell her never to fucking come back, but my mother walked through the door with my father and told me to calm down.

How the hell was I supposed to calm down? That cow was making the woman I love, my sick girlfriend, feel even worse than she already did.

Who the hell does that?

Right now, as we sit at the dining table in our small dining room just off the kitchen, eating pasta and salad, simply because Krystal can't stomach much else, her mother is giving off the feeling she has something she wants to say. I don't want her upsetting Krystal anymore, but if the bitch has something to say, she should just say it.

“Don't you think you're putting a lot on Evan's parents being the way you are? Surely it's not fair to them to have to look after you when you're like this?”

I can feel the sadness coming from Krystal. This old cow just made my girl feel like she's a burden to my parents. How and why did this woman ever become a parent?

“We love having Krystal here with us,” My mother says. “She's a wonderful woman. Not many women can boast that the women in both her son's lives are her best friends.” Krystal shoots my mother a genuine smile. That meant a lot to her. My mother is a good woman. I'm lucky to have her.

“Best friend?” Krystal's mother snorts before shoveling a forkful of salad into her mouth. “I've never understood why anybody would want anything to do with either of my children. Krystal has always fancied herself to be someone she's not. And Paul? Well,”

Paula,” Krystal interrupts. No good is going to come from tonight. I know, Krystal knows it, and so do my parents.

“What?”

“Paula. Her name is Paula, Mom.”

“My son's name is Paul. This Paula thing is just ridiculous.”

Veronica Bell is not the kind of woman who should ever have had children. She has no maternal instincts whatsoever. As for Paul Bell, he just sits back and lets his wife control everything. As a father, shouldn't he pull his wife up on how cruel she is toward his children?

“You're disgusting!”

“Krystal, do not speak to your mother like that!”

I guess not. It doesn't matter what his wife says, how much she hurts her children, she's always right in his eyes.

“Are you for real?” Krystal's eyes are so narrow they're barely slits.

I look at my father, who shakes his head at me. He knows I want to say something, but he also knows that only Krystal can do that. She needs to get this off her chest. It's time.

“How dare you come into my house and act like this. Lilah and Blair have been so good to me. If it wasn't for them, for Evan,” she grabs my hand, and I hold on tight, “I would be dead by now. Because I couldn't afford treatment, and I knew that you wouldn't help me.”

“How dare you, we are your parents!”

“Parents? Jesus, Mom! You're no parents to me. All my damn life you've treated me like a mistake you made one night. And you treat Paula like she's some fucking alien that came from your body! She is a beautiful woman, born in the wrong body! But she is now finally the woman she was supposed to be.”

“She is disgusting! She's no daughter of ours. She's as dead to us as the boy she used to be!”

“How could you be so cruel? She's your daughter whether you like it or not!”

“No! She is not. It is nothing to us and it never will be!”

It? Jesus, this woman is vile.

“Leave! I don't want you here. I knew you'd do this. I knew you'd behave this way. Why the hell did you even come here, Mom?”

“You've seen it, haven't you? You've had it in your house?!” Her mother is now on her feet. Krystal also. I stand beside her, she's not always steady on her feet these days.

“Don't you ever refer to my sister as “It” again, you vile old cow! She is ten times the woman you could ever be. She's perfect, Mom. You have no idea what you're missing out on. But if she is dead to you, then so am I.”

“Veronica, that's enough now.” Her father is a lot calmer than his wife, but I can see in his eyes that he agrees with her where Paula is concerned.

Old bitch pays no attention to him, though, “You vile little bitch, you deliberately kept this from us. Your illness, and the fact that thing has been seeing you! You have no respect for us whatsoever!”

No respect? This woman is crazy!

She turns her attention to me. “Call me when she dies. I'll send flowers.”

“Why you,”

“GET OUT!” My father bellows so loudly my ears are ringing. “Get the fuck out and don't you ever come back here!”

They say nothing to Krystal as my dad escorts them out of our house. We won't be seeing them again if I can help it. Disgusting people through and through.

Krystal collapses in my arms, sobbing her heart out. Even my mother is crying. To be honest, I feel a little emotional myself. How could her own mother be so cruel?

“It's okay,” I soothe while stroking her back. But that's a lie, it's so not okay. God, my poor, beautiful girl. I had no idea Krystal and Paula had such a hard time with their parents. They're vile in the way they talk about Paula. Her own damn parents!

“I'm so sorry, Lilah, Blair.” Krystal sniffs. “I didn't think she would go off like that. Even though Paula warned me.” She slumps down in her seat. “I don't know what Paula and I ever did to them.”

“Sweetheart,” My mother takes a seat beside Krystal and takes her little hand. “You have nothing to be sorry for. You are not your parents. Blair and I do not blame you for the way they behaved. We love you, Krystal, and we will be here for you always.”

“Thank you so much. I don't deserve any of you.”

“Why would you say that?” She looks at my father and shrugs slightly. “You and Paula have had a tough time with your parents, we know that. But you have us now, both of you.”

“Both of us?”

“Yes,” My dad smiles. “Both of you. You are both amazing young ladies, and we're honored to know you.”

“Thank you,” She cries in my arms for half an hour. By the time my parents leave, I've already put her to bed.

Now I'm sitting on the couch with a bottle of beer, wondering why any parent would treat their child the way Krystal's do. It's bad enough they treat Paula the way they do, but Krystal has cancer. Where the hell was the compassion? Don't they have hearts?

All I know is that I will never allow those people near Krystal again!
