Then William came and he stopped trying...we stopped trying. I felt more alone with him than I would have without him but he was such a good father. I made excuses for him...for the reason that he was never there for me. For the reason I was drowning in loneliness. As a couple, we were horrible...not with fighting or anything but I always felt like he was indifferent to me. That I was simply the hired help. As parents, we were unstoppable but maybe it was because we worked more as business partners than lovers...we were efficient because there was never an emotional side in our relationship.” Kat fell silent and snuggled more into my embrace, which I was only too happy to encourage.

“I wish I’d known you back then. I’d have swept you off your feet and never looked back,” I commented, and realized how ridiculous that sounded considering our age difference.

“It’s pointless wishing for things to have been done differently in the past because it doesn’t change the here and now.”

“Your ex is a bastard for the way he’s treated you, and I can’t change how I feel about that, or about you. In fact, I don’t want to change how I feel about you. Ever.”

“Don’t get me wrong, there were a few good times over the years, but they all involved our sons. No matter what I think of him and his extracurricular activities, he is still the father of my children.” She chuckled. “Even if my kids are married and starting their own families. I love it when they come home to visit. Not just because I love them, but also because Mike is friendly toward them. He loves his sons and, at the end of the day, that’s all that matters to me.”

“We get on so much better. A younger woman will come along for you one day, and where will that leave me?”
