Box of Hearts (The Connor's Series Book 1) by Nikki Ashton (31)

Jesse

I was fucking petrified at what I had committed to with Millie; not because it wasn’t what I wanted, but because I just hoped to God that I didn’t let her down. For so long I’d been a miserable bastard, I wasn’t sure I knew how to be a good man any more. But, if anyone could help me make that change it would be her. She made me want to be better.

She’d been real quiet for about ten minutes, and she was leaning heavily against me, so I was pretty sure that she’d fallen asleep. Dillinger was a good, steady, and calm horse, and his gentle gait made sure she didn’t wake. I tightened my arms around her and breathed in her smell, thankful that she was safe.

When I’d told her that I couldn’t be with her, I’d meant it. I had feelings for her, real ones that were growing deeper every damn day, but the guilt and fear that I was being disloyal to Melody was greater. Until I thought she might be in danger, and then I realized that there was nothing that could keep me from being with her. I, above everyone, knew that life was too short, and if I went from this life not trying to be with Millie, then it would be a life half lived. My only worry now was Brandon. I wasn’t sure how he was going to take me and Millie being together.

As I thought about how to tell my best friend that I’d stolen the woman he wanted, the very object of his affection stirred in my arms.

“Hey, beautiful,” I whispered against her ear. “You enjoy your little nap?”

“Hmm,” she moaned sexily and stretched out her arms.

I peeked over her shoulder, knowing that with the arch of her back, those gorgeous tits of hers would be pushed forward. Yep, even with my shirt on, I could see the luscious swell of them.

“We nearly home yet?” she asked.

“Ten more minutes. I just hope Mom saved us some dinner, I’m starved. It’s almost ten and I haven’t eaten since midday.”

“Yeah, me too.” She shifted in the saddle, pushing her backside into my dick that was already uncomfortably hard.

“Quit moving, baby,” I said. “I do not want to go into the house with a steel rod dick tenting my jeans.”

Millie’s head shot around and she gave me a narrow eyed glare, but her mouth was curled into a smile and I knew she was feeling frisky.

“You fancy spending the night in the cabin with me?” I asked.

I needed to sleep with her in my arms, but wasn’t sure how Mom and Dad would feel about me doing it in the house. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it until I told Addy.

“I don’t know,” she replied. “What about Addy? What if she needs you? She’s got used to having you there.”

Suddenly, I felt like the biggest shit ever where my daughter was concerned. The fact that Millie had thought about her, though, warmed my fucking heart to Millie even more. I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and then rested my chin on her shoulder.

“Yeah, you’re right. How about I come visit you in your room, and set an alarm in case we fall asleep?”

Millie’s room was at the back of the house, away from Mom and Dad’s and my old room, where Ruby was sleeping. Yes it was closer to Addy, but she always slept soundly, and if she did wake I’d hear her.

“In fact, I think there’s an old baby monitor in her closet, how about I bring that in, too?”

Millie thought about it for few seconds and then nodded. “Okay, but you need to check with your parents first. Make sure it’s okay with them.”

“Millie, honey, I’m twenty-six years old, and it’s officially my house, so I don’t really want to be asking my mom and dad if it’s okay if me and my girl have a sleepover.”

Millie started to giggle.

“What?” I asked.

“You called me your girl.”

“And you are, or did I imagine that deep and meaningful conversation in the woods, followed by a sexy as fuck make out session?”

“No, but it’s just so…country,” she laughed again and buried her face in her hands. “Sorry, but I feel like a teenager.”

“God, you’re crazy,” I groaned and nipped at her ear. “But, if you really want me to I’ll ask my mom and dad if it’s okay to fuck you in your bed tonight.”

“Jesse!” she cried. “You can’t do that!”

“Just watch me,” I growled. “You unleashed the beast, so now you have to take the consequences.”

As we both sighed happily, the house came into view and a feeling of contentment swept over me. It was a nice surprise because I hadn’t felt that way about this house for a long time. It hadn’t felt like home for two years, but seeing it now, I knew it was the only place I wanted to be.
