Cross My Heart by S.N. Garza, Stephanie Nicole Garza (22)

The rest of the week was uneventful with the wicked piranhas of the town but the library had been busier the last two days. I’m sure it’s because of me working there. But about fifteen people had come in to get a library card and actually looked around to get books.

At the end of Friday, when the doors were finally locked, Rhona gestured for me to follow her to the back where the employees could sit and eat lunch and stuff. But this evening, all the women who worked there–only six of us, were sitting around the round table, Mrs. Rodes in the back with a bright smile on her face.

“Ladies, I must say, I haven’t seen so many people come into the library since, well, ever.”

“Yeah,” Margaret, the new junior librarian who was in her thirties laughed, “we should have hired a girl like her before.” A look of embarrassment passed over her face as she looked at me. “Not that you’re bad, like that. I’ll shut up, now. Sorry.”

“It’s okay. I’ve never even been in a library before here so I don’t know what to expect. I’m just a commodity. I hope.”

“It will die down. The wicked girl turned librarian. It’s actually pretty cool.”

The others agreed and we all laughed.

“Where did you go to college at? Surely you stripped to pay for school. With them being so terribly expensive, I mean, hell, maybe I should, and I have loans up the wazoo.”

“I didn’t go to college. I dropped out of high school when I was sixteen so I could help my mother with her medical stuff.”

A bald faced lie but no way was I telling them the real truth. I’d die of embarrassment.

The girls, even Rhona, looked shocked. “You mean, you’ve worked at a club since you were that young?”

“Yes. It’s okay, though, I didn’t really have plans to do anything major with my life.”

“Would you want to go back to high school?”

“Oh no! I couldn’t do that over again.”

“I mean, like get a GED? You could always apply online to get your high school diploma. It’s not too hard. And you do work in a library. We could totally help you out.”

“I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know how long I’ll be here for.” Shit. I didn’t want to say that in front of these people.

Rhona looked sad and the other girls looked towards Mrs. Rodes who nodded before they all got up, patting me on the shoulder as they left. What the hell was going on?

Only Rhona stayed behind with Mrs. Rodes.

“Evony. You’re a smart girl. You’ve been here a week and saw how all the women looked at you. It wasn’t so long ago that I was you.”

“What?”

“No, I was never a stripper, but I was a pin-up model. And a playboy bunny.”

“Wow, Mrs. Rodes. Rock on.”

She smiled, giving me a saucy wink. “I didn’t let that stop me. This was my hometown. I stole one of their servicemen. The best there was at that time. They hated me, and at times I thought how could he have chosen me? A girl with all the wrong qualities, and you know what he told me? He told me I was a beautiful person. In and out and that I should never let anyone make me feel less that what I was. Priceless. No amount of money could ever take me away from him because to him I was his world. I still am, the silly old coot. So if you want to stay here, then stay. You don’t need Gavin to be worth anything. You are priceless, darling. Most of us start our lives from a dark place. Some darker than others. It just depends on how we choose to live with it and overcome it or to keep dwelling on things that we can’t change. Your past is just that. Your past. It doesn’t define you. Be whoever you want to be, Evony. No one can make you feel less than priceless. That is something you will have to learn. You are beautiful, inside and out. I’m not just saying that either. I don’t talk to too many people about my past. You don’t need a man to feel good about yourself. But I’ve heard from George about Gavin and how he’s always willing to go the extra mile and never stops until the job is done. His mother came all over this town trying to find him a keeper since he just can’t ever find someone to be with. About how he never stopped talking about the girl from his childhood and how much he missed her. You mean more to him than you’ll ever know. Give him a chance.”

“But there are things he doesn’t know. I could never give him anything more than my body. I don’t want to ever get married, I don’t plan on—

“It’s okay, Evony. Let us help you.”

Rhona reached out and grabbed my hand in hers and squeezed.

“Evony. Start living. Do not be afraid to show your real self.”

“Yeah, and what’s my real self?”

“Look in a mirror. Really look. Tell yourself these three things. You are smart. You are beautiful. You are priceless and no one can ever replace you. Okay, four but still. And only you can answer those. Now, enough with the heavy. Why don’t you girls go have fun?”

“There is a club about ten minutes away, they have great music, drinks. Not that I drink, but I like to sit and watch. God, I’m pathetic.”

“Let Evony help you, Rhona. I think you two will be good for each other.”

She got up and walked out, closing a door at the end of the hallway. Her office probably. It would be good to go out and have some fun. Good old fashioned girl fun. Not that I ever had girl fun before but this week has taught me that Rhona was a genuine woman. But the tent dresses had to go.

“Do you have anything that isn’t so…tent-ish?”

Her laugh was small and insecure. “Not really. I was raised to really keep it all covered.”

“That’s cool. We’ll make sure you keep everything covered. I need to do some shopping anyway. I really have nothing but these jeans and a ton of leggings. Like many leggings. Since I didn’t really get out much, I didn’t need to get many casual clothes. So where’s the nearest mall?”

“You sure about this? I mean, Mrs. Rodes means well, but I don’t know. You don’t have to hang out with me.”

“I want to. I don’t have any friends here and Gavin is wherever he is. I say let’s. What harm could it do? I don’t drink either.”

“Okay. There’s not really much of a mall, but a strip center with clothing stores.”

“Yeah, been there, done that. Don’t really want to go in those shops. Those women are evil.”

“Yeah. They could be. Uh, there is a thrift store down the street. I sometimes shop there.”

“Don’t be embarrassed. You can actually find some badass stuff there. Let’s go.”

I got up and waited for her to follow out and I looked around to find where her car was but only Gavin’s truck was sitting in the parking lot.

“Where’s your car?”

“Don’t have one. I walk here.”

I nodded and said, “Cool. Hop in! Or climb in.”

We both laughed and we made our way to the thrift store. I was actually amazed they had clothes that were still fashionable. I rifled through the jeans, looked at Rhona’s petit frame and her eyes widened as I thrust a pair of skinny jeans in front of her.

“Oh, no. I couldn’t. Those look tight.”

“You’re wearing them. Follow me.” I walked over to the shirts and looked at their selection. There was a white one with a white tiger on it and with her hair, it would be perfect. “Come on. You’re gonna look great!”

We paid out, with me picking up a shirt as well and I only paid a whopping fifteen dollars. We left and got back in the truck.

A few hours later, I had her and myself ready. “Damn. We did good.”

I had rewashed my jeans so they fit just right, the black strapless shirt I bought hugged my figure, pushing up my tits high and matching Chuck’s. I’d wear heels but I wanted to be comfortable and Rhona was wearing ballet flats.

I changed up my signature braid into one that made me look like some Viking shield maiden and painted on a red lip stain that made my lips full and drastic with a smoky eye. Not too bad.

I had done Rhona’s make-up, light, but smoky. She had asked me to braid her hair too, so instead of one long braid I fixed her hair in several, leaving long tendrils of her wavy hair loose. Stunning had nothing on her. The skinny jeans we got her, I decided to make them distressed, so I with a box cutter I found in Gavin’s glovebox, I made some worn areas and with a little sandpaper, I made it all frayed up. She looked sexy and cute.

It was about ten when I locked up and when we got to Red Light dance club, there wasn’9t a wait line. Only a few smokers outside dragging on their cigarettes.

We paid the bouncer and a fast paced song was blaring through the speakers.

“Wanna dance?”

“Oh, no. I couldn’t.”

“We came here to have fun, Rhona. I’ll help. I’ll be there. Trust me. I know what I’m doing.”

“Okay! I trust you.”

I took her hand and sifted through the dancers until we had a little bit of room. Merry Go Round sung by The JaneDear Girl’s came on and it was perfect to get Rhona loose and relaxed.

“Just follow my lead.” It took her about half the song and soon she had her hands in the air, shaking her hips and smiling like she had no idea she could dance like that.

The songs were a mix between country, rap, and pop. Then Skin by Rihanna came on. It was more provocative, but I let the music take over and Rhona and my body infused along with all the other sweaty bodies and it was like this erotic release was lent out into the air.

There was no past, present or future. Just hot, sexy fun. Made me wonder if Gavin could dance. To feel his body right behind me and the hard lines of his muscles at my back, his hard length against my ass, his big hands on my hips. Then picturing him naked, fucking me hard from behind. I wanted him to have every single part of me.

I’ve never went down on a man, and my mouth was just watering at the thought of his long hard dick pushing passed my lips and sucking the hard flesh into my mouth.

It was so fucking hot feeling his tongue licking around the rim of my ass. Never imagined he was as fucking dirty as that. Made me wonder what it would feel like if he tried putting his dick there.

No. I’m getting way ahead of myself.

Just thinking about him was making me hot as hell. I hadn’t heard from him all week and I was getting horny as fuck.

I let my hands take Rhona’s hips and directed her to the beat of the music until the song finally ended and our bodies were against each other’s. She turned around, this goofy grin on her face and then—holy fuck.

She reached up and kissed me. It was just a small peck, but whoa. Was she?

She laughed and I couldn’t help but laugh with her. That’s when I noticed the silence of the crowd. We both looked around and then I could feel the humiliation radiating off Rhona.

So I did the only thing I could to make this less awkward since most people knew I was staying at Gavin’s. Especially those bitches I met when I first got here.

I didn’t want them saying shit about Rhona, so I cupped Rhona’s neck, placed my hand around the bubbly ass she had and kissed the hell out of her. Using my tongue as Gavin used it on me before letting go.

“Ready to go?”

“Yeah.”

“Hold your head up high, girl. No shame.”

She nodded and we both walked out calmly, my hand around her waist.

I won’t admit it, but my heart was pounding hard in my chest. That’s going to be around the entire town before midnight. Hell, I could already feel the buzz of cell phones buzzing with texts messages.

Haven’t they ever seen girls kiss before? Was Rhona a lesbian? Not that I cared, but I’ve never had a girl kiss me before. One of the girl’s at Gentleman’s Fancy was bi-sexual, but I never saw her bring her personal life into the club.

I drove to Rhona’s small efficiency apartment in town, and when I parked the car, she looked at me with this innocent excitement.

“Sorry. I’ve never kissed a girl before. I don’t think I swing that way, but the heat of the song, the way we were dancing, it just felt like the right thing to do at the time. I’m sorry if I made things awkward.”

Honestly, it was awkward, but I didn’t care what people thought about me. They had already formed an opinion of me before I ever got to this town. The kiss wasn’t that bad though. She had some fruity chap stick on her lips so at least it didn’t taste weird.

She unlatched the seat belt and with her bubbly excitement said, “Let’s do this again tomorrow!”

“Uh. I don’t know.”

“Come on! Let’s fine one that’s in the city! Where no one’s going to care who we are.”

“You mean where no one knows who I am?”

Laughing, she said, “That, too. But who cares? They are all gonna say something about me now. I don’t care what people think. My sense of self is secure.”

“I—okay. You do the research, I’ll get the clothes. I’ll be at your place at seven so we can get ready since the city is like, what, an hour away?”

“Yeah. That sounds great! Thanks, Evony. I have a great feeling about this!”

Glad one of us did. I waited until she was in her building before going back to Gavin’s. We hadn’t stayed that long but the awkwardness of the situation made it impossible to stay. Maybe tomorrow would be better. At least in the city no one would know me.

Hell, us. Monday was going to be weird. Especially if what happened tonight spread like wild fire. Which I knew would. What would Gavin say about it? It was just an innocent kiss. And with a girl.

I mean, no harm right?
