Kingston

I wanted freedom, but I surrendered instead. In a moment of unadulterated passion, I lost myself, once again to the same girl. The pain and anger melted with her moans, as I kissed her with reckless abandon.

My inhibitions and doubts cowered under the weight of my passion. My tongue fought with hers, claiming her mouth, my hands following behind, marking every curve of her petite body and remembering how it felt to feel her crumble. Her moans were an anthem to my soul, waking me up, pulling me away from my misery.

I no longer knew where I was as my hands found their way under her shirt and my fingers bit into her soft, shivering skin. Even now I knew what she needed, what her body craved. She craved to be possessed, to be broken down into ecstatic little pieces as I dominated every breath in her body. I was no longer in my senses, enslaved by this twisted connection we shared. My knee pushed between her legs, making a slight tear in her dress as I spread her legs apart. She cried out as my erection thrust into her stomach, my hand travelling up her back, nimbly unstrapping her bra. She shivered as my hands squeezed her breasts, my fingers pinching her nipples. Our kiss broke as she cried out, and I leaned down, taking the opportunity to catch her nipple into my mouth, wetting her gray shirt in the process. She clawed at my back in desperation. Even after all these years, her body reacted the same way it had the very first time I’d touched her. She’d given herself so completely, trusted me, with blind faith.

I let go of her nipple and traveled up her neck, nipping and kissing her, reaching her lips just as my hands pulled out of the shirt, running down her thighs, craving her wetness. I lifted her by her hips, and she instinctively wrapped her legs around me, thrusting herself against my erection. I grunted and bit her lip, lifting her skirt, pushing her underwear aside.

“Kingston,” she moaned, as my thumb gently pressed her sensitive nub. “Don’t,” she begged, but her body contradicted her actions, pushing itself even closer to mine. Her breasts crushed into my chest, her hips timidly thrust forward, and her hands pulled my hair.

She kissed me harder, shutting up her hesitation.

I reached to pull her underwear aside when a girl’s voice ripped through my fog.

“Oh! I am so sorry.”

Our bodies went completely still as we both struggled to climb down this moment, realizing we were in an alley, making out in broad daylight like a couple of teenagers.

Vienna buried her face in my chest as I unwrapped her legs and eased her feet to the ground.

“I…uh…” The girl struggled to say something as she stood there, embarrassed at catching us in such a compromising situation. “You didn’t pay,” she blurted.

Vienna hastily adjusted her clothes, avoiding my gaze, trying but failing to tame her curls back into place.

Our eyes met for a few seconds before she leaned down to grab her purse. Before I could collect myself, she ran.

I drove back to work with our lunch, my mind reeling from what had just transpired. What had gotten into me?

Vienna, my mind whispered.

She’d been the reason behind the annihilation of my control. Her goddamn honesty had undone me, unleashing a part of me I thought had died the night she’d left.

The reminder cut through me. She’d run once again, leaving me behind to deal with the repercussions.

The past came forth, taunting me, making a fool out of me.

I pushed the pedal harder, seeking solace in speed, but I couldn’t help but relive her moans as she’d shivered in my arms, giving in. What would’ve happened had we not been interrupted?

I no longer fought with myself, making peace with my decision. I would never ween myself from Vienna. Alex’s concern still plagued me, but I could no longer put him before my heart. I’d become selfish. Fate had pushed me to make a decision, to choose, and I’d chosen. Once again, I chose my demise in the guise of Vienna, over my family, over my future, over myself.

My phone rang; it was my mom. I picked up, not wanting her to worry. I’d missed five calls from her since yesterday. “Hey, Mum.” I merged into the next lane. I still had a while before I got to work. Hopefully, that would give Vienna enough time to calm herself and be back to normal once I walked into her office, closed her door, and finished what we’d started in that alley.

“Been busy, King?” She was sharp and to the point. She spoke her mind, unafraid of anything life threw at her. Her support, along with my father’s constant guidance, had made me the man I was today. She was my strength, the one person who supported my decisions and stood by me through it all.

She’d been there when my father had fought with his paralysis, and I’d had to take over the business. She’d pushed me past my hesitations. Even when Alex and I fell out, she’d stood by me, knowing very well what I’d done, without a speck of judgment, trusting in my decisions.

“Yes, work’s been hectic.”

“You and Alex will see things through.”

“We always do, at least in work.”

“Alex is still holding on.” A slight smile crept into her question as she sensed perfectly what I was thinking.

“Not his strongest suit, letting go.” I drove into the parking lot. “I talked to him today, but I guess he wants to keep holding the entire Vienna debacle over me.”

“It wasn’t a debacle, King. You fell in love. Alex just needs to understand that he and Vienna weren’t meant to be. I knew Vienna, and I knew her to be a wonderful and perceptive young girl. Even at that age, she knew exactly what she wanted, and that wasn’t Alex. You and Vienna made sense—still make sense.”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” I parked the car, hating every bit of this conversation. I needed time to sort through my feelings before my mother jumped in and started meddling.

“Let me finish and I’ll never bring it up again.”

“Mel’s been filling you in, I take it?”

“Yes, she has, and Vienna deserves a second chance, King.”

“Why?”

“Because something’s off. Vienna was never afraid of a confrontation, let alone leaving things incomplete. If she ran away from you, there has to have been a reason behind it.”

“So I’ve been told.” I exhaled in frustration, fighting between faith and experience.

“You’re not over her, Kingston. You never will be. She’s it for you, and once you allow yourself to focus on now and not the past, you’ll find everything you’ve ever been looking for. You are fated.”

Words failed me, arguments ceased to exist. My mother’s words cut through my bullshit, leaving me with nothing but the truth.

And yes, I knew we had a connection, and I intended to pick up where we’d left off today, but as for a future? A relationship with her? Could that be possible as well? But…

“Stop concerning yourself with Alex. He’s a grown man about to get married. If he can’t let go of his past for a future with Chloe, there’s no one to blame but himself.”

“He loves Vienna.”

“He doesn’t. He loves the idea of being with Vienna. He’s holding onto a teenage fantasy. It’s his battle to fight now, Kingston, not yours.”

I drank in every word my mother said, shedding the last shackles that had kept me tied up. Maybe I’d never have Alex’s blessing when it came to Vienna, but my mother had just given me hers, and that meant the world. My conviction rose, my desire awoke. Saying goodbye to my mother, I stepped out, ready for answers.

I walked toward Vienna’s office, passing through cubicles, uncaring of the attention my presence was garnering. I knocked on Vienna’s door. No response.

I tried pushing the door open, but it was locked. Where was she?

“Vienna left.” A voice from one of the cubicles made me turn.

“No, she never came back after lunch.” A middle-aged lady spoke from the cubicle facing Vienna’s office.

“Thanks.” My conviction tightened with rage as I walked toward the elevator. I was done waiting.

It was time Ms. Roy stopped running and gave me some fucking answers.
