Hide and Seek: A Rock Games Novel: Vol. 2 by Nicole S. Goodin (18)

“So, are you going to tell me what the hell is up, or are you just gonna keep strolling around like some kinda pompous prick same as you have been for the past two weeks?” Parker demanded from where he was sitting, watching me.

“Tough choice, but I think I’ll go with door number two.”

I carried on mixing the eggs I was making for breakfast, whistling an upbeat tune.

I couldn’t think of anything but her telling me she loved me. She said it every single day and there were seriously no better words in the world.

“Seriously? Whistling? You have got to be getting laid.”

“Maybe I am,” I mused.

“Holy shit, you are! I fuckin’ knew it! I told Charlotte you were getting your end away.”

“And what did she have to say about that?”

He chuckled. “She told me to mind my own damn business.”

“Smart girl that one, you should listen to her.” I tipped the eggs into the pan and busied myself with finding a spatula.

I hated lying to Park. I never lied to him… ever. But I was now. For her.

It wasn’t so much lying as it was avoiding the truth, but essentially that was the same thing, and I didn’t feel any better for it.

I had to admit though, all the sneaking around was actually kinda fun. My excitement levels were through the roof, and having to play it cool when we were in company added another level of anticipation for the time we did have together.

Being in a room full of people and being the only two in on a secret was oddly arousing.

I was tired as shit though – sneaking around meant if I wanted to have guaranteed uninterrupted time with my girl, I had to stay up half the night. Not that I was exactly complaining, it was a hell of a way to spend a night, but I was starting to think it would be a lot easier to just come clean.

“You really not gonna tell me who this chick is?”

I didn’t answer.

“Fine… but whoever this girl is, or guy… sorry, I shouldn’t just assume…”

He was trying to provoke me; I knew that as well as he did.

I’d never been one to bite.

I chuckled and shrugged. “You know my motto, Park, always try everything once.”

Parker wasn’t quite as controlled when it came to not taking the bait.

“Seriously? A dude?” He gaped. “I mean… that’s cool man… I just… I… didn’t know.” He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, clearly lost for words.

He was just too easy; fucking with him wasn’t even a challenge these days.

I couldn’t help it; I burst into a fit of laughter.

“Holy shit… the look on your face is the best thing I’ve seen all week.”

I wiped the tears from my eyes and scooped the eggs out of the pan and onto the two plates on the counter.

“Fuck’s sake, J, can you just give me a proper answer for once?”

I snorted. “Unlikely.” I shoved a plate at him. “Your breakfast is ready.”

He snagged his phone and typed out a quick message.

I smirked. “You just text Little Red to see if she thinks I’m into dudes, didn’t you?”

“How the hell do you know that?” he demanded.

I chuckled. “I can read you like a book, man. Always could.”

“Would be great if that worked both ways,” he grumbled as his phone dinged.

“Gotta have a bit of mystery, keep the spark alive and all that.” I winked at him, my laughter barely restrained again.

He read her reply and laughed.

“What’d she say?”

He glanced at the message again and grinned. “She said… ‘Hell to the freakin’ no, fool, that man is all about the titties and the girl bitties’.”

I nearly spat out the mouthful of orange juice I’d just drank.

Charlotte was hilarious. And she didn’t beat around the bush either.

“If you don’t marry that girl one day I’m gonna have to kick your ass.”

“If I don’t marry that girl one day I’ll have to kick my own ass.” He shot me a shit-eating grin and shovelled a mouthful of food into his mouth, apparently now satisfied that I hadn’t turned bisexual overnight.

I smirked to myself at my successful attempt to distract my best mate from the love life I actually was hiding.

Too easy.
