Calamity (Beautiful Destruction Book 1) by Lexi Barr (28)

“What the hell was that?” Uncle Joe hissed when we walked back toward our parked cars.

Kelsey tried to invite herself to whatever bullshit lunch Joe had planned, but I blew her off. I wasn’t even sure if I was going at this point.

“What?” I asked, playing innocent to buy myself time before we reached our separate cars and I could drive off. I didn’t need to explain myself to him.

“Are you fucking kidding me? You just practically had sex with another girl while I was talking to your girlfriend. Do you know how awkward that was? What the hell has gotten into you, Liam?” He waved his hands around animatedly; the way Luna did when she was passionate about something.

“She’s not my girlfriend.”

Fuck. I knew Luna would see what happened with Kelsey, but I didn’t consider how shitty it would feel to see the look of betrayal she wore when our eyes met. She looked broken, shock from my deceit painted clear across her face.

But I didn’t intend on breaking her. I didn’t even want her to show up to Mom’s funeral in the first place and I’d told her as much. I could tell she was dancing around the subject, but my detachment made her nervous. Good. It should have. She broke up with me. I didn’t owe her anything.

I still didn’t want to touch Kelsey. I couldn’t stand that bitch, especially knowing her involvement with Monti and the club. She couldn’t be trusted, and she knew that showing up at Mom’s funeral the way she did would piss me off. All the drugged-up whores at the club who supported Mom's addictions weren’t invited for a reason, yet they took it upon themselves to come along anyway.

After Luna walked away, she tried to spew some jealous bullshit, but I shut her down. She didn’t compare to Luna, and she had no right even speaking her name. Neither of us did.

Then, she started talking about Monti, and how she and he had been hooking up. How that fucker landed someone like Kelsey was beyond me, but her glazed eyes gave me a clue—he was supplying her with whatever high she was chasing these days. I took advantage of the information that she was easily handing over, proving I was right to never trust her loyalty.

Then, she smashed her lips into mine in a hard, desperate, pathetic kiss and I punished her in return. I smacked her back against a nearby tree and chewed on her lips, doing anything I could to cause her pain.

The crazy bitch enjoyed it, though, moaning into my mouth every time I tried something new. Joe called my name and pulled me from my angry daze. When I turned to answer, Luna was staring back at me like I had just killed her dog.

The frustration I saw swimming around her beautiful round eyes was like the one she wore at her parents during their intervention. This time, it was aimed at me, and if I didn’t feel so detached, I would have been cowering down to her, begging for forgiveness. She was terrifying. But instead of trying to pull her out of the storm, I let her fall further into the eye of it. I watched it consume her, and then I let her walk away.

Paralyzing guilt flooded me at the sight of her, but I refused to let it linger. I was on a mission, and Luna was better off staying away from me before she realized what I’d become since waking up the devil inside me. I wouldn’t chase after her, despite the burning need I felt in my legs to do so. She was safer without me, anyway.

Kelsey told me Monti was doing a drop-off at an auto shop downtown in two nights. There was almost too much time to contemplate and back out, but I’d make sure that didn’t happen. I just needed to stop at my hotel room first.
