Believe Series box set by L Chapman (36)

Today is the day we set aside to go to the venue one last time before the wedding. I have always wanted a traditional wedding and when it came time to pick the venue, I said it had to be a church. I did not care which one, so Rich suggested the little church he was christened in since it is located in the town we just moved to. It’s a quaint looking church. I didn’t want to get married too early in the day, so we chose two in the afternoon, that way I have time to get ready. The reception will be posh because we are hosting it in a castle.

I slowly open my eyes. The sun is blaring straight through the window towards me, so I pull the cover up over my face.

“Oh, babe, are you not a morning person?” I hear him say.

Oh my, last night was not a dream. I look under the cover to discover I am naked, just as I suspected. I roll over to see Warren lying there with his shoulder bent to raise him a bit higher.

“Hi,” I reply, sheepishly.

He still looks amazing, but I should not be here. I should be at home waiting for Rich, the man I am marrying in a matter of days. Last night was the best night of my life. Ever. I cannot stop smiling. So naughty, but nice. Is it bad that I want to do it again? Warren was so wonderful, so gentle, yet so exciting at the same time.  I never knew what he was going to do next, and it made the sex that much better.

I shake my head; I need to stop thinking about last night. I need to go home and tell Rich what I did. Tears start to roll down my face.

“Hush, babe. What’s wrong?” Warren questions, placing his arm around me. I push back against him, freeing myself from his grip. I sit up on the side of the bed.

“Where is my stuff?” I ask while trying to hold back the tears.

“Here,” he says as he passes my clothes to me.

I sit there slipping on my underwear then adding my heels.

“Jen, what’s wrong?” He asks, appearing beside me fully dressed.

“Nothing,” I say, slipping my dress over my head.

“Tell me,” he says, his normal calm voice now a firm tone.

I shake my head. Warren gently pushes me back onto the bed. “Tell me,” he repeats in a pleading manner.

“I’m getting married in a few days. Last night shouldn’t have happened.” I stare into his eyes, waiting for his reaction.

“Okay. I’ll drop you back off wherever you need to be. No one ever has to know what happened between us.” I can tell he is hurting because his eyes turn dull and their usual sparkle is gone.

“Thank you,” I reply, taking a deep breath. I do not know what to do. I really should just walk away.

I follow Warren from his bedroom along the hallway, past the cream walls with paintings hanging. We walk into the dining room and face a large table.

“Would you like some breakfast before you leave?” Warren asks with sorrow in his voice.

I shake my head to say no.

“You need something, even if it’s just a drink, Jen.” He pushes.

“Coffee, please,” I state, placing my hand into my bag and pulling out my mobile.

“How do you take it?” He asks.

“Milk and one, please.”

I lean against the dining room table watching him move around in the small kitchen. I glance down at my mobile to see a missed text from Megan.

Hi Hun, did you have a good night? We will meet you at the venue just before 2. Heading out to get a couple of things. Xx

Megan, I did something really wrong last night. Xx

“Here you go. Shall we sit in the front room?” Warren asks while passing me a blue cup of steaming hot coffee.

“Okay.” I follow him into the room.

“So, you’re getting married. When?”  He asks, taking a seat on the dark blue corner sofa.

I sit down, ensuring a space between us. “In seventeen days.”

“So, are you going to tell me about the lucky man?”

“You don’t really want to know about him. You’re just trying to find out something. What do you want to know?”

“Are you really happy?” He asks, placing his hand on my bare knee.

“I’m not talking about it.”  I drink my coffee as quickly as I can. I need to get away from Warren. My chest hurts, and I feel like I am breaking into a million pieces. I want last night to last forever, but I am with Rich. He is my prince now.

“Where is it that I am taking you to?” Warren asks as he grabs my empty cup.

“Just back to the club, please.” I stand up and follow him into the kitchen. His apartment is perfect. The walls are painted cream with a feature wall covered in wallpaper and large windows to allow light to enter. It is a very stylish place, but it is lived in and easily recognised as a bachelor’s apartment. He has a large television with a game console and a rack full of video games. It is odd that I do not see any family pictures on the wall.

“Are you sure? Where is your car?”  He asks, grabbing his car keys from the side where he threw them when we came in last night.

“At work.”

“I will just take you there.”

“No, you don’t have to do that.”

“I’m taking you to your car,” he says in a stern voice.

“Thank you.” I look down at the floor, not knowing what else to say.

The journey to my car is quiet; we don’t say anything to each other. I feel like I have broken Warren. Why did I have to sleep with him?

“Thank you, Mr. James,” I say as we pull up beside my car.

“It’s Warren, and you’re welcome, Jen.” He leans over to me, placing a little kiss on my cheek. Tears begin to well up in my eyes, and I take a deep breath before I open the car door.

“Jen.” I turn to face him. “Here is my card. Please stay in touch.” I take the card and nod as I exit the car. I walk over to my car and rummage through my bag to find my keys, sliding his card into my bag in the process. I jump into my car. As I start the engine, the tears begin flowing freely down my face. Why? Why did I do it? I love Rich, or I don’t know anything about what I want anymore.
