Chapter 29

Dane

For a moment, Sydney looked scared. But that was probably because I had startled her in the dark. It was true what I said, I was waiting for her. Waiting to see if Leo accompanied her to her house. If that had happened, I vowed to give up all hope and leave Tramore immediately. Anyway, hadn’t I come here just to get a quick glimpse of her and go back? She had mesmerized me again. I couldn’t pull myself back.

“Why were you waiting for me?” she asked, finally finding her voice. In the moonlight, Sydney’s face was illuminated to a silvery hue. Her hair fell like a cascade of a shiny brunette curtain around her shoulders, the bun she had made earlier had come undone by now. She was looking up at me with those gorgeous brown eyes, and she was utterly irresistible to me.

“I wanted us to have a chat,” I said and stepped closer to her. We were alone for miles together. In the distance, only the restaurant’s lights illuminated the streets. Behind us, the high tide was crashing against the beach. Everyone in town was already home, there weren’t any tourists in this part of the promenade either.

“I told you we’ll talk tomorrow,” she said a little irritably.

“I know you said that, but I thought we should talk tonight,” I told her and Sydney took in a deep breath. Then, as we stared at each other, she crossed her arms over her breasts. Those very breasts that I’d been dreaming about all these months. I couldn’t help but look at them.

“Okay, what do you want to talk about?” she asked and our eyes met again. In all this time that I was sitting there and waiting for her, I hadn’t come up with a plan on what to say. I tried to think quickly.

“I just wanted to catch up. Check up on how you’re doing. How business is,” I said and Sydney’s eyebrows rose, like she didn’t believe what I was saying.

“You just wanted to catch up?” she asked and we looked at each other.

“Why are you really back here, Dane? I don’t believe that you liked Tramore that much to take your next vacation here,” she said and this time I heard the hiss in her voice. I could tell that she suspected something. She knew there was more to this than just a lousy vacation at the beach. I shrugged my shoulders. I wasn’t prepared to lay my cards on the table yet, not when I’d just seen her with Leo.

“Who said this was my first vacation in the past eighteen months? I wanted a quiet peaceful getaway, and I thought of Tramore again. What’s the harm in that?” I said, and took a few more steps towards her. Sydney was following me with her eyes.

“If you want a peaceful vacation, then you shouldn’t have come looking for me,” she said and the closer our bodies got, a different look overcame her eyes.

“Since when is looking up old friends a crime?” I said, and by now we were only inches away from each other.

“Old friends!” she said with a small laugh and rolled her eyes.

“Then what are we, Sydney?” I asked her in a gruff voice. I was already turned on, just looking at her had that effect on my body.

“More like acquaintances. A one night stand,” she said and I noticed that she was glaring at me.

“Except that it happened twice,” I said and Sydney gulped, then licked her lips. The sight of her small pink tongue sticking out to gently glaze her lips was too much for me. I was breathing heavily, I was almost touching her body. I’d fantasized about her for so long, that the reality was irresistible.

“I don’t know what you want from me, Dane, but I’m glad you’re not staying with me this time,” she said and our eyes were locked together. Neither of us was making a move. I could see it in her eyes, no matter what she was saying, the truth was that she wanted me too. I didn’t know if she was with Leo, or with anyone else…in that moment, there was nobody else but me. Our bodies were doing all the talking. I didn’t want to think about what was happening in our lives, outside of each other.

“Is it because you know as well as I do, that we won’t be able to keep our hands off each other?” I asked her, and instead of answering or protesting, she gulped. She was watching me closely, looking at my mouth first and then my eyes again. I could see that she was debating what to do. Her mind told her that I was bad news, but her body was urging her on.

I took that as a cue, and I reached out my hand and grabbed the back of her head gently. Just to pull her closer to me. Sydney didn’t resist, she kept her eyes focused on my face. When she got closer, she placed her hands on my chest. She was inviting me to kiss her, she wanted my mouth on hers and there was no way that I was going to deny her that.
