Chapter 58

Lydia

The presents Colby brought for the kids from Maui were a smash hit. Upon ripping open their hula outfits, the girls immediately insisted on dancing for Colby and me, accompanied by Theo’s haphazard strums on his gleaming new ukulele. After the show, Beatrice flopped down onto the floor, eager to color in her new Maui coloring book while the rest of us looked at Colby’s photos from his trip.

When bedtime for the girls rolled around, Colby read to Izzy and Bea from a book about the Hawaiian Islands while Theo and I cleaned the dishes from dinner and made lunches for tomorrow. Finally, Colby and I administered kisses and hugs and “I love you’s” to all three kids, turned out the overhead lights, flipped on night lights, and then tiptoed back into the family room, both of us physically vibrating with lust for each other.

And now...

Praise be to Jesus, I’m straddling Colby’s lap on the couch, kissing him furiously and grinding into the hard bulge behind his jeans.

“I’ve got a present for you, too,” Colby whispers, his hands cupping my ass.

“Well, pop that sucker out,” I say.

He laughs. “I’m not talking about my dick. I brought you an actual present.”

“I’d rather have your dick.”

He laughs again. “Patience. We’re gonna do that tomorrow, remember? At my condo when there are no kiddies right down the hall.”

I give him one final kiss and lean back slightly, giving him leeway to pull a little box out of a duffle bag next to the couch.

My eyes widen.

“It’s nothing fancy,” Colby says quickly when he sees my expression. “It’s just a little token to let you know I was thinking about you while I was away.”

He places the box in my hand, a shy smile on his face, and I open it to find a simple necklace inside—a black pearl pendant on a silver chain.

“It’s beautiful,” I say. I kiss him. “Thank you so much. I love it.”

“Pearls are a huge thing in Hawaii. Apparently, they’re rich in symbolism.” He takes the box from me and begins extricating the necklace from it. “In Chinese culture, pearls were believed to protect a person from fire. I figured being with a firefighter, you should have that kind of protection.”

“Good thinking.”

He snakes the chain around my neck, sliding his fingertips deliciously over the nape of my neck. “Western cultures associate pearls with chastity and modesty,” he says. “So I thought what better way to commemorate our time with Jane Austen than a pearl?” He grabs his phone and holds it up, set to the selfie function, so I can see myself wearing the necklace.

“I love it,” I say, touching the pendant with my fingertip. “I’ll wear it all the time. Thank you.”

Colby puts his phone down and kisses the curve of my neck, making me shudder. “And, last but not least,” he whispers, his warm breath tickling my skin. “Small pearls were sometimes used in Victorian times to symbolize tears.” He slides his hands underneath my shirt and around my back and runs his fingertips up my back toward my bra. “I know you’ve shed an ocean of them in your life,” he says softly. He unlatches my bra. “And I know you’re scared you’ll wind up shedding more with me because of what I do for a living. Who I am at my core. But I want this pearl right here to symbolize your willingness to take that chance with me. I want this pearl to symbolize we both know life is full of risk and loss and tears, but that we’ve both consciously decided our love is worth taking that risk.”

Rather than reply verbally, I nod and kiss Colby’s mouth. As he returns my kiss passionately, he pulls my unlatched bra off my breasts, letting them tumble free under my shirt. When he cups my bare breasts in his palms and pinches my nipples, I go freaking ballistic with desire. I know we’ve agreed to wait until tomorrow to do the final deed, but I can’t wait. His final physical therapy session is mere hours away now—and, really, it’s only symbolic at this point. For all intents and purposes, he’s not my patient anymore. Anyone at the licensing board would be able to see he’s fit and strong and of sound mind and body. Anyone would understand we’re in love.

I frantically unbutton Colby’s jeans as he pulls my skirt up. He grips my bare ass cheeks and slides his fingertips down my G-string and straight into my wetness, making me moan with white-hot excitement. It’s the first time in two months Colby’s touched the most intimate spot on my body, and, just this fast, my muscles are spasming. I cry out as his fingers slide inside me and begin strumming my G-spot. And then moan loudly when he lifts my shirt and buries his face in my breasts. His fingers inside me are doing magical things. Oh, fuck, this feels good. I pump his shaft as it peeks out of his unbuttoned jeans and he growls and takes my other nipple frantically into his hungry mouth.

My core shudders. And then squeezes forcefully. And then...

“Oh, Jesus,” I choke out. I grip his dick hard as an orgasm rips through me, sending my womb slamming up and down inside me and shockwaves of pleasure scorching through every nerve ending. I don’t mean to do it. Lord knows I don’t. But I lose control of myself completely and let out a howl of ecstasy.

“Mom?” Theo’s alarmed voice immediately calls out from his bedroom, even before my convulsions have stopped. “Mommy?”

In a flash, Colby throws my shuddering body off him onto the couch and leaps toward the hallway. “She’s fine, Theo!” he calls out, stuffing his dick back into his jeans. “Your mom just stubbed her toe.”

“I just stubbed my toe!” I choke out, writhing on the couch. “Ouch! My toe!” I begin frantically pulling myself together and scramble to standing.

“Don’t come out here, Theo!” Colby shouts from the entryway. “Everything’s fine!”

“Stay in your room!” I yell. “I just stubbed my toe!”

But, suddenly, there he is. Theo. Standing in the entryway to the living room, rubbing his groggy eyes. “Are you okay, Mom? Did you break it?”

Colby covertly shifts his hard dick in his jeans, looking like he’s in physical pain.

“Break what?” I ask.

“Your toe.”

“Oh. Yeah, I’m fine,” I say, my cheeks hot. “Just stubbed it.”

“But you screamed so loud.”

Colby chuckles behind Theo. “Yeah, you really did.”

“Yeah, I... um. I wacked it pretty hard. Go back to bed, buddy. I’m fine.”

“Will you come tuck me in again?” Theo says.

“Sure.”

Colby clears his throat. “Hey, I’m gonna head out, honey. Big day tomorrow.” He rustles Theo’s hair. “Have fun at my parents’ house tomorrow night, Theo-Leo. Thanks for being such a good sport about doing that for us.”

I kiss Colby’s cheek. “FaceTime me when you get home,” I say. “I’d like to continue our conversation to completion.” I look down at the bulge behind Colby’s jeans and wink.

“Will do,” Colby says. “I’ll call you the minute I get home. For sure.”

“You don’t have to leave,” Theo says. “I’ll just put myself back to bed. It’s okay.”

Colby smiles. “No, I should go. I’m wiped. It’s been a long travel day and I’ve got a special date planned for your mom and me tomorrow that requires us to be well rested.”

I smile wickedly. “Don’t forget to call me the minute you get home. I’ll be waiting.”

Colby kisses my cheek. “Babe. Believe me. You don’t have to ask me twice.”
