Ellie looked up and smiled at me, tilting her head.
“Gonna stare at me all day?” Her voice was teasing, and I grinned at her.
“The view would be well worth it.” I strode into the kitchen and poured a mug of coffee before I leaned across from her. “Getting some stuff in?”
“Yeah. I have been slacking with Bree here and all. I need to get back to my deadlines.” I knew that it wasn’t just for the money. Ellie was a hard worker and wanted to impress her clients and any potential ones that came from her successful score. I admired that since she could easily accept our offer to support her. Most women would take it without a second thought if it weren’t their intention to begin with.
“I should get some hours in today.” In addition to helping with the security company, I’d been doing some freelancing of my own. I enjoyed staying busy while having time to spend with Ellie and Miller, both inside and out. It worked for all of us. I took a seat at the table with my own computer, watching her as I let it warm up. The robe was thick and pulled over some tight leggings and I admired her toned calves. I sighed softly and glanced back down at my computer. I was thinking this over too fucking much. I had a gorgeous home in the mountains of Colorado, my best friend, and a smart and beautiful woman in my bed every night. It just wasn’t in that order. I needed to be content with that.
We worked until she got up to make some breakfast for us. Miller had made an appearance by then and they cooked eggs and bacon in the kitchen, sipping coffee and laughing by the stove. I finished the spreadsheet as instructed by Ellie, scanning over it before sending it to the client. By the time I was finished, they were bringing plates to the table and refilling coffee cups. I sat down at the head of the table as Miller flirted with her extravagantly, making Ellie laugh.
I could tell that he was unaware of what she said last night. That would be a huge deal for him, so much so that I suspected my best friend might be awkward. We ate and talked about the upcoming weekend. It was supposed to be clear, and we planned a hike on a popular trail a few miles away. Ellie seemed excited as she talked about it and I smiled as she chatted about bringing a lunch along for a picnic.
I took a break from work and stepped outside for some fresh air on the balcony. The trees were bright green under the light covering of snow and I stared over the miles of scenery. Staying here was like being alone in the middle of nowhere and I considered never leaving and going back to reality.
“Are you okay, Chris?” I heard Ellie behind me, making me jump. I was so lost in my thoughts that I hadn’t heard the door open.
“Yeah. Just taking a break,” I replied, not looking at her as I kept looking forward.
“You seem upset about something.” She stepped up beside me and I smelled the lemon sugar lotion that she used over the crisp air that blew softly around us.
I considered my answer for a moment. Did she know what she said to us last night? She was nearly asleep. Ellie sounded like she meant it in her sexy, soft whisper. I looked over at her, seeing the sun shimmering in her hair as she gazed at me with worry on her face. Ellie snuggled closer to me, sliding her arm through as she pressed a kiss to my cheek.

Ellie laughed and slipped her hand down to mine to pull me inside. She walked right back to the bedroom and walked through the open door as I listened through the house.
“Where’s Miller?” I asked as she looked at me with a wicked smile.
“He went for a run.” I grinned as she walked into the bathroom and stripped off her robe. Ellie giggled and shimmied out of her leggings, revealing her naked body as I licked my lips. “I heard you say it going to sleep last night,” I told her as she pressed her head against my chest.
“I did?” Her voice was a whisper as she tensed in my embrace.
“Yes,” I replied as she looked away for a moment.
“How does that even work? I’m with you and Miller. Your best friend.” There was pain in her voice and I watched her face dropped down. “I didn’t want this to happen.”
“Do you love Miller as well?” I asked with no judgment in my tone. I was certain that I already knew the answer.
“Yes. It’s like you are both one person sometimes and I love everything about each of you.” She swallowed as she looked up at me. “I feel like I should have to choose. Why can’t I do that, Chris?”
“You don’t have to choose. It’s weird but we feel the same way. He just didn’t happen to hear you say it like I did.” Her eyes softened. “You had to know that we’d get closer when we decided to move you in here. It just felt so natural from the start and I can’t fight where it’s going.”
“I’ve felt guilt for that. Shame. Not all the time but it hits me sometimes that I am keeping one of you from another traditional relationship. I think that I’m keeping you from being happy.”
I leaned down to kiss her, tasting a hint of myself on her lips. I thought that she was soaked by the water.
“We are happy. We’re both willing to stay here forever with you and turn away the world.” Her lips formed a smile as she leaned up for another kiss.
“So, you’re just going to ignore family and friends? Never show your face at the company?” I shrugged. It sounded like a great idea most of the time. “The holidays are coming, Chris. They’ve already called a few times since you’ve been here, haven’t they?”
“Yes, but we told them that we needed this time,” I reminded her as she raised an eyebrow.
“Time to a loving family is a month or so. Not this long. You have also avoided visiting them,” Ellie told me as I sighed. “Go, both of you. I can hang out with Bree since I know my parents are through with me.”
“Miller’s family used to take in strays all the time. I’ll bet that we can just bring you along and not have to explain things.” I mused as she frowned. “I can’t say that they won’t ask any questions because we’re single and you’re gorgeous. We can just be vague. Just friends. That kind of thing.”
“I guess that might work. They live close? We don’t have to travel far and stay at the house or anything?” I heard the longing in her voice, knowing that I hated the idea of sleeping apart.
“We stay at our parent’s houses. It will be just for a night or two for each one.” Ellie frowned. “I guess that you’d be in a guest room at Miller’s. The house is huge.” That was a prospect that left me empty. “They’ll want to know if we’re coming back to stay.”
“You each have a place?” Ellie checked as I nodded and met her eyes.
“Same complex but separate units.” I cupped her face and kissed her hard.
